I've given myself a rare day off, and I've been wandering arround the net gathering what info I can on the Ming army of the 1590s. I came across these figures from Irregular;

picture

Can anyone identify the headgear? It looks for all the world like a peaked cap, which is very weird. Are they labelled improperly? A pic depicting "Sung Infantry" looks more like what I'd expect, they could of course be what sung infantry looked like too, I don't know that period.

They look a bit anachronistic. Wearing this…

hmm just cloth caps n' string/cord/ribbon, if it is indeed a peaked cap it is wrong ^^

Doesn't look right (top pic) but I can't say I'm an authority either.

Didn't know the Bolsheviks were that hard up for weapons in the RCW.

The headgear in the top group is completely unknown to yours truly. Contemporary artwork depicts the Ming infantry wearing either helmets of composite structure or tasseled hats similar in design to the Sung Dynasty hats in the second group. Here's some examples of Ming Dynasty artwork and reconstructions showing the various headgear and equipment of the infantry:

well after looking into this with mainly Chinese sources the nearest thing that these may represent are what i said earlier, cloth caps with string/ribbons etc which have been worn by some in Chinese armies for millenia, maybe its just the way they look in the picture?, best bet would be to ask the manufacturer, one of my Uncles specialty is Ming era so i will look further into it ^^.

Hmmm… seems to my beady 'lil eyes that the caps depicted on the minis from Irregular have too much fabric involved….

Also, weren't such caps worn more typically by military and/or civil servants/bureaucrats rather than combat troops? For Ming troops all the contemporary artwork I've seen look more like the red tasseled cap on the figure in the back row on the extreme right?

Yeah those type were normally for Civil Servant types, but quite a few peeps would have worn cloth/other material caps/hats of some description (which they had done for thousands of years, just the fashion that changed) and if you have ever worn a helmet you know you have too have something under it…i still do not think it looks right but they could be used with that in mind ^^

Ban,

true enough, but I'm going to hold out until someone -anyone!! – gets it right with the Ming!

Dammit, I want a proper line of Ming to start building my Imjin War army with!evil grin

yes me too, i feel your pain Leland ^^..maybe one day eh, there is always hope…i have sent a email to them inquiring about those things on their heads…

Ban,

I keep deviling various manufacturers both plastics and metal to get serious and do the figures. IMHO if enough people see a proper 28mm Ming army in pitched battle with Hideyoshi's gang on the tabletop (and holding their own if not bombarding the hapless samurai into Alpo with their cannon!), the Ming will finally start getting the recognition they deserve as a worthy opponent for all those 28mm samurai armies gathering dust on people's shelves…evil grin
