My review of the Legends of the Old West rules, which I really like. It should be mentioned that I have not played any other Old West rules so I can only compare the game mechanics, how the rules flow and the way they are written with a bunch of other miniature wargames I play.

But in my opinion these rules really convey a feeling of the old west and are easy to learn/fast to play great for campaign gaming rules. And that is what me and my friends wanted when we got into Old West gaming a while back.

My review picks out a few of the highlights with these rules describes the major points of the game.

Hi, since your exposure to other Old West rules has been so limited I'd humbly suggest you take a look at some others. There is Gutshot, Six Gun Sound and my personal favorite 'The Rules With No Name'. The latter is also available as a free set and can be found at the Yahoo group I moderate.

Here is a video of a game I ran at a local show Cincycon.

The thing I like best about TRWNN is the sequence of play. It's unlike anything else I have ever played. It;'s dynamic, fast and furious! The game plays like the movies you watch on TV. Clint Eastwood WILL act like he does in the movies.

Do yourself a favor and check them out. I think you'll be glad you did.

Thanks,

John

Thanks for the tip John, I will check out the TRWNN as I've heard good things about it.

But every time I try to do something related to a Yahoo group it goes to hell. I had a yahoo account ages ago for This Very Ground, but have since then had trouble logging in. Will try again now and get back here and say if it worked or not.

Ha! After some pain, I got it to work and joined, now I have to find another game I was tipped about roughly 5 months ago as well. Thanks! :-)

In LotOW, just pray there aren't five low fences between your shooter and his target. Such dice rolling will give you carpal tunnel.

I've played these rules a couple of times and have extensive experience with other Wild West rules sets. I really enjoyed the Legends game, it did give a very good feel for the period.

I also enjoyed how you built up your gang and had to make choices on what you want.

The problem I have with LotOW is that tumbleweeds often deflect bullets.

I imagine you can ignore that, if you so choose.

Does seem a little silly to me.

I think it's an okay game that definitely has an appeal. It's also one of the prettiest danged books on the market! Say what you will about GW, but they do have high production values.

Personally, it doesn't suit my taste, but that's to be expected, I suppose… wink

Agree with mmitchell.

Western gaming is a broad genre ranging from ultra realism to ultra spaghetti and beyond to undead/magic/fantasy elements.

Now I lean to the realism side but also love Great Rail Wars for example but just could not suspend disbelief enough to to accept this game's mechanics.
