My club played 4 games of "Mech Attack!" last night. For the first time I tried to create a senario other than kill-em-all or escalating arena fight (kill an opponent, get a bigger mech, x3 to win).

It was an attack on a supply depot with the Attackers needing to steal supplies and get back across the border and the defenders needing to drive off the attackers. Attackers started with superior numbers, but Defenders had the ability to roll for reinforcements, and attackers could not win just by killing the defenders if they did not meet the mission objectives. I've linked the senario as a PDF below, as it might be usefull in other games as well. I'm going to streamline it a bit as it took a bit longer than I had planned.

Rearguard wheeled tanks for the Supply Depot Defenders

Defending Mech's take up position in the city as attacker's approach.

Attacker's Advance

A few temporary immobilizations allows the Attackers to outflank the defending mech's and make their way closer to the Supply Depot.

Chaos Ensues.

Attacking mech reaches the depot, but will be destroyed momentarily, largely because of rear shots from the defender's wheeled tanks.

Despite a strong start, the Attackers were bogged down long enough for the defeders to call in reinforcements (see senario PDF for details on how it works) . In both senario games, the Attackers sceeded the field after taking two casualties and facing a much superior force.

All in all it was a good batch of games. I'm definitely going to streamline the senario as it took longer than expceted to finish it. We try to keep our Mech attack games to around an hour, and it probably would have taken around 2 hours to complete the senario.

It was a great reminder of how much I like the Mech Attack rules (http://www.armorgridgames.com/). I was able to complete two mech skirmishes on a real terrain table and do some FLGS shopping in less time than it would take to play one game of battletech on a hex map.

Also, all the figures are rebased N/1:44/10mm scale Mechwarrior Clix figures. The grey and white figs are the stock paintjobs and the green ones are repainted by one of our members.

Here's the PDF of the senario.

I'd love to hear feedback on it. It's the first Senario I've ever written -on my own- for a wargame.

Nice work there, bass! Good photos, mechs, scenery, and 2 hours is not a horribly long time to play out a game. Thanks for sharing!

Nice.

Do you prefer the scenario based games to kill them all?
Quick rules FTW.

Thanks folks.

I defninitely prefer senario games. With rules as streamlined as MechAttack!, I find that kill-em-all games lose their charm and strategic value fairly quickly. With a Senario, it's far more engaging as you are thinking about how to achieve an objective rather than the game-math-excercise of trying to guess how long you and your opponent can chip away at each other until one dies.

I agree.
I have found this as I have gotten older and had less time to play games.

You just need to work out some campaign rules now!

;)

Yeah scenarios are a better choice. They provide more flavor in a game. Did you use Gale force 9 hex bases? I did. I have remounted about a 100 clicky mechs on them. Hadn't thought about using all my vehicles and infantry since I was using them for my 15mm games. May have to rethink that.

Thanks,

John

Yep, I used GF9 Econo bases for the vehicles and Mechs. Mechs and small vehicles on Hexes and large vehicles on Rectangles. Also, I rebased a bunch of MW infantry (not pictured here) on EM4 plastic hex bases.

Looks like a fun game! I've been a Battletech fan since '85, so it's pretty much my go to rules for mecha. But I've been getting into 15mm sci-fi lately as well. How do the infantry rules hold up?

I have been impressed with the Battletech Quick Strike rules. Lots of toys on the table (A Company or so) and fast play. Lots of fans in the BT community for these.

Thanks,

John

SonofThor,
The rules are pretty straitforward with a couple different weapon (equivalent to a light mech weapon) and armor options. Just enough to cover most varieties of MW infantry.

Infantry are fairly weak, but they are functional and cheap points-wise. We've had a couple times where they took out a mech.

Nice reports!

I do have the Mech Attack rules, but haven't actually played them yet. I'm still trying to figure out what minis to use (I've cut out some of the paper ones, but have a hard time actually finishing a group). MW clix minis may just be the answer…
