I would be interested in these for using an American "Fire brigade" type strike force of helos & jets vrs a PLA armored force in an invasion of a third country. Does that sound doable LordMKG?

von pumpernickel23 Sep 2011 12:04 a.m. PST

You need to have a bit of a combined arms force, although the predominant action is related to the air aspect. There are doctrines which govern your force selection which would easily cover what you are trying to do in order to differentiate the force structures. The battle groups can also be halved for smaller games and the mechanisms for doing this are very straightforward.

Hope this helps :)

Hind Commader is a very good ruleset with innovative mechanics. It focus more on the driving helis and the rest are managed as support forces (ground forces). What I like most is the treatment of the Electronics and lock-on/tracking capabilities. Cool mechanism!

What it confuses me more is the way you create the armies and how will impact in the game development. For example how many trucks or ground fources do you have to deploy and what is the main task for them in each mission. Still thinking how to….

Another odd situation is about the support units for the strike group vs the ground units. For sure when Marcin describe in his "How to create Strike or Half strike group" article it will be easier…

I am still painting units and managing to mount the helicopters on the rods and place the helix. It is really tricky to pin the Helis and place the helix related to base vehicles.

How do you store the Helis after mount them? They are really fragile.

3mm are incredible detailed minis… ;)

I am willing to start jumping into my first battle (of course alone) to see how everything combine.

The scenario creation is also interesting as it is not a battle to destroy the other. Objectives are hidden and combined with the level of loses you can suffer. So Attack yes but protect as well your units (Card driven).

Great job Marcin! Really looking for more expansions and don't forget a potential Solitaire mod in the future…

During next update the rules of MiG-25, MiG-31 and Tunguska AA system will be added to the ruleset. Also a tiny (fortunately) errata, which clarify one rule and corrects a few typos.
The estimated update release time is Monday.

I'm doing a 3-part series on Hind Commander over the next week; the first, a rulebook walkthrough, is here

link

I'll follow it up with a minis review, and then a AAR.

Failure1627 Jun 2012 7:40 a.m. PST

Looking forward to your reviews. This is the next game I want to get into (well, AWACS as well) but I cannot justify that foray until my lead mountain-range is reduced to but a couple of nearly insurmountable peaks.

But it is on the horizon, most certainly.

I did them very quickly (undercoat-main-wash-drybrush-highlight) but I should be able to do a AAR tomorrow…

I can sympathize with your views on these scales. I would say that 1/600 AFVs in particular need to be based for the reasons that you have mentioned--they can quite literally get lost in the shuffle.

I would suggest going to 1/300 scale for HC with the caveat that anything that is not a tank is ridiculously expensive. Aircraft are almost always overpriced and helicopters often even worse. Of course, in most 1/300 games, a couple is fine, but in HC you need scads of them.

So, perhaps procuring some new bases might be in order? I myself use the same type you do (for the most part), but something a little more flat for the base might be less noticeable, especially on the smaller helos.

Oh, those Brigade Models buildings are great, aren't they? I have a bunch, and I can't wait for more!

evilleMonkeigh27 Jun 2012 5:17 p.m. PST

I've never based anything as small as the vehicles – I'm thinking a 5c piece with 2 per base (like FoW style diaramas)

I did consider wire bases for helis but I find the detachable magnet approach too convenient – I only have 2 dozen bases – I simply attach the appropriate helo/airplane as needed – that way my storage of all my 1:600 fleet fits in a small sewing box….

Am ordering more Brigade buildings as they will be handy for my 1:300 Heavy gear project….

I see what you mean about aircraft cost – Skytrex Hueys are $3.50 USD each – whereas $4 USD gets you 8 in 1:600 OO.

Failure1627 Jun 2012 6:43 p.m. PST

There are many ways to go about bases 1/600 minis, airborne and ground-bound alike. It is hard to beat coinage for availability and overall cheapness-per-base, but don't overpower the tiny minis. Look into companies like Litko that can provide very thin basing materials (as thin as 0.8mm or maybe even less) for 10-15 cents each. On the other hand, your helos/aircraft will be based, so maybe this isn't an issue for you…?

My current plan for the AFVs is using flex-steel or mag-steel bases (which can be found at Picoarmor, Litko, or scads of other places to include non-gaming sites/shops) with small magnets glued into recesses drilled into the minis. This is workable, but the metal O8 uses is *very* hard, so it's not as easy as it sounds. The benefit is that it eases storage and allows me flexibility in what bases to use if it ever comes to that (for instance, I can use my 6mm GZG walkers as 2-3mm 'Mechs this way or switch bases sizes for different games).

I have several bases like yours set up for SF VTOLs and gravtanks in 1/300. Though I do not have any 1/600 helos yet, I have had good success using various lengths of flat beading "head pins" and REMs for even light 1/300 aircraft.

If you think the Skytrex Hueys are expensive, head on over to GHQ and check out the cost of their various aircraft…

What we really need is a 1/600th scale Rambo figure…….

Field Marshal03 Apr 2014 5:50 p.m. PST

Can i use A10s in these rules? Always wanted to command a flight of them in a game!

Beneath A Lead Mountain04 Apr 2014 5:11 a.m. PST

Field Marshal: Yes you can as support to your whirlybirds, just need to choose a doctrine that allows enough planes of that tech level.

Marcin from Assault Publishing04 Apr 2014 7:40 a.m. PST

Yes, you can use A-10s.
The whirlybirds are the stars of the show, but combination of good recon helis (or bad recon helis with good crews) marking the targets and strike craft can be very effective.
