Some of my friends are starting in 28mm Victorian Science Fiction (GASLIGHT). They're doing British and Prussian, so I thought I could do French. But extensive searching of the web failed to find any range of figures that met my rather fussy tastes. They were all either too static in their poses, too many of the same poses in a pack, too poorly sculpted (some), or otherwise just didn't 'do it for me' for some inexplicable reason. Then yesterday I stumbled across Foundry's small range of 'French Foreign Legion' (or 'Filibusters Characters') hidden in amongst their Western figures. I had earlier discounted their Franco-Prussian, Crimean and Maximillian Adventure ranges as too many of the same poses. These latest figures, however, seem more actively posed (though only just, as there are still a few too many advancing figures – but they have enough other variations to make them work OK). And they're lovely characterful cartoon-like models – perfect for the VSF genre, albeit with a Mexican twist. picture picture picture And, what's more, as they are in Foundry's Western range, they will do for the Western games we're currently playing as well!! I'll just cull out the few really Mexican-looking figures when doing VSF, and keep them for the Western games. Now I'll just have to wait for a Foundry deal, as I'm told you should never buy their figures at full price! Roly |

Foundry puts out some nice figures. Another great one would be Askari miniatures. link |

They had a 30% off clearance sale recently ,just keep an eye out for it again.Nice but too pricey for the pack sizes and then you have to add their high postage charge on top. |

Their deals are very limited. I doubt if you will ever find these figs on sale. |

Have you seen the March or Die range from Artizan Design? link It's a new range, there are lots more to come. Hope they aren't in your 'didn't do it for me' category already. I think the same designer made the Foundry figures, not 100% sure, but it looks like it. |

Old Glory's FFL are quite passable. I migh mix in some of the Parroom for your VSF edition |

I'm using the Foundry FFL for my VSF also.I got a bunch of them from a guy on Bartertown for a good price.Be aware that they are armed with muzzle loaders. For me that works great as my VSF is 1840-60 but you might want to check your buds figures. If they have breechloaders or boltaction rifles you might be in for some rough games(: |

I was thinking of a French style VSF army as well. I can't help but be influenced by the Perry Zouaves. I've just been thinking about head swaps and weapons. |

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'm not that keen on the Extraterrestial Legion figures – the gas masks just don't do it for me. And our VSF (at this stage) is going to be firmly Earth-based. And the March or Die figures are too plain and 'same-y' for what I envisage (though I'll keep my eye on future developments if they are indeed planning to enlarge this range). I did think the Askari Miniatures might do it, but despite some really nice subjects for their figures, I'm not keen on their sculpting style. Same goes for Old Glory. I did say I was rather fussy! So far I haven't seen anything to match the look of those few Foundry packs to fit the rather larger-than-life, cartoony image with exaggerated national flavour and individual character that I'm after. Good point about the muskets, Fitter Pete
however, for me it is more about the modelling than the actual gaming, so it isn't a biggie. |

If it helps, this pack of Mexicans link was done by (I think) the same sculptor as the Filibusters (they certainly scale very well), so might prove a useful addition as non-uniformed troops or a local militia. |

I have the Foundry Mexicans and Legion – excellent figs and a joy to paint |

I went with Ironclad for my French line infantry. They come with bolt action rifles and have that 'I'm French and no body else'feel to them but the range is very small.Though I only wanted a small guard for French officials in the British sector. link How about mixing some of the Foundry ones you've already found (and are more happy with)with some of their FFL001 – French Foreign Legion pack which have bolt action rifles and with the right paint job could fit in with the others? link |

Yes, the Foundry Camerone range was by Mike Owen who now runs Artizan. They are good figures, I own some
