I've acquired the ships in 1/2400 from Panzerschiffe. I'd like to make an attempt to paint them authentically. Any references or suggestions will be appreciated.

Spanish Civil War????

All pictures I've been able to see show no camo schemes, if this you would know. All vessels seen ("España" battleship, "Baleares" and "Canarias" cruisers, "Alcalá Galiano" destroyer) show a light grey scheme. At least one of them (the first one) had a thin waterline painted in black, with underwater surfaces in red.

On-board boats seem to have been painted in white, with underwater surfaces also red (at least, on the above mentioned "España" battleship).

A similar pattern was applied to the "Sanjurjo" submarine (an Italian made one, of the "Archimede" class). No particular camo schemes for torpedo boats either, as far as I've been capable to know.

As for Ensigns, the expectable red-yellow-red with an eagle for Nationalists, and the red-yellow-purple with coat of arms for the Republic.

Wish this helps.

"Spanish Civil War????"

Yes. They had ships too. Quite big ones in some cases.

I have the entire Spanish Navy in 1/6000th.

I was unaware that naval actions were involved.
Will have to check it out.

Battleships, cruisers, several DD attacks on the above and at least one amphibious operations at the Baleric Islands. Serious stuff.

There must be a bit more to it than light grey.

How about the decks?

What about surface recognition markings? Both sides had sister ships in play.

Same for aerial recognition markings. Even if they didn't feel the need in the first year, by later in the war dive bombers were a serious issue.

"What about surface recognition markings? Both sides had sister ships in play."

If you've only got one battleship then if you see another one of the same class you can be fairly sure it is the other side:)

I've just done mine grey, both obviously 1/6000th doesn't leave much scope for major detail.

It is one of those interesting inter-war periods where you can justifiably have some bigg(ish) ship gun-on-gun action without pesky torpedo bombers, subs etc spoiling the party. The invasion of the Balearics makes an interesting mini campaign too. You can also mix in the Admiral Scheer et al for abit of fun.
