Hello all. First time painting Brits is coming up. I was wondering if I should use grey or black primer? I have experience with reds on black primer that looks pretty good, and I have never used grey primer. I am leaning twords grey, as the 44th regiment had yellow collars and such, which are very hard to do from black. The figures are in 28mm Any hints/tips? |

Stay w/ black but first coat red/yellow areas with white as an undercoat. |

I have used white primer for over 30 years. Tried black, didn't like it, the figures just looked too dark overall, Never tried grey. |

I always use grey primer cause is neutral and fits well with light and dark colors, and my painting technique; so it depends also on your painting method. The main war game technique is based on black primer, it is fast and effective; a more sophisticated but longer process will have the grey or terra ones. I would use a red brown over the primer as red color base and after lights with vermillion, or scarlet. link |

Here is a group of Perry plastics I did with white primer and a brown ink wash.

These (Foundry) were done using black primer
I find the white quicker and like the look a little better. |

I paint my perry brits like so: 1-Basecoat in antique white (almost cream not "brilliant white" 2- Paint everything except white parts. 3- Ink wash badab black. If you are carefull in your inking stage they can look very nicely shaded- too much and it looks like they are mud incrusted in some areas. So for me it's basecoat antique white from plastikote. Cheers- NB |

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did white with a black wash prior to painting. They are looking pretty good so far. Do you guys wash the white belts and such? I was thinking going over them with a sepia, but watering down the wash a bit so they do not look to dirty. |

I very carefully line the outside edge (where the belt and the uniform meet with black wash) I leave the white alone- but if your white isn't a cream white a Sepia wash might be needed to take the edge off. Water it down and then layer it if you have to. Let us know how you get on . . . All the best NB |

I washed the entire thing with black and it looks very good. The red is still red but the musty campaign and mud look is there. Thank you all for the help? |
