Do you like the current plastic giant?

Do you have one (at least)?

Would you buy one if your army allowed it on your army list?

Any thoughts of said giant even if you do not need or want one? Like it? Love it? Hate it?

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 3:10 p.m. PST

Some of the possible options with the kit…

I hate the current giant.

and that nurgle giant is disgusting

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 3:23 p.m. PST

Sorry ghost I did not mean to offend :(

It is a Chaos Nurgle (Lord of Rot) Giant…disgusting is spot on for the subject.

But again I did not mean to cause grief.

PS
Sorry you hate the current giant.

The Gray Ghost08 Aug 2011 3:25 p.m. PST

I'll survive:)

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 3:28 p.m. PST

Cool! I hate cheesing people off :)

Delthos08 Aug 2011 3:36 p.m. PST

I think it's a good kit. It goes together very nicely, just as a majority of their new plastic kits do. Most of the seams are hidden by pieces you put on over the seams, so there is a minimum amount of gap filling. There are tons of options for it. Four different heads, two arm options for each arm, four or so different hand/weapon options for its right arm, two options for it's left arms, three differnt feet options, plus tons of other extras that are great to add variety to it, or like I did use for terrain and other stuff. They did a very good job giving options to customize it for the different armies that have it for an option.

That being said, I've got one for my Warriors of Chaos army. I don't see myself getting another one any time soon. I don't really like them play wise, they are easily taken out by Cannons, Bolt Throwers, and other various stuff. They just never seem to perform up to their potential in my experience.

I gotta say, I love that "Jump Up and Down" conversion!

skinkmasterreturns08 Aug 2011 3:42 p.m. PST

I liked and did have at one time, the previous generation metal(I think the Perrys' did that one). I did a dragonskull cap conversion on it. Luckily, when I sold it,a friend bought it,so I can still see it from time to time.

haywire08 Aug 2011 4:09 p.m. PST

I do not have one (yet), but I have always liked what I have seen people do with the kit.

like Delthos said, it has so many conversion pieces that its worth at least one.

Cadian 7th08 Aug 2011 4:12 p.m. PST

I like the kit…it is really was designed well. I have one, although I'd like to get some other bits…smashed goblin, sign post, skeleton … I'd probably not buy another full kit.
The dragon kit however…..;)

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 4:22 p.m. PST

I for one see loads of potential in this kit. While not cheap, there is lots to work with.

I like it myself.trying to get one cheap is difficult but I'll score one someday!

Beowulf Fezian08 Aug 2011 5:28 p.m. PST

I really dislike the new Giant. I prefer the earlier one.

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 6:06 p.m. PST

That is two against…I am curious what aspect is dislikable?

Not for a fight, I am interested :)

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 6:11 p.m. PST

Was it this one?

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 6:16 p.m. PST

This one?

I am leaving it on, because the older guys will get all nostalgic but I think this one was a Grenadier :)

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 6:28 p.m. PST

This one?

The first option you show, the one with the scaly cap. Even though it is shorter, it looks more powerful. The platic one, with the narrow shoulders, hunched and potbellied looks sick (I think this giant was modelled after a specific disease).
I love all the accesories that come with the plastic kit, though.

RazorMind08 Aug 2011 7:14 p.m. PST

It is fantastic, and too nurgly, pffttt, can never be too nurgly :-) Warriors of Chaos giant rules when you give it Mark of Slaanesh (Always Strikes First)

(Leftee)08 Aug 2011 7:22 p.m. PST

Love the new Giant – took 2lbs of concrete, rebar and welding flux to hold the old metal one together. Look forward to picking up a few of these for Storm of Magic and for my Orcs – keep my metal 'golem' happy with the company.

Johnny Aces08 Aug 2011 8:27 p.m. PST

I have a couple of the old Marauder Giants lying around somewhere. Used to run a Savage Orc focused Orc and Goblin army under 4th or 5th edition. Two Giants, 10-12 Savage Orc Boar boys with a Shaman and General. Then they got crippled under the next edition.

I like the new kit even though I don't own it. He does look a little thin in the legs, but the plastic allows for some great conversions. So many great pieces in one kit, maybe a system of magnets to allow you to swap amongst armies?

Love the Lizard man conversion. Hate the Giants of Albion(sp?) and I own them.

28mmMan08 Aug 2011 9:16 p.m. PST

@new evo

The giants of Albion are odd…perfect for converting!

Magnets would work.

Why couldn't you use the same giant?

"The plastic one, with the narrow shoulders, hunched and potbellied looks sick (I think this giant was modeled after a specific disease)"

That is the general consensus, that a less like a stock human in larger scale would be more appealing to the general audience so the designer used the most extreme of our giants within humanity as a template and then accentuated these features…using some of the features common to our own giants.

I suspect Andre the Giant was the basic model

The giants weren't crippled, my army list was. Most of my army became specials or rares, resulting in my retiring the list. Still have them packed away in a box, but they haven't been played under the newer editions at all.

Delthos09 Aug 2011 5:45 a.m. PST

I don't think he looks like real world giants. To me the model looks like the results of hundreds of years of inbreeding.

Thomas Whitten09 Aug 2011 6:52 a.m. PST

I don't really like the plastic giant. The last incarnation of the GW metal one is my favorite.

Thomas Whitten09 Aug 2011 9:08 a.m. PST

The one with the jaw bone tied on. I think the large belly on the plastic one is what I dislike the most. The Grenadier Goblin War Giant is great as well. Those Goblins on it look like GW Hobgoblins (in my eyes at least) and it is part of my Chaos Dwarf army.

How big was that giant? To be honest, in my eyes that "jawbone" giant looks like an ogre (which is ok, because I like ogres also) and makes me think of Blood Bowl; which in itself is not an issue as I enjoy a game of crush the dwarf as much as anyone else :)

The current plastic giant does look inbred, which makes some sense…I can not imagine there are many giants to begin with…choices being limited, the family tree tends to grow without too many branches :)

The big gut makes me think of gluttony…this great beast shoving in vast amounts of food and drink…"make sure you you stay out of sight when Ooolgrak starts eating!"

*****

Opinions being what they are I still find it interesting that people gravitate one way or the other on a particular miniature…which is why I started the thread :)

For the guys who do not like the current plastic giant, does this dislike have anything to do with it being made of plastic? Some folks just plain do not like plastics. Which is ok, I am just curious…you guys are my extended "local" gaming buddies so this is what we would be discussing over pizza anyway :)

Thomas Whitten09 Aug 2011 11:11 a.m. PST

I'll have the measure the "jawbone" giant. I believe it was twice as tall as the Ogres in production at its release. I think the larger of the current ogres are maybe 2/3rds its size?

As for the current plastic giant, I like that it is plastic. If I ever get that one, it will be easier for me convert.

But this is how I like to picture my giants:

picture

28mmMan09 Aug 2011 2:43 p.m. PST

Right, classic big guy…same scale as the mundane humanoids.

There was a long discussion on another forum about the physical form of the giants and the general consensus was that most times in our real world the large size came with issues…certain parts of the body growing fast than others, like the skull, femurs, jaw bones, etc. as well as the muscles doing wacky things.

I am with you about the image above, a proper giant of Greek aspects has its place to be sure.

The plastic is fun because it is easy to convert.

I do like the current plastic giant…I like the weird body shape, I figured it was a result of being twisted by the storms of chaos :)

The good news is that if you prefer the Greek standard body shape you could look at some of the really nice 120mm historical types or the cheap direction of a decent action figure (heavily modified :) Especially if you are putting a civilized template on the great beast.

Tiny Legions05 Oct 2011 11:33 a.m. PST

I did not even think about using 120mm miniatures, 28mm. That is a great idea that I may be interested in trying. Do you have any suggested manufactures?

SeattleGamer07 Oct 2011 4:19 p.m. PST

I do not like the newest giant. Sickly, potbellied, meh.

Love that it is plastic.
Love the extra bits you get.
Love you can go for a non-human head, feet, etc.

But he should strike fear into me, not look like he does nothing but drink beer and watch Nascar.

Hunched is fine. I'd imagine a "real" ginat would spend all of its time looking down, and trying to grab small things to eat (like horses).

Don't expect "standard human form but larger". But the potbelly is a total turn off.

I have one, old (Citadel) metal giant, no jaw-bone thing. He's short compared to all the others, but he still gets the job done. I like his patchwork clothing (looks to be made from over a dozen different tents). Wears a shield for a ring, a mail shirt for a hand glove, etc.

If GW ever release a new giant, in plastic, with all the mod pieces, but with a better torso, I might get a second. Until then, "Tiny" can still wail on anything he can reach, including giants twice his size. Game stats are what they are, regardless of the model.

Here is a picture of a batch of GW Giants.

My favorite is the one just to the FW giant's right. The FW one is the white primed big one.

Notice, I have an ogre and pitfighter in the front to help demonstrate scale.

SeattleGamer25 Oct 2011 5:09 p.m. PST

Yep, the bearded one with the barrel of Bugmans XXX for his canteen is the one I have, and of all those pictured, still my favorite.

Skinny, pigeon-toed one to the far left is not buff enough, nor is the one to the far right. An axe or sword should look like it would embed in a calf if it struck true, and not slice all the way through.

After the bearded one came the one shown primed in black. He had a good build, and looked tough enough to take on a bunch of troops. Nothing sissy about that one either.

Thomas Whitten27 Oct 2011 10:36 a.m. PST

I'd say the black primed on is my second favorite. I never liked the Albion ones very much. I picked them up because when they came out, I picked up pretty much everything Warhammer.

My plans, like they ever get done, is such.

The bearded one will be painted up to match my Empire army.
The black primed one will go with Orcs and Goblins.
The plastic one is for my beastmen warrior army. I'll be shaving down the belly and adding tufts of fur. Hopefully to give the illusion of not being so weedy.

The best things about the plastic giant are the bits. The are of great use to me for Morheim. And I use the running figure in the set as my character in the Warhammer RPG.

NapoleonsMarshal03 Nov 2011 1:16 p.m. PST

My question is: Why is the TK Bone Giant so tiny compared to these guys? He's more like a Bone "Slightly-taller-than an-ogre" than a Bone "Giant". Are they ever going to release a new kit?

KramerBassFan14 Nov 2011 10:42 a.m. PST

I got one of the newer plastic giants.

Had a good time converting him to fit my Spanish Conquistador Army (Dogs of War), made up exclusively of Pikemen with Morion Helmets, and Morion Helmed Crossbow men. Oh how i love that army… even if i doubt i could Game it today!
