Just finished my Der Kampfflieger (via Shapeways) 1/144th Caproni and am pleased with the way it has come out…

Very nice indeed; I have one languishing in the "find some free time Dom" pile, so the inspiration's good, thanks…. :-)

I love the "Water trough with wings" biplanes.
Lighter than the metal SPAD? Interesting.

Are these available?

"Are these available?"

Yep, try here:

They are 3d printed in the Netherlands. I've been very happy with the models I ordered-Caproni, Brisfit, Junker and HP 0/400. There have been some complaints about the texture on the wings on some of the models-Tripe and Fokker D 7 if I recall correctly-check the WOW forums.

There have also been a few threads about the Shapeways aircraft here.

"Lighter than the metal SPAD? Interesting."

Also yep. John the white strong flexible material is sintered nylon (I expect that means more to you than it does to me), and is very light weight for its size-on the other hand, it soaks up paint like a sponge. One of the major problems with the Skytrex Gothas in particular and any of the metal aircraft in general has been the weight. All of the Kampfleiger aircraft in wsf are very light. I have a Handley Page 0/400 (upper wingspan about 10 inches) and it does not weigh much, if any, more than one of the metal scouts.

" it soaks up paint like a sponge" – though a good undercoat primer stops this (I use GW Skull White).

I seal them by brushing on a coat of PVA glue, or spraying with Halfords Filler Primer – these approaches both help smooth out the rough texture; either of them followed by a few coats of Johnsons Klear / Future Floor Polish really reduces the roughness substantially.

Very nice. thumbs up

If you request polishing from shapeways, the strong and white material comes back almost looking like plastic from a model kit. The parts i received after polishing were very easy to paint. The texture is still there, but it's much more subdued. Almost like it has been hit with two coats of primer and sanded.

They won't polish these unfortunately – tried and got breakages I believe.

Very nice! I hope they make a Friedrichshafen or Gotha. I'd love to get one lighter than a metal kit

Very nice looking mini.

Nice work Steve, will have to get some Reverisco pilots painted.

Where did you find the cammo scheme for the upper wing?

mjc

Steve Blease30 Aug 2011 3:58 p.m. PST

@quidveritas – in the Windsock Caproni guide. It only shows part of the wing so I had to use that and pictures of a radio control Caproni Ca 4 that had a similar scheme to finish the rest of the wing…

Looks really nice, guy. Good Job….

By the way, your "here it is with the SPAD" photo is gone. I'd love to see that.

I just got a batch of Shapeways stuff and am VERY pleased with the results. Much better than I would have thought possible from "one piece' items.
