Interested in places other than Germany, as I am building the resources to do a US and Soviet intervention in Iran (ala Threads or Sword Point) in micro armor scale, but is anybody else interested in this? Wondering if anyone else had similar ideas? - Korea and East Asia? - The Mid East? - The Balkans? - Somewhere I haven't mentioned? |

There's a great little scenario set in South Africa in David Hackett's "The Third World War' where the frontline states invade South Africa with Soviet and Cuban assistance. It is likely a better 20-28mm scenario though. However, there was some pretty significant armor usage in Angola

What were the chances of Poland going hot during the early 80's? |

Rumours at the time said that the Polish military took over to forestall a Soviet invasion. However, I do recall that apparently the Soviets called up reserves to prepare for the possibility of an intervention in Poland, but the call-up was a disaster. |

Lots of good options above. Somewhere near/adjacent to the Suez Canal to try to restrict movement through it. Cuba and Russia try to tie up the Panama Canal too, using Nicaragua and the Sandinistas as a proxy army there. I recall big concerns about the communists there at the time. |

The old GDW series, The Third World War was premised on the clash between NATO and the Soviets arising from intervention in a civil war in Iran. |

So far our WW3 mini campaign has featured the Soviet invasion of Norway, Bulgarians attacking Greece and a Sov amphibious invasion of Japan in enormous transport hovercraft. Along with the usual Central Front stuff. |

USSR versus PRC. I believe this was the sparking point of WW-III in Twilight-2000. |

the GDW series was great , led to some figure gaming ideas . Most notably the Soviets attempt to seize the Bosphorous straits . Soviets vs Turks , with some US Marines attempting the save the day . |

Afghanistan, since that one really happened. Use that as a base to expand into other countries too, in a drive for a warm-water port. Japan. |

I did a number of games sometime back based on the Iranian students storming the Soviet, rather than US embassy in 1979. For the purpose of the games, the Soviets invaded Iran in retaliation, the US countered, and Iranian forces could be pro US or independent, decided on a per game basis. made for some interesting battles. |

I'll bet if that had happened, the Soviets would have been a bit less restrained about responding to the situation. |

New Zealand? Just because few will ever see that coming, the communists want to corner the wool market, and worry the Aussies a bit. |

@fonthill Poland came closer than many think – When the Russians hinted to the Polish military that they had better deal with Solidarity or the Russians may have to do it themselves the Polish reply was basically "We're not the Czechs"
thankfully Moscow got the hint

Indonesia is an interesting area. The most populous Muslim country in the world, composed of 13000+ islands. Indonesia aiding their Muslim co-religionists in the southern Philippines would make for some good light naval skirmish gaming--It is a short trip across the Sulu and Celebes Seas. US aids its old friend against the Moros and Indonesians--supported by Iran or Syria or Libya maybe. Also some skirmish gaming on Mindanao and Mindoro in the PI. |

Was real interested in this topic during the Cold War but since it's over I can't get juiced up about it. The moment has passed, it didn't happen. Move on. Sometimes I miss the USSR. |
