I am looking for basing ideas for a bunch of plastic Napoleonic figures. Currently 1 per 20mm square GW base. Great for the skirmishers (Songs of Drums and Shakos) but looking very sparse for formed company troops. Intention is to try some rulesets below my favoured 15mm army level games of Volley and Bayonet. Maybe General de Brigade or Black Powder or for a bit of fun Chef de Bataillon? So before I start sticking things together and then regretting it, anyone have pictures or links to show some basing options used with 20mm figures? |

Carlo, what size are those bases? Wonderful work again. |

Not nearly as nice to look at as Carlo's (!), but I base using 4 foot on 30mm square, or 2 mounted on a 30mm x 40mm, or 1 crewed gun or limber on a 30mm x 60mm for artillery for Lasalle, CC:N or Black Powder. I typically use 4-6 bases per unit. In my opinion, the 15mm frontage per figure gives the right model density. link link Dave |

I follow one rule on basing – make the battlefield as big as possible. I've found that three 1/72 figures can be crammed onto a 1" wide base. This is a very good system. It allows 3-rank infantry units to fit on a 1" base. Then you can use that same 1" base and get two figures on it for 2-rank infantry units. That comes to a ground scale of approx 1"=25yards. Basing figures two deep on a base is now quite popular, and besides looking good, it technically allows you to double the ground scale to 1"=50 yards. Of course the depth scale becomes more distorted, but that's not a big problem. It's the frontage that's most important. |

Thanks for the links. Plenty of ideas to be working through. I like the closer look. I am currently thinking of 3 figure frontage on a 40mm base (2 of my existing 20mm stuck together with an extra figure added). Need to make sure I can do that with the HaT and Italieri figures which are among the larger 20mms. |

It should work. We are doing some kind of Warmaster Napoleonics and base infantry and cavalry on 30x60. Depending on the used poses eight or ten men two deep can easily set on a base. I´m using mostly Italeri. Have a look: link |
