Giant Monster gaming: do you PREFER to use named monsters ************************** typo **************************** You know, the famous ones? Is the giant monster/robot gaming made better or even fueled by your desire to play the role of Gozilla, Ultra Man, Gamera, or other? If you use the Godzilla figure do you try your best to point/power the model up to emulate the big G? Reason I ask is that I like all the models in some measure
but I have tendency to chop up the less than great examples of monster figures and use them to make other monsters
my loyalty as it seems runs to the quality of the actual sculpt/casting rather than the name. Now keep in mind I am not buying a $100 USD model and chopping it up
rather it is the $5 USD ones that need fear going under the knife. But for those of you who do not commit such collector offenses, do you honor the named characters or do you use the models as what they represent to the mundane layman
giant reptile, great robot, etc.? ***** I guess I should say, do you collect to fill a list from a show/movie or collect to have models to battle with? (yeah I know, both
but first and foremost, which direction?) :) |

I once played a giant monster game. The fellow running it used 12"+ models from Japan. So we had'em all, Godzilla, King Ghidra, Mecha-Godzilla, etc. Playing the 'real thing' is a blast. Economics would cause me to use 'similar' models if I were to make my own game though.-:^( |

I'm right around 50/50
I like the classics but I enjoy making up new ones as well. If I HAD to pick just one I'd go with DIY variety. |

I like the named famous critters. It is fun for example to watch Godzilla Final Wars with my daughter and then play with the figures

Nope, prefer to roll my own. |

I prefer named monsters, mecha, etc
I enjoy being able to mix the different characters from different genres/shows. -Ken Radioactive Press |

Real kaiju. Mix and match studios. The occaisional non-canon figure that has a fanciful fit anyway. |

I mostly use non-famous monsters (from Monpoc), since I created stats for them in GMR first. I've had a harder time creating stats for the famous ones, especially when trying to balance points. |

pushes button :) I like the mix of options in the crowd! A good balance. Another thought, mostly for the "I like the named monsters" types but for anyone to answer :) Do you prefer the classic version of your favorite daikaiju, mecha, or other
or
the more modern versions? ***** Easy to figure I appreciate the old b/w movies; born in 1965 I fell in TV as a kid with plenty of giant monsters
but I am on board the modern versions for most monsters
it is hard not to jump on the wagon of higher production values, greater budgets, and special effects that are more than rubber suits and sparklers :) But I still watch my old movies, memories are what they are
when it comes to giant monsters (especially for gaming) I prefer a look that offers some appearance of being a monster rather than a guy in a rubber suit :) |

I like both. I have a bunch of the 8"-10" "named" Bandai vinyl figures. I also use the smaller Gashapon figures from almost everything out there including custom figures. |

Do you prefer the classic version of your favorite daikaiju, mecha, or other
or
the more modern versions? All of the above of course. In the 4" range they've made a majority of the different suit styles for the Big G (sadly none of the cutesy mid-60's suits), all of the Mecha Godzillas, most if not all of the Mothras. I have each version statted out for Monster Island with slight variations that reflect how that particular version performed in its movie(s) |

There was a particular model that caught my eye that made me think of this thread. This thicker, a more realistic dinosaur inspired version of Godzilla. He has me intrigued, and as I do not have issues of unwavering loyalty I can appreciate the added Godzilla details and the intent of the Big G flavor.
This is the Stoutasaurus Godzilla, is it just me or does it remind you of the Calvin and Hobbs spaceman spiff type of dinosaur villain?
