If you lived through the storm, did you:
A) Game
B)Paint
C) Want to game.
D) Watch a wargame related video.
E) Did something else entirely.

Since I am on the opposite coast, I survived quite nicely. Typing here on Tuh Mip.
I did survive Typhoon Joan when it hit Nam back in 71.

bandit86 Supporting Member of TMP28 Aug 2011 8:22 a.m. PST

Going through it right now!

raylev328 Aug 2011 8:30 a.m. PST

With the way the press covered Hurricane Irene, you'd have thought it was the end of the world. A lot of coverage of potential worse case scenarios to get headlines and attention.

Pictors Studio28 Aug 2011 8:32 a.m. PST

I survived fine. I went to the gym, watched a store for someone, went to a friends house for dinner.

I didn't get killed anywhere near as much as the media seemed to think I would.

Dynaman878928 Aug 2011 8:33 a.m. PST

Tail end of it is going by now, even the Ocean City, NJ beach nearby seems to have been spared for the most part.

Only real scare we had was a tornado warning which specifcally mentioned a road we live less then a mile from – but nothing happened.

We were on vacation in Florida last week, so we got to race home on Friday to beat the storm, loads of fun getting through DC at rush hour.

EDIT – for those complaining that too much was made of the storm and there was scare mongering going on, just remember Katrina- which was not taken seriously enough. Far better to be prepared and not need it, rather then not be prepared and need it…

E)Worked :(

I also discovered a leak from my new roof into the kitchen. Apparently that problem was initiated by the earthquake with unseen damage to the roof and that enlightened us to the problem through the leakage with all the rain from Irene.

5thlancer28 Aug 2011 8:34 a.m. PST

Just got back inside from checking gutters and bailing out a window well that leaks into the basement when the gutter overhead overflows from heavy rain. With a little luck I'll get to paint and complete the two Prussian Landwehr lancer units that I am working on. If the power doesn't go out again.

Man of Few Words28 Aug 2011 8:39 a.m. PST

Over reation due to "Katrina-itis". Could be toned back to reserve response excitement for the Big One. Me or family lived through all hurricanes in NJ and one in Fla for past 75 years: I've seen worse.
B) Painted.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian28 Aug 2011 8:56 a.m. PST

I cleaned up some figures last night, and will work on them some more. I have some painting to do for a fellow TMPer.

We assumed the worst, hoped for the best. We live in a tall, hundred year old house with big trees all around – had the tree surgery guys around last week to cut some limbs off and also cleaned out the gutters.

Pretty much got the best – flooding in our basement which always floods in heavy rain – but have so far kept power, water etc. Sump pump working away.

Not complaining at all.

Katrina Cat 5, warm water. Irene Cat 1 or 2, colder water.
Two very different animals. Not that I would expect the media to mention such. I do believe the media, as a group, are some of the most stupid people on earth.

As an aside, to many media crys of "wolf" are going to get people killed eventually.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP28 Aug 2011 9:10 a.m. PST

Killed eventually…well, we're up to 9 dead so far
here in NC.

The usual – drownings because surfers think those big
waves are 'cool,' trees falling over and crushing folks
(afoot, in cars, in houses), electrocutions (those
downed power lines hot ? Dunno, grab 'em and see),
accidents due to slippery roads…

Went to a friend's house and helped playtest his game for
Southern Front, so A…

Ron W DuBray28 Aug 2011 9:13 a.m. PST

Its going on, right out side my house as I type. 12:05 8/28/2011, Pawtucket RI.
downed trees, friends without power, truck garden trashed, broken window. etc etc…

we had a T storm 3 weeks ago that did more damage.

Caesar28 Aug 2011 9:14 a.m. PST

I prefer to be prepared for something bad that doesn't happen than to be unprepared and end up with Katrina.

bandit86 Supporting Member of TMP28 Aug 2011 9:19 a.m. PST

Outside Boston we are getting hit at least where I am

Historicalgamer28 Aug 2011 9:19 a.m. PST

I wasn't killed either. Watched movies and did other stuff that is not G-rated.

highlandcatfrog28 Aug 2011 9:27 a.m. PST

@ bandit86: Make sure Fenway Park is safe!!!

vtsaogames28 Aug 2011 9:29 a.m. PST

In southeast Manhattan, all five of the grand old (60 years +) trees around my building are down, blocking the streets. The bus shelter got whacked. Another tree fell in the park after the storm center passed. No one was hit, but lots of folks are walking in the park because the rain stopped. Winds are going to be around for another few hours and the ground is saturated, so I'm staying put. I got a PDF copy of Mighty Armies Ancients, will read that.

It wasn't such a strong storm but in the wee hours, when the center was off the coast from Virginia Beach, strong bands were slamming NYC and Allentown PA at the same time. It was big sucker. And folks up here aren't used to it. Proof is all the folks walking in the park right now.

Attended "Cigarnival 2011" in Easton, PA. The drive home was a bit hairy. Stayed at my buddy's place instead of continuing toward home another 30 miles south straight into the storm. With the exception of no power and a little trickle of water in the unfinished part of the basement, all was well when I got home at 0700.

In Northern NJ, USA. Lost power from 1am til around 11am this morning. Periods of wind and rain. Trees are down in areas of town. Our basement flooded a few inches as it always does with heavy rain. We are away from or higher than the major rivers and tributaries. The major highway Rt 23 is flooded thoroughly a few miles down and several other roads are flooded or have caved in (2 specific routes out of town.) Between that and the highway we don't have many options to get to the more populated areas are and where there is shopping, restaurants, many businesses. Essex County however is surrounded by the Passaic River which hasn't crested yet and the surrounding area is already flooded as it does when storms are really bad in the Spring although this appears to be worse. We will know over the next few days. If you see Wayne, NJ and flooding on the news that is the Essex county area and where the major highway to my town leads. It is also the area where I work my day job. The building has some flooding but not bad. Hopefully the water stays away but we may be closed for a day or more this week.

Royal Air Force28 Aug 2011 10:15 a.m. PST

In Newport RI, no power, moderate winds, no rain. The family and I are playing various card and boardgames. Just won at Munchkin Cthulhu.

Dynaman878928 Aug 2011 10:21 a.m. PST

> Two very different animals. Not that I would expect the media to mention such.

I heard it mentioned every time I had the weather channel on, they consistantly said that every hurricane is different. There does not appear to be much damage along the NJ coast, but it could have been very diffferent if the expected amount of rain fell, it was more like half what was predicted.

14Bore28 Aug 2011 10:31 a.m. PST

from SE Pennsylvania, flood water is starting to gather in rivers and streams. we have had lots of rain this month this put it over the top.

myxemail28 Aug 2011 10:43 a.m. PST

So far.

No longer a hurricane here, but a mere tropical storm. Quite rare for Maine. Took the screens out of the breezeway and put in the winter glass to keep out the sideways rain. Keep making the rounds to make sure no water seeps into the basement. A little bit about an hour ago by the bulkhead door. Power has flickered once, hopefully it stays on. Maybe I will do some painting since I'll be hanging out in the basement…

NE Pennsylvania.
Lots of rain and wind. Flood warnings in the usual low lying areas.

Goldwyrm28 Aug 2011 11:16 a.m. PST

I prefer to be prepared for something bad that doesn't happen than to be unprepared and end up with Katrina.

Indeed. Without the evacuations on the coast, the death toll from freak storm accidents could have been higher. Sad to read about the young woman trapped in her car early this morning who drowned in a flash flood in southern NJ.

I came away lucky with just a large tree down in my backyard from one neighbor's yard that missed all the critical stuff, including another neighbor's home, and only took out my fence.

My daughter is in college in Lancaster and she said there were lots of trees down and heavy rain. Looks like that is heading East so I expect that will be with us later this afternoon. The wind is picking up.

willthepiper28 Aug 2011 11:54 a.m. PST

Here in Haiti, we watched her pretty carefully, but were relieved that she decided not to visit us.

justBill28 Aug 2011 12:07 p.m. PST

Lots of rain, wind not too bad. 5+ hrs in the basement with 2 shop vacs just to keep up with it here in Troy, NY and I live on high ground!
It's just starting to let up as of 3PM.

14Bore28 Aug 2011 12:22 p.m. PST

Just saw on news building my company is working at (but I have been to other job for a few weeks) has bottom floor flooded in Conshohocken, we were working on 2 and 3 floors.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER28 Aug 2011 1:05 p.m. PST

just remember Katrina- which was not taken seriously enough. Far better to be prepared and not need it, rather then not be prepared and need it…

IIRC Katrina was a 3 when she made landfall, and had passed on. The damage happened when the levee broke, and low lying
areas were flooded.
Yes N.O. wasn't well prepared, but that was the storm's aftermath they weren't prepared for. If the levee hadn't broken, we wouldn't be having this discussion. As for hysteria, don't get started on the panic over Rita…

P.S. I slept through it!

jdpintex28 Aug 2011 3:39 p.m. PST

Can ya'll send some of that rain our way. We're still about 19" behind.

John the OFM28 Aug 2011 4:43 p.m. PST

As *I* remember Katrina, for a week prior to landfall, all the media were trumpetting a Category 5 Worst Case scenario.
And then people refused to evacuate and paid for it.
So, it hit as a Cat 3, and missed. Worst Case happened anyway, but not exactly as preddicted.

I have a ghoulish interest in disasters as they are predicted, and followed this quite closely from a safe 1200 mile difference.

Allen5728 Aug 2011 6:50 p.m. PST

No, I did not.

E). I'm in Raleigh,NC. Went to work. It rained all day and was occasionally windy. No problems on the road except some water building up on the edges in some places. The coast took a good licking tho. I'm a bit worried about if the Lost Colony set made it ok. The set starts about 3 feet from the sound. Hope they made it through without damage. Sad for the people who died and their families.

skinkmasterreturns29 Aug 2011 3:35 a.m. PST

We had sunshine and not a single drop of rain here,so I fared rather well. I was concerned about my niece who lives in Brooklyn NY,though.I was relieved that it wasnt as bad as predicted.

religon29 Aug 2011 9:26 a.m. PST

I thought I had. Then the technology calls from eastern NC started pouring in. Severe flooding here on Monday.

Omemin29 Aug 2011 10:24 a.m. PST

No, I died. Funeral's tomorrow. I was going to be cremated, but was too waterlogged.

Actually, it came right over us here in Maine, but at much reduced power from what was advertised.

Hurricane Bob was worse. Worse yet, my name is Bob.

Could be worse, my cousin is named Katrina.

stenicplus30 Aug 2011 7:25 a.m. PST

My sister now lives in Conneticut; a branch fell on her house doing minor roof damage and a tree fell down along her road onto power cables taking down all the power for the area.

So sandwiches and candles but they are otherwise well which is good.

I suppose that's E) for her.

Given up for good30 Aug 2011 12:28 p.m. PST

Closest I got to a hurricane was when Mr Higgins came to Cleethorpes!

Just hope everyone is OK.

dandiggler31 Aug 2011 9:48 a.m. PST

E. Lots of Vodka involved.

South Jersey, just outside of Philly. Lost power between 9pm and 1am. Some branches down, but we got spared the worst of it. There was definitely some flooding in the lower lying areas in town, the drive in to work on Monday was a little tricky since the creek nearby had flooded and some of the bridges that span it were being inspected prior to reopening.

brass131 Aug 2011 4:41 p.m. PST

E) Watched some of the news footage and wished some of that rain would fall on New Orleans, where we're in the middle of a drought and it's hotter than feces.

When it seemed pretty much over for the mid-Atlantic coast, I called John the Greater to see if he had survived. Since he had, that makes two chances in less than a week to bag his car and miniatures (earthquake, then hurricane) that haven't worked out. Shazbat!
