I believe that 15th Panzer's turrets carried a single number rather than three. Is there a solid rule as to what that single number represented? Thanks. Richard

I don't know about 15th Panzer, but in 10th Panzer the single digit was the company number. Rosado's and Bishop's "Wehrmacht Panzer Divisions" never comes out and says that the single digit was the company number, but all their pictures showing a single digit are labeled as belonging to the company with the same number as shown on the turret. That is, a picture of a PZ IV with a "4" on the turret is identified as belonging to the 4th company, etc.

So my guess is that it's the company number.

Mark, since posting this question I kept looking for the answer in books and on line. All of the pictures I find that claim to be of the 15th Panzer Division in North Africa show a single digit turret number. Most captions do not indicate what that number represents. In one instance, the caption identified the number as representing the tanks location in the platoon, but most things I find seem to follow what you indicated in saying the number represents the company. In Jorge Rosado & Chris Bishop's book Wehrmacht Panzer Division 1939-45, of the the tank turrets they show (12 tank drawings) for the 15th have a single digit number and they consistently refer to that number as the company number for that tank. If anyone finds more information on this, I'd appreciate the help. Richard

You've got it right, it's the company number. Check out the pic here:

Haven't the time to find it, but the Flames of War website has an excellent article on DAK turret numbering on their site somewhere.

they must have mispalced the decal fix and couldn't get the numbers to settle over the pistol port and the turret side hatch,,I know how they feel

Cardinal, my interest in the 15th over the 21st has much to do with the very subject you address. Richard
