Finally, the Pfalz D.IIIa with the broader tailplane is available. I found it at Shapeways from Kampfflieger models. I ordered the strong, white, flexible material. I spray primed in gray and painted with Vallejo acrylics. The propeller came attached to the tail. I snipped it off and inserted it into the nose after drilling a hole.

Which material did you choose?

White, strong & flexible. Held together well while I painted and seems like it will do well for gaming (even though there's a general disclaimer against this).

I've found WSF to be quite rugged. My Caproni has survived being dropped and squashed recenty with no ill effects whatsoever.

May I ask what Shapeways is and how you can order material for a model? I'm lost here.

looks nice.

I'm more interested in inter-war aircraft so I'll watch with interest.

Some real beauts there.

At the WOW forums there are cautions about problems with surface textures on the wings of some of the aircraft using WSF (IIRC the problems were mostly with Tripes)-the photos posted on the forums shows a surface texture a bit like a shingled roof.

I have purchased 4 different models (2 Capronis, a Junker, a Brisfit and an HP 0/400) all in WSF and none of the aircraft I got had that sort of texture problem. The models I got had a surface that was just the slightest bit gritty, but paint and a future wash makes it invisible to my eyes anyway.

The WSF material does seems to absorb paint though. It helps to seal it with future.

Pardon the ignorance, and I really should know this answer, but are the Wings of War planes 1/144th scale? If so, then these Kampfflieger Models are a welcome supplement to the planes that are available from the Wings of War folks.

Are there plans for more releases to the Kampfflieger line?

Kampfflieger is a Russian or Ukranian designer of papermodels.

Shapeways takes the papermodels and makes (resin?) models of them.
Since the papermodels preceed the resin models, a look through his papermodels could indicate what Shapeways models may be in the future.

Darryl:

BTW-hi, haven't seen you in years maybe since ATC moved from Dayton-anyway, yep give or take a bit WOW are 1/144 just like Skytrex, the old Mamoli and Reverisco.

Proniakin:

The Shapeways models are made through 3D printing and can be "printed" in different materials. IIRC, the WSM material is some sort of sintered nylon-I'm not sure if resin is one of the available printing materials-it might be although I think it's more for casting rather than printing. You can poke around the Shapeways site and learn more about the materials available. One of the shops has racecar models for Formula De, with the car available in various materials including stainless steel. Some of the items, jewelry for example, is also available in silver.

(even though there's a general disclaimer against this).

Unless you are looking at a different general disclaimer statement…the statement says they are not toys intended for children. Sort of a blanket CYA statement since Shapeways can't control the size of objects and the related choking hazards they will pose to children.

fenyan24 Aug 2011 10:05 p.m. PST

OK, I misintepreted that disclaimer. Like David Manley said, these models hold up well even if dropped and due to their light weight will do better than pewter when elevated on flight stands.

I appreciate that there are models not available anywhere else in 1/144 (Airco D.H.5, the Caprioni CA-3 and Pfalz D.IIIa with the larger tailplane for example). I like the Sopwith triplane because it's already assembled--all you need is to paint.

@Darryl: in the last picture in the first post, the aircraft on the left are Wings of War Pfalz D.IIIs.

Nice – I should pick up the Caproni for playing Riesenflugzeugabteilungen…

Buckeye AKA Darryl29 Aug 2011 11:58 a.m. PST

Thanks, all, for clarifying my lack of scale knowledge in this case, much appreciated!

Dennis – Indeed, I have not made it to an HMGS Great Lakes show since it moved. Looks like this year might be out as well. Gotta check my calendar!
