They do paint up very well..

rct7500112 Aug 2011 12:37 p.m. PST

And look wonderfully in perspective when painted, based as a unit and placed on the table

OH MY, OH MY !!!! --You mean they are not exactly "6mm"????
Oh the horrible shame that they are not true "6mm".
Just kidding --if I were to game in "6mm" I would use the Adler figs. They are the best --hands Down!! "world class"!!
Now every time I see adler mentioned I will have to intervene (kind of like Zorro) and warn and save everyone.

IMO, Adler are the finest figures below 15mm; really nice sculpting, well cast and they paint up so well.

I have 60,000+ Adler and game at 1-10 scale in Napoleonics and 1-7 in ACW. Have fought the entire Eastern 1862-1863 campaign with "all" the historical units. Besides being beautiful designs and castings; Adler does "campaign dress"… units in greatcoat, fatigue coats, as well as the usual dress uniforms. For example, in Napoleonics, the French hussars can be purchased with slung pelisse or wearing the dolman, for elites as well as regular companies. For chasseurs a cheval, you get dress uniform, blanket roles, and late. That is a lot of choices. Also, they do revolutionary, early, and late areas.

It was with Adler's Napoleonic "Corps Boxes" that first took the plunge into miniatures back in the early 90s. Up to that point, all I played were S&T and Avalon Hill boardgames.
I have not looked back since. Adlers are great and I like the large head and hats, it makes it easier for them to stand out.

Does anyone in the US sell Adler?

Bob

Ilodic14 Aug 2011 12:56 a.m. PST

Yes, historicalminiatures.com

But I think some of sculps are different than their main site in the UK, though someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

ilodic.

95thRegt14 Aug 2011 10:27 a.m. PST

TY!

Why would the sculpts be different??

Bob

Ilodic14 Aug 2011 11:06 a.m. PST

I think I was told by the Adler in the UK that Stone Mountain Miniatures cast their own figures from older moulds. The reason this came up is because I noticed on Adler's website different poses that were not offered by SMM here in the U.S. Of course I was only interested in Russian Naps, so I do not know if there have been more changes. I would take a close look at both sites and compare their inventory. The only problem I had with SMM, as I have ordered from them many times, is that I could never get in contact with a person. At the time I had to leave a message detailing my name, address, order, and credit card number. Despite all of this, they never messed up an order. This was not so much of a problem, but for some reason it took two weeks to the day each time to recieve the order. I now order from Ader directly because they have more to offer in terms of variety, with regards to the Russians at least, the price is about the same, including shipping, and usually I can recieve the order in about a week to a week and a half. Hope this helps,

ilodic.

Interesting, thanks. I'm looking into ACW,and theres no real rush to get them,so I may do the same.

Bob

isttexas14 Aug 2011 12:39 p.m. PST

Dear Bob/95thRegt,
The UK Adler have a really extensive range of ACW. Their "Collector Series" has an extremely large variety of figures…4 different poses on a single strip, a wide range of mounted staff, and figures in greatcoat, etc. Also, they have extensive personalities,… Grant, Sherman, Custer, etc: 2 Jackson poses, Longstreet, 2 Stuarts, Lee, etc. and equipment – wagons, limbers, etc, A very complete range!

95thRegt14 Aug 2011 3:58 p.m. PST

I think you just sold me on the UK Adler! Although,I plan on using mine for a diorama, not wargaming.

To add

so nice to paint up. Really easy to pick out the detail. Pics to follow

Gazzola15 Aug 2011 6:59 a.m. PST

Scally

I agree with you on that. Looking forward to seeing your pics.

60,000+Adler! Wow! I'm stunned. And I am no longer impressed with my mere 3,000 Adler collection now. But that should change, once I paint and base up another 57,000, if I live that long!

Ever thought of posting up some pics of your collection?

Beeker15 Aug 2011 9:32 a.m. PST

Yes, some pics would be wonderful.

I aspire to a large collection as well but won't have one until Leon finishes work on those sorely needed French Revolution Austrians and French additions. More hints here..

Beeker,
Im sorry early Austrians not around yet, couple of technical glitches particualrly with the Casquet badge. Hope to sort by end of the month.

isttexas15 Aug 2011 11:04 a.m. PST

Dear Gazzola,
I don't have "combined" photos of entire collection…takes up too much time and space to layout But I do have some pictures on my blog where I fought a Leipzig battle (24,000+ figures) and another where I put 12,000+ figures on the breakfast table (my wife is a sweetie!). The Leipzig game shows what can be done if you rent a hotel boardroom (not really that expensive $200 USD split 8 ways). Usually, I don't take many pictures…too busy playing and orchestrating games. Anyway, I hope you can see some of the scale of battle possible with Adler figures. Here is blog:

Thanks Leon

.. Isttexas.. *jaw-dropped n gob-smacked* WOW! That's an awesome collection. Well done! Well done!

isttexas15 Aug 2011 11:38 a.m. PST

Dear Beeker,
Twenty-three years of collecting Adler and a wife that helps me paint (actually "help" is unfair, she did "most" of the painting) is the backbone of how my collection came into being. Before Adler I had 15,000+ 15mm and sold them to start the Adlers.

Be patient, with Leon, it takes time because he does it all (design, cast, post, etc).
But he always "gets it done". And it is always magnificent figures.

I know that this is just one man's collection but I hope it inspires other gamers to be persistent and dream big!

Beeker15 Aug 2011 11:43 a.m. PST

oh I know isttexas… I've been after Leon for new additions since 1998! LOL!

Cheers!
Beeker

PS.. hug your wife and say 'thank-you.. love your work" for me. :)

isttexas15 Aug 2011 11:48 a.m. PST

Beeker,
I am a lucky man and know it! I always tease her by telling her:

"I am the smartest man in the world because I married her!"

"And well she may not be so smart because look who she married…a wargammer!"

ArmybitUK15 Aug 2011 1:22 p.m. PST

First few testers

They look a lot nicer if the camera was not so good! look good when in my hand, however not so good on the camera shot!

Silly question here, but what do you get for that price?? It doesn't say. Or did i overlook it?

Bob

isttexas15 Aug 2011 1:43 p.m. PST

Dear Scally,
Are you kidding? Those look great! What with the blacklining, shadding, painted lips, etc. I really like the paint job on the musket… very fine details!

Gazzola15 Aug 2011 1:46 p.m. PST

Scally

I second isttexas comment. Lovely pics. Seeing them makes me glad I did not decide to go up a scale, well, not for big battles anyway.

Gazzola15 Aug 2011 1:50 p.m. PST

isttexas

If I asked my wife to paint up some miniatures, she would respond with asking me to paint the kitchen or something. So I'm sticking with the wargaming and she's sticking with the DIY.

95thRegt15 Aug 2011 4:21 p.m. PST

OK, i really need to order from them! lol

Bob

ArmybitUK16 Aug 2011 12:43 a.m. PST

thankyou
the figures make it easy

DHautpol16 Aug 2011 3:14 a.m. PST

I like the look of the Russian units with two standards, I gave mine only one each but am thinking that will need to change having seen how good it looks.

Oh well, only about 60-65 new standards to paint and work out how to get them integrated into the units. Probably need to prise an infantryman off the command bases to make space, which will give me enough figures for another 4-5 units which will just need command figures added. The only conversion work I'll need is to repaint some of the shoulder straps.

LeonAdler Sponsoring Member of TMP16 Aug 2011 11:49 a.m. PST

Just a suggestion, stick the extra standard on some steel wire and pop it into a crowded part of the base near the other standard no one will notice there isnt a specific figure carrying it.
L

Beeker17 Aug 2011 5:50 a.m. PST

Leon, re. stick in the extra flag… not quite cricket, is it? :)

re. Austrian Kasket: What is fiddly? The front plaque (badge) or the side pompom.. I'm all for no badge as I can paint that on! ;) (just doing my part to help out!)

LeonAdler Sponsoring Member of TMP17 Aug 2011 1:06 p.m. PST

Well reckon most would see a plain casquet front as a definate minus point and would reduce what I predict as lousy sales even more. Making the double headed eagle plate look right is an important part of getting the look of the figure right.

Scally,

Those are incredible figures! Brilliant paint job!

Looks like 1sttexas' wife has some competition!

I'm dieing to paint my own collection (currently thwarted by a young family). These are great motivation.

Cheers!

Scally,
Those are great! Keep up the good work!

von Winterfeldt19 Aug 2011 7:26 a.m. PST

@Leon Adler

the plate alone (without engraving) would do – a lot would still carry the JII engraved plate instead of the double Adler, this could be painted easily ;-).

Beeker19 Aug 2011 7:44 a.m. PST

Von Winterfeldt! Thank god you are here!

I've been dieing for support here.. Christopher has gone AWOL and I seem to be the only one cheering Leon on for the Austrians.. he seems to be losing heart.

Hang in there Leon!

Beeker

von Winterfeldt19 Aug 2011 10:41 p.m. PST

OK – now I understand Leon Adler, an egale plate – a must – there Adler means egale ;-)
