I was given a some Lt.Col Hal Moore's Fire Base set from the Vietnam range. I am having a hard time trying to figure out the mortar. I know the barrel and base plate and the tri-pod but there is one extra piece that almost looks like another barrel but without the base plate anyone know what it is for??

Ammo tube I think – you find that piece in a lot of BF mortar sets from 60mm through 120mm and its normally described as the ammo carry tube.

Yep, ammo tube. Paint it green and put it on the base after you've based everything else.

I thought they were black cardboard tubes. Did they change to green during Vietnam?

I thought that they were black cardboard tubes as well.

Well, the ones I have seen have all been green, but I'm a bit removed from vietnam.

I'll ask this here instead of opening a new thread.

How do I get started in FOW Vietnam? I have the Col. Moore Fire Base, and a bunch of Peter Pig minis. Are the BF Vietnam range and the Peter Pig range compatible in terms of heft, size, etc.?

Also, where are the FOW rules for Vietnam? I know that some (?) appeared in an issue of Wargames Illustrated, some are available for download (B3 Front) on the BF website, and some are for sale (Tropic Lightning). Where can the bulk of the rules (TOE, etc.) be found?

Core Rules are the standard rules from the books, but if you're just starting out I'd buy an Open Fire set. You don't need the tanks, but the mini rulebook is much more portable. Or get the mini-rulebook from some other source. It wouldn't hurt to get Das Book, either, but that's not necessary.

Tropic Lightning has US and PAVN TO&Es, plus the additional rules for helicopters. There's an unofficial download that has a lot more (like Aussie and Republic of Korea), but it's for v1 Flames. There are some significant differences between armor values especially between Tropic Lightning and the download.

Howdy Dave.

They are close enough for me. I kind of prefer the PP foot stuff myself but I LOVE the BF vehicles & Helos. No issues mixing/matching.

Also, where are the FOW rules for Vietnam?

They are actually selling "Tropic Lightening" now for a minal cost. But as LitS say's, that really just a supplement, the FoE core rules are the base.

Word is that there may be an expansion later this year with a more full size book release.

Thanks, all. I should have been more specific and said I am new to Vietnam FOW, but have been playin WW2 FOW for years, so I have the books (most of them).

Thanks again!
