I love the Perry Zouaves, but I'd like to paint them for a diorama as the Papal Zouaves. Does anyone know if the Perrys come with a kepi alternative? The Papal Zouaves eschewed the turban (for obvious reasons). |

I had the same idea. The plastic zouaves don't have a kepi option. I tried shaving off the fezz and gluing on a leftover kepi from the ACW cavalry box. Turned out ok, but more work than I want to put in for these models (plus I tried several others that didn't turn out at all).
My next effort will be to use code ACW26 from Perry Miniatures, 'Black Union Heads wearing forage caps'. |

Perhaps you could use/covert some of the kepi/forage caps from the two plastic sets(cavalry and infantry) if you have them. If not, maybe you could beg, borrow or steal some spares from other people. If you wanted to do papal zouaves from the 3rd Carlist War you could use head set H3 from empress miniatures SCW line here

Agreed – given that there are two heads for each fig, I suspect there are lots of extra kepi heads out there – I have a few myself – want some? |

Thanks for the offer, but to be honest I'm not sure when I would get to that project and I wouldn't want to take your spare bit only to have them sit in my bits pile! I've seen the Zouave blog, Fantail, and its great- lots of ideas there. The Papal Zouaves fighting for Napoleon III against Prussia never sat well with me, but I guess in the end they were French (at least those who fought in that war were). Nice work Willthepiper! |

The Papal Zouaves who fought in France in 1870-71 were not fighting for Napoleon III. A republic was proclaimed in Paris on 4 September 1870, following the Emperor's surrender at Sedan two days earlier. The French veterans of the Papal Zouaves who came to France to fight against Prussia in late September 1870 had in a sense been given the chance to do so by the seizure of Rome on 20 September by troops of the Kingdom of Italy. This left them out of a job. Under the politically anodyne name of ‘Volunteers of the West' they fought in the armies of the new French republic with considerable distinction, notably at Loigny on 2 December 1870. |
