Long Island Gamer | 22 Sep 2011 3:39 a.m. PST |
I'm sure there area allot of disgusted people right now. They've put Historicon out of reach of the people that have supported it all these years. They've decided they want HCon to be a southern convention. If you see a board member, tell them how disgusted you are. Most importantly, vote with your wallet. Just don't go. |
sharps54 | 22 Sep 2011 4:19 a.m. PST |
And I'm sure there are a lot of elated people as well as they have moved Historicon closer to them. This makes it harder for the NE and easier for the South. That said HMGS is NOT a NE organization it is a Mid-Atlantic organization and since Virginia is a Mid-Atlantic state they are still well within the area of their membership. If they were holding a Southern convention it would probably be closer to Atlanta

Long Island Gamer | 22 Sep 2011 4:21 a.m. PST |
No Jason, the Board spit in the face of the people who have supported this convention. I hope people like Bill Grey are proud of themselves
They should hang their heads in shame!! |
sharps54 | 22 Sep 2011 4:25 a.m. PST |
So all of us that drive up from VA and MD (not to mention those in NC and further south that come) haven't supported the convention? I understand this puts it out of driving range for some and that stinks but I doubt it was an intentional attack on Northeastern gamers. Jason Stafford, VA |
Long Island Gamer | 22 Sep 2011 4:28 a.m. PST |
I doubt it was an intentional attack on Northeastern gamers Sorry – this was a direct slap in the face. We need to get together as a group and decide that we're not attending Historicon. No sense in rewarding a bad decision. People, vote with your wallet. Don't go. |
Dynaman8789 | 22 Sep 2011 4:38 a.m. PST |
I'm voting with my wallet, I used to go for a day, now I'm going for 3. |
Long Island Gamer | 22 Sep 2011 4:40 a.m. PST |
I'm voting with my wallet, I used to go for a day, now I'm going for 3. Great. The Board decided that they wanted to cater to the Southern faction – so be it. Over the next few weeks, you'll see more Historicon facts for people coming from the North. Let's hope the convention falls flat on it's face. |
Joe Fish | 22 Sep 2011 4:46 a.m. PST |
It is a longer ride from Hartford, CT than either of the PA sites in recent memory. It is farther than the old (yeah I am that old) Baltimore site due to our road network. I can see how getting off the "Island of Long" is a bear in and of itself, much less the following drive to Virginia. That said, it may be the best site of a bad year's exercise in damage control. In the end, to go or not will be the decision of the individual gamer. I am going to attend as my gaming group, the Hofkreigsrat 'Rats" plans on running some Piquet FoB 1812 Napoleonic's games in 28mm. With the distances involved, it means one less day there due to traveling time. I could always leave Harrisburg, Lancaster or Valley Forge in the late morning and get back home by 5 to 6 pm. That won't be possible for a Virginia trip. But my friends from SC and GA are sure to find it easier. Maybe they could come earlier and stay longer. It always amuses me that Virginia is a 'mid Atlantic state' and/or a 'southern state' depending on what topic is in play. Here I thought the continental drift was West to East. |

Go ahead and stay home suckers, I'll make more money with less competition. We will. Hopefully, you'll have plenty of rooms. Lots of them. All empty. |

> you'll see more Historicon facts Facts, or hate filled missives? Really – if the location does not work for you then don't go, but throwing an online temper tantrum is childish. |
Long Island Gamer | 22 Sep 2011 4:55 a.m. PST |
Simply facts, But if you want to go and be a BoD lapdog, don't let me stop you. |
DinOfBattle2 | 22 Sep 2011 4:57 a.m. PST |
I'm thrilled with the new location, even if it is for just one year!!!! |
Femeng2 | 22 Sep 2011 5:08 a.m. PST |
What location? Just got an email from the BoD yesterday saying nothing has been decided yet. Are you so afraid of crossing the Mason-Dixon Line, or is it just you have to go through D.C.? |
Schogun | 22 Sep 2011 5:08 a.m. PST |
I haven't seen any announcement. Where is it? <Never mind. I found it in Message Search. Odd the post doesn't show up on my front page.> |
Colonel Bill | 22 Sep 2011 5:08 a.m. PST |
I live in across the river from Harrisburg, PA and I will be definitely going, making my hotel reservations today. Many thanks to LIG for reminding me Pennsylvania was part of the Confederacy and remains a Southern state to this day :). Regards, Bill Gray |

Long Island Gamer | 22 Sep 2011 5:10 a.m. PST |
Bill, I would expect that from you. This board did nothing but spit in the face of all those that supported Historicon all these years. You should hang you head in shame. |
rob12763 | 22 Sep 2011 5:11 a.m. PST |
Still about the same distance for me.Make it harder on the northern crowd you have complaints, make it harder on the southern crowd you them off.No wonder Giglio doesn't want to be director anymore.Pa or Va it is about the same distance from Northern Kentucky for me. |
rob12763 | 22 Sep 2011 5:12 a.m. PST |
And if it was in Jersey or New York how many more people would be disgusted. |
Jlundberg | 22 Sep 2011 5:16 a.m. PST |
A couple of hours further for me, but location will work since my in-laws are around an hour away and my wife can have a nice visit with them. Those that have to drive further and feel they can't make, I am sure you will be missed. Since I have met folks that travel from all parts of the country – Talked with friends that travel from Michigan, Colorado and Nebraska, I imagine that their reaction is muted. For me the drive goes from 4.5-5.5 hours to 8 hours. A signfican increase, but one I will still plan on doing. Had the con moved to the research triangle, I would seriously think about not attending |
74EFS Intel | 22 Sep 2011 5:26 a.m. PST |
I haven't been in years, but I think I'll make a special effort to go next year. |
vogless | 22 Sep 2011 5:27 a.m. PST |
Ahh, Historicon! what would it be without a year of angry boycott posts preceding it? |
sma1941 | 22 Sep 2011 5:46 a.m. PST |
That Long Island guy sure likes to whine. Historicon started in Virginia and it's just coming home again. Also, it seems to me the gamers in the South supported Historicon all these years as well, not just the NY crew. With the attitude the Long Islander has, I think the convention is better off without him. |
Long Island Gamer | 22 Sep 2011 5:51 a.m. PST |
Once again, sma1941 has shown the TRUE colors of HMGS. They think they're better off without the people in the North. |
epturner | 22 Sep 2011 5:54 a.m. PST |
I'm sorry, I'm just not inspired enough to get upset. When I was living in Massachusetts I drove to Historicon in PA. Now I live near King of Prussia. I'd rather drive to Fredericksburg than to Hampton for a lot of reasons. Distance is only one of them. I drive to re-enactments for the AWI. Some I make, some I don't. It's more about "return on investment" or "fun quotient" or something like that, I suppose. Same with Cons. If you're not going to have fun, stay home. I'm sorry, carry on with the whinge and whine session

sma1941 said: :Historicon started in Virginia and it's just coming home again." That's not true. It was inwented by some old babushka in Leningrad. It should be held in Russia. |

Yes, PLEASE stay home, Long Island Gamer, and H'Con will have that much less spite and hate. |

Mr Elmo | 22 Sep 2011 6:19 a.m. PST |
I'm very excited about the new location and it gives me a reason to go. In fact, the Elmo family is already making Summer 2012 plans for Historicon. Had it been in Valley Forge (again) we probably would have passed. |

LIG I'm a bit surprised at your temper tantrum. I had more to do with supporting (and establishing) HISTORICON than anyone else. And I've been coming up from Florida since 1995 (well, for some years I came up from the Eastern Shore of Maryland.) My misgivings about Fredericksburg stemmed entirely from my experience going south from the DC Beltway after PA conventions. That concern was not for my own convenience, but out of concern that it would discourage some of you up north. The best solution, if you are coming, is to hit I-95 or whatever in an off time. And a lot of thought should go into that. In spite of the DC Virginia suburbs, Fredericksburg is the best of the known options. The HOST doesn't want us and has lost parking. Besides it lacks the marble tiles and hot and cold running chambermaids so valued by James. VFCC is a casino, not a convention center. York doesn't have any nearby hotel rooms. Hampton has all of the drawbacks of Fredericksburg exponentially. Do I have to tell you what is wrong with Baltimore? The first two HMGS (Inc/EAST) conventions were in Virginia just inside the Beltway. When we outgrew that facility we moved around the Beltway to Maryland for the next 6. When we moved to PA it was because we needed the space. It certainly was not done to insult and injure "those who had supported the convention." For all that some complained of having to move north of the Mason Dixon line. The people who made the decision to move to PA were not Pennsylvanians. None of us were. We picked the best site we could find for the convention. I think most of the current BOD are from New Jersey. They did not pick Fredericsburg to stick to the whiners from north of the Mason Dixon line. So you think the evil BORG picked Fredericksburg out of spite? I am tempted to say "Grow Up!" But since I and my children and grandchildren have sworn never to do that, I wouldn't wish it on anybody. Pat Condray |

flicking wargamer | 22 Sep 2011 6:41 a.m. PST |
Awesome! Not only is the venue great, but there are several battlefields right in the area, and Fredericksburg is a great place just to walk around. I am pretty sure that those who were concerned about getting murdered in Baltimore (I missed the newspaper articles about all the attendees of the Baltimore Comicon and the Grand Prix getting killed and robbed, but I am sure it happened) will be able to relax and walk around Fredericksburg. Once the temper tantrums die down and we finish hearing about what a disaster it will be and how the millions from New York can't get there, and how horrible the site is from those who have never been there or even driven south of PA, maybe even scaring off some people that would otherwise attend, we can get down to rolling dice and playing with our toys. I have yet to see a convention director named for it. Any news on that front? |
Disco Joe | 22 Sep 2011 6:46 a.m. PST |
"The HOST doesn't want us and has lost parking." Pat, please explain to me where it has lost parking. It seemed like the same amount it always had when I was there at Cold Wars this year. |

"
the Board spit in the face of the people who have supported this convention." I don't think the board has expectorated on anyone at all, but if you want to meet me somewhere I'LL spit in your face if it'll make you feel any better! 8)= |
Plynkes | 22 Sep 2011 6:57 a.m. PST |
They should split it into two conventions. One in Bangor, Maine and the other in Key West. Then surely both North and South would be happy. |
firstvarty1979 | 22 Sep 2011 7:07 a.m. PST |
I think Pat is counting some of the parking around the old adjacent hotel that was torn down. It at one point was known as the Congress Inn. That's the only impact that I can think of as the new shopping mall where Bed Bath & Beyond is located didn't impact the parking at all. I'm sure he can correct that, if I am in error. LIG in a prior thread said that he wasn't encouraging a boycott. He didn't like that word, but again, he seems to be endorsing one here. "A rose by any other name

M1Fanboy | 22 Sep 2011 7:09 a.m. PST |
LIG, Seriously, lighten up. Don't wanna go, don't go. Just don't be spiteful and ruin the fun of those that want to go. I think the deal we got out of Fredericksburg is boffo and honestly? Considering I am an epileptic and unable to drive period, getting to F'berg was a whole lot easier on the whole than going to freakin' Lancaster. |

I wasn't planning on going to H-con in 2012, but now I think that I will just to p-off Long Island Gamer. Historicon plus the opportunity to see the nearby ACW battlefields. Sounds like a good combo to me. BTW, I drive in from Chicago (12+ hours). It's no big deal. |
Chris B | 22 Sep 2011 7:14 a.m. PST |

I have family in Northern VA. Plynkes, big thumbs up on the Historicon in Bangor idea. BTW, Huzzah in Portland Maine will be May 4-6. |
John Michael Priest | 22 Sep 2011 7:22 a.m. PST |
I've been out of the loop for a while. Historicon is in Fredericksburg, right. I want to make sure I go to the right location. No matter where you hold it – Lancaster, Hampton, Fredericksburg, King of Prussia, it's overa 3 hour drive for me. I wouldn't miss it for anything. My grandson has started gaming with me at the conventions. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Virginia is fine with me. No need to fight a new Civil War over it. Maybe the complainers need to remember the nullification crisis when SC tried to leave the Union – too small to be a country, toobig to be an insane asylum. No one is being forced to attend. If you do not like the location – don't go. |
cfuzwuz | 22 Sep 2011 7:24 a.m. PST |
I would like to go to Historicon some year but the board. keeps spitting in the face of us Okies. What's wrong with Ok City? Central location, wide open spaces. Sure you have to put up with Okies but we're pretty friendly for the most part. As Okies we need a break. The Grapes of Wrath, the bombing, college football coaches that hate Okies unless they're All-Americans.etc. Come on Easterners, quit spitting in our Okie faces! |
