I was thinking of making a 15mm themed game board and liked the idea of the Black Ops map Array for the basis.

But one big problem… how to make the central building. Does anyone make satellite dishes that can work for this.

More boards…. Lovely.

Beat you to it!

Looks like a colander to me.

Mooseworks808 Sep 2011 6:07 p.m. PST

Please post pics if you do this!

Like Great Northwoods Gamer said, get you self one of those vegetable steamer things.

Otherwise take a look at the plasticware at the grocery store. They have two part cocktail glasses that you might be able to use for 15mm.

ScoutII08 Sep 2011 6:29 p.m. PST

For me…I would probably look for cheap plastic bowls and then go to town on it with a knife. I have tried the steamer route before – and it ends up being top heavy. The shape itself is pretty basic, so there is a good chance that you should be able to find a bowl that is almost a perfect match for it.

That would be a cool board.

Dropzonetoe Fezian08 Sep 2011 6:35 p.m. PST

That could really work… need to get a concave one.

For the big dish I would use the inside of a lettuce spinner

For the smaller dishes I would probably use these

Also worth keeping your eyes open for wire bowls in junk shops etc. A bit like this one

need to get a concave one.

They actually fold up like an iris towards the middle.

Ambitious!

If I recall there is signifigant drop in elevation from one end to the other. At least in the one corner with the transformers.

Where you gonna find an oversized dragline in 15mm?

Looking forward to your updates.

Dude…what are you reading? (Upper right corner of photo)

I think you should go with a plastic colander so you can trim it to size and save some weight over the metal one. Otherwise, looks like a good idea.

Thats one of my favorite sniping maps.

Hybrid08 Sep 2011 9:31 p.m. PST

This idea reminded me of a project I had in mind a while back. This prompted me to take a look at our lettuce spinners again. They look something like this

The inner mesh basket can be removed for easy washing. The inside looks like this

The plastic would be very easy to cut to size, unfortunately I'm under orders to provide new spinner/s before turning our existing ones into scenery.

You could always buy a used Direct TV satellite dish off of the internet.

Yeah, I'm serious. Use the real thing! :D

@BuzzKill,

HAHA, I was waiting for someone to notice that. After inheriting my Mother-in-Laws house we got something like 4,000+ romance novels in the deal. After donating so many the local places asked us to stop and filling the book donation kiosks till full we still find ourselves with more. So I have been using them to undercoat my miniatures. So that is my excuse!!!

@Hybrid, When I took the above photo my wife followed me to recover it once I was done, least something happen to her grandmothers stuff. Women… Un-trusting sorts :)

@The G Dog, There is an elevation shift and I think 3 layers of blue foam(somehow I bought 1 extra sheet in a home repair job – strange) might work to handle it just fine.

I have also looked around at some of the HO scale options for the drag line
link
and I can find something that will not break the bank I think.

Its one of my fav maps too and seeing as Christmas decorations are already starting to make their way in a winter board is due I think!

Grand Duke Natokina09 Sep 2011 11:57 a.m. PST

Somebody did a Radio station in HO scale that had a big dish on top. Ck WAlther's on line catalog.
Also, Google up Goldstone Deep Space Tracking Center. Should have some good fotos.

Just testing out the footprint of the building.

picture

This is the bottom door, there will be a second floor the same height ringing above it roughly 8x8in square area.

I am going to have to pick up;
3 forklifts, 2 tracked snow vehicles, 3 jeeps, 1 chemical tanker, and a over sized drag line

9 satellite dishes of different sizes
14 propane tanks/fuel silos
30 jersey barriers
3 high tension power lines
6 connex/shipping crates
6 unique buildings to build… including the array
5 transformers
30ish trees
barrels/boxes/wooden skids/and covered piles of stuff on skids by the dozens
5 oversized AC/Heating units
walls, fencing, hazard plastic netting and rocks

This will fit nicely on a 4x4foot table.

The G Dog Fezian09 Sep 2011 12:22 p.m. PST

try tulle for your plastic netting.

This will be cool when done, I'm a big COD fan, I have often thought of painting up some 28mm moderns for COD, but don't want to start another era/scale.
