I've been a sci-fi guy for a long time, but last year I began playing Song of Blades and Heroes with my club. Until now, I'd been using rebased D&D prepaints. I wanted to try my hand at fantasy figs and see how different companies figure copmpared, so I picked up various figs from B-Town, flea market, friends and Games Plus. Luckily mixed warbands work well in SoBH.

Here is "The Union of the Green":

Warband leader. A Scottish looking dog by Dark Sword miniatures.

Echindox. A reaper fantasy Groundhog

Dwarf Druid by Reaper

Cat man. Not sure what kind of cat or what brand. My friend thinks it's from a line called 100 armies.

Half Giant By Magnificent Ego's

Dwarf Slayer by Hasslefree Miniatures

A hare warrior. A very old Ral Partha figure

All together. Last night they played 2 games of a SoBH Campaign. Won one and lost one. The last 2-3 games of the campaign are going to happen in 2 weeks.

All were painted as follows:
Prime with Gesso
Block colors
"Dip": Brushed on Minwax polyshades. Either Minwax Antique Walnut (Similar to AP Strong Tone) or Tudor (Like AP Dark tone).
Eyes and Drybrush for hair
Matte Spray
Base

Not Pro-Level by any means, but I'm really pleased with the results.

Well painted and very original mix IMHO, and really a showcase of what "weird partners" may end up in a SBH warband.

Nicely done, I like your theme.

Great work, ordinarybass. I agree with GG, I love the eclectic mix.

I am also working on a "wee good guy" woodland warband. I am using Reaper mouselings & fairies; others I haven't decided on yet.

These are very nicely painted, and exactly the kind of army I'd love to play, congrats! Just one comment: I'd say that "groundhog" is really a hedgehog.

Really nice! I especially like the Catman and the Dwarf Slayer…

Very very nice selection of figures.

I hope you have more luck that I do with my Skaven grin

The cat is a Panthera Tribe Jaguar archer from Black Orc games 100k.blackorc.com/kingdoms.php – love the albino look – goes well with the figure.

I love the dwarf druid esp. the manic look you've painted in the eyes!

Thanks folks, glad you like them!

As to the eclectic mix,
It's a result of the fact that only one of these figs was purchased at retail. The rest are 1 and 2 buck figs that I acquired 2nd hand with the only guide being that I wanted them to be "woodsey"

SoSulivan,
You're half right, definitely a mistype on my end, but I was just informed by a friend that it's actually an Echida. link , a sort of Spikey Ausie Micro anteater. A delightfully silly looking beast.

Andrew,
Thanks for the link. I really was curious about his origins. He's my first experiement (along with the Scotty dog) with the Minwaz Polyshades Tudor (black pigmented) dip. I'm really pleased with the results and I'll be using it on some green armored aliens soon.

The dwarf druid was a happy accident. I'm not too good with eyes so when the pupils went on crooked, instead of wiping it off (easy to do when painting over a dip) I just left it as it seemed suitably crazed.

the dwarf slayer is fantazation not hasslefree

ordinarybass13 Aug 2011 6:12 a.m. PST

Oops, yes, right you are!

I have hasslefree and a Fantazation, and it looks like I mixed them up even though they're vasty different styles.

Lovely work.
SBH warbands are a great start to fantasy gaming.
Love the Echida (hedgehog/groundhog/whatever as in actress/model/whatever)

What's a "half-giant"? Is he a big man or a dwarf giant? LOL
Looking good either way and love that repeating crossbow. Mobile artillery, excellent.
