I'm unsure of how I want to paint my VSF British Steam Walker. The model is a GW IG Sentinel with a Ral Partha British Artilleryman as the pilot. I was thinking all black with copper trim and bolts but I've done that before on a steam tank. What colors would you choose? What do you guys think?

I like either white like the navy, or mid-blue like arillery gun carriages and limbers. |

It appears to be an army walker so the 19th century artillery color. Early 19th was grey/blue but at some point switched to a dark green or kahki. |

Black? Blue-grey? Beige? Khaki? Dark Green? By gad, you men make it sound like you want to *hide* on the field of battle. Next you'll be suggesting *camouflage* like the bloody Frenchies use! It won't do! No sir, it won't do at all. Scarlet, brilliant scarlet, that's the only colour for us. Let 'em know we're coming, and we aren't afraid of 'em, not in the least. We're the bloody British Empire, damn me! Oh, I'll grant you that some armour panels should probably be white or blue-grey or black, for heat resistance, and to break up the monotony, as it were. I'll let the engineers sort that out for us, it's what they're good at. And I must insist on gleaming brass trim, bright enough to use as a shaving mirror. If there's one thing the Royal Navy has taught us, it's that our seamen and sojers are basically unruly children, and they need a useful activity when they're off duty or they'll surely set to scrapping with each other. They can't spend all their down-time writing letters to their Mums and sweethearts, and polishing all that brass will keep their arms strong and their minds blank. Good show! Here are some hand-tinted photos of this fellow's toy sojers that nicely illustrate the scheme I have in mind: link and
(Strange stuff, that; looks like something Mr. Wells or Monsieur Verne might have dreamt up. And "Dakka Dakka Forum" – that's like no Latin *I* ever learnt. Hmmm, might be German, or Russian, or God-help-me Scottish. Have to look into that.) Where was I? Ah, yes – Best of all, my brother-in-law is foreman of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway maintenance shops, and he can get us an *excellent* deal on the crimson lake enamel they use on their Jubilee-class locomotives: link and
Now, where's the brandy? Carruthers! I see you trying to hide that bottle; hand it over, I say! Holdin' forth like this is thirsty work, damn yer eyes! |

Despite JPattern2's rant, I would paint it the same color as your artillery (if it's an Army vehicle) or Navy White. |

Colonel O'Truth's fabulous walker (still under construction) is green with red trim, and looks magnificent: link

If you'll be going with scarlet (not a bad idea, that!), then surely you'll only be colouring the upper works in scarlet and the lower in a good dark blue. With scarlet stripe down the outer leg. Pilots should, of course, be in the uniform appropriate to their cavalry regiment. This is the cavalry, isn't it? |

Victorian steam tech can be any colour, so long as it is 'heavy' – dark greens, black, pillar-box red, navy blue. I would suggest two strongly contrasting colours (green/red, black/red etc) and pick out details in brass. That's really the key to a good VSF feel. You would do well to emulate old steam trains – the best 'real' basis for VSF innovation
And add extra rivets! From the look of your pic, the rivets on the model are not very pronounced and there are far too few. (Thanks to Arteis for picturing my walker!) |
