I play a whopping (1) one period, WWII Land, and primarily late war western front at that, but I am branching out a bit to other theatres of late. Partly it is because I am too busy with life to do much more gaming than I already do, but frankly, I am reticent to start a new period and have to research all the uniforms/tactics/armies etc. I sometimes think I might like ACW or FIW but the thought of researching the uni's sends me running away in horror! So, how many different periods do you play?

1) 1
2) 2-3
3) 4-6
4) 7-10
5) 11-15 (Stop it! Seriously?)
6) More than 16
7) I don't game or collect miniatures, I only read TMP for the meltdowns.

Goldwyrm13 Aug 2011 5:32 p.m. PST

I play more than 16, i.e.- we host lots of games locally I'll join in without collecting. I collect about 8 historical periods, double that easily for Fantasy and Sci-Fi.

4) AT LEAST 7

Too Many!

Sundance13 Aug 2011 6:02 p.m. PST

4 or 5 – I stopped counting when I got to 8, but there might be a couple more I forgot about.

WWII, Modern, Nam, Civil War. I might add in a few Nappies, but only for Sharp Practice use.

Jamesonsafari13 Aug 2011 6:16 p.m. PST

4 or 10. Depends on how you count.

Late Republican Romans and enemies in 15mm.
Early Imperial romans in 25mm
Late Imperial Romans and enemies in 15mm.
Early Medieval 25mm
Late Medieval 25mm
SYW 15mm
Colonial 25mm
Napoleonic25mm
Early War WW2 15mm
Late War WW2 15mm

Or you could just say ancients, horse and musket and WW2. But to me all of the above are different periods.

Jovian113 Aug 2011 6:29 p.m. PST

6, seriously, some in three scales!

my main love is Acw you do worse than get a few boxes of 1/72 figs as second period. WW1 bought 30 of each main country BR,FR,GER,RUS, AUS, TURK,can use late war BR as US troops not massive amount of figs.Nam again 40 per side plus
vehacales for us + some helios.I like metal/plastic figs 28mm thats it really. I like the idea of doing fantsy if I ever did would not buy many. HUMMM said that about ACW!!! have a good day

Broadsword13 Aug 2011 7:23 p.m. PST

5) 11-15 (Yes! Seriously!)

At least 5 I can readily think of, but I have more that've been sitting in the wings for years.

Pictors Studio13 Aug 2011 8:23 p.m. PST

I do:

WWII land North Afrika, East Front and NWE in 15mm
WWII land Pacific 28mm
WWI Early War 28mm
Anglo-Zulu War 28mm
Vietnam 15mm
Anglo Sikh War 28mm
Carlist War 28mm
Late Roman 10mm
Romano-British 28mm
Greco-Persian War 28mm
Wars of the Diadochi 28mm
28mm Byzantines
English Civil War 10mm
Scots of the ECW 28mm
Eastern Ren. 15mm
Old West 28mm
WSS 28mm
Napoleonic Naval 28mm boarding parties
1/2400th scale Napoleonic naval
1/900th scale Napoleonic naval
1/600 scale ACW iron clads

All of those are big battle things where I have about 100 figs a side or way more (for the successors it is about 1000 figures) except for the Pacific WWII, which is only skirmish. Old West and Napoleonic naval 28mm are gamed as skirmish too but I probably have 100 figs for them plus a ton of buildings and or terrain. I have the starts of a bunch of other stuff, 28mm Sudan being the most recent thing, but I wouldn't count that.

In addition to that I have the following GW armies:

Black Legion
World Eaters
Emperor's Children
Tau
Dark Eldar
Ogre Kingdoms
Chaos Daemons
Chaos Warriors
Empire
Brettonia

in 28mm, the following in 10mm

Empire
Orcs
Chaos
Kislev

these in 6mm

Eldar
Dark Angels
orks

and a chaos and ork fleet for BFG.

So I guess that is about 20 historical periods plus fantasy and sci-fi. I have some 15mm Starship Trooper stuff and a bunch of factions for Infinity as well.

ordinarybass13 Aug 2011 8:39 p.m. PST

2-3 or 4-6 It all depends how you slice it up.

1)Generic Fantasy

2)Science Fiction Could be one, or could be divided up into the following periods/Genres
-Post Apoc
-Generic Sci-Fi
-Warhammer 40k
-Battletech

I don't have the OP's problem of being daunted by having to research for correctness. One of the things I like most about gaming is making it all up!

21eRegt13 Aug 2011 9:21 p.m. PST

5. Some, like SYW and Napoleonics I have in multiple scales.

Oops, just recounted. Over 16 so have to make it a 6.

Hmm, trick question.

Does Ancient/Medieval count as 1 period, 2 periods, or many specifical ones?

Do multiple scales count once or separately?

But I'm over 16 even without factoring in those oeptions

nickinsomerset14 Aug 2011 1:35 a.m. PST

6, some in more than one scale,

-Zombiewars 28mm
-Quar 28mm
These are the periods I have armies for and i actually play.

sumerandakkad14 Aug 2011 3:27 a.m. PST

3:- Ancients (25mm, 6mm), Renaissance (6mm) and Napoleonic(6mm)
I did play a lot of WH40K epic but have sold most of that now my kids have moved on from that.

Martin Rapier14 Aug 2011 3:53 a.m. PST

I play loads, but actually own stuff for

Ancients (Punic Wars and related areas)
WSS
Napoleonics
Colonial
RJW Naval
WW1
SCW
WW2
AiW
1960/70s Africa
1980s Cold War
Ultra modern
Star Wars
Various Fantasy

however 'WW1' and 'WW2' in particular cover a vats multitude of specific theatres, units and multiple scales. In deeply sad cases, the same unit in two or even three different scales.

So I'm not sure if they should count as more than one? 1914-15 Western Front in 15mm is very different to Mespotamia in 6mm or 1916-18 in 20mm. Similarly France 1940 is somewhat different to North Africa or the various periods of the Great Patriotic War.

nsolomon9914 Aug 2011 4:18 a.m. PST

5 historical periods plus W40k in 2 scales plus naval & WFB in 2 scales plus naval & LOTR in 2 scales

religon14 Aug 2011 5:22 a.m. PST

I game almost everything except from 1400 AD to 2011 AD. I make exceptions for pirate games, cowboy games and some historical skirmishes. I game all fantasy and most Sci-Fi excluding 40K. (Much of my historicals are in 15mm and 28mm, but fantasy/Sci-Fi are strictly 28mm.)

Mooseworks814 Aug 2011 5:51 a.m. PST

1. BattleTech is probably my first and foremost commitment.

2. Followed by MechWarrior, which I arguably have more stuff for, but that was easy as it was all pre-paints.

3. 15mm SF (Traveller and Dr. Who Daleks).

4. 15mm AK47R.

5. 10mm WW1 late war Western Front.

6. 10mm Spanish Civil War.

7. 10mm VietNam.

8. 6mm OGRE/GEV.

9. Spaceships a motley collection of.

Well that is a lot more periods and scales than I would have given myself credit for being involved with. No wonder I don't get any thing finished.

Whirlwind14 Aug 2011 7:35 a.m. PST

Collect is (3), Play is (4). But I'll reach (6) in a few years no doubt.

option 3 as a collector -- I will play anything.

Brent2751114 Aug 2011 5:43 p.m. PST

I never met a period I didn't want to game. I have all kinds of different figures, and different scales. It is a good thing that I have a very understanding wife.

Regards14 Aug 2011 6:15 p.m. PST

That would be choice 6 for "more than 16". I hate to admit, but I think it is more like doubling that number!

Yep, I'm an addict.

John the Greater15 Aug 2011 11:56 a.m. PST

I'll play whatever is on the table with a free seat.

Collect? It's hard to know how to count. Are my Indians and ECW one (renaissance) or two (renaissance and ECW, they both have their own boards). And where do the Paraguayan War figures fit? 19th Century seems too broad, so maybe they are their own period? And how about…well, you get the idea.

Perhaps there should be an "I'm baffled" answer?
