I'm building up a force of Khurasan's Vesplulids for my son; I already have a few of the swarms and some ion mortars, but I was hoping to find some vehicles that would fit with the figures.
I had thought to find even scale model insects to kitbash, but I'm not seeing much that I like. Any thoughts on kits that would look good along side the swarms? Jeff |

Paint a Dictator in yellow and black, it'll fit. |
Jeff W | 02 Aug 2011 10:35 a.m. PST |
Yeah, it would. I hadn't really looked at that kit before. |

28mm Spriggan Jumpspugs as some kind of support mecha – if you want to keep the whole army flight-capable. link link Or convert the 28mm Spug Power Armor with jump packs like the Vespulids have, if you want something heavier.

For my insect forces I'm using Khurasan's Ogre Beetle as an AFV. I'm also using various Starship Troopers bug figs as support/transport. Just a thought. |

Better to go with something mechanical, with a hexagonal theme, than the biological trope. I should really add an entry to TV Tropes about aliens with vehicles that look like them. As if we go out of our way to build vehicles that look like people

Too bad the Top Gun Ace weird tanks are OOP at the moment
their hexagonal ERA would go well. Building vehicles that look like the alien doesn't make sense as such, but if you're going to build a walker it'll probably resemble the alien's form or the form of one of their planet's fauna. |

@emkinney – Thank you for this comment. It has always bothered me that somehow alien equipment has a tendency to look like it. I can see this to a degree depending on culture, but vehicle form usually fits function with some asthetic choices but few. Interestingly enough, one of the little "mysteries" of the new Falling Skies series is why six-legged bug centails would make two-legged bipedal humanoid mecha. I have my own theories but I found it cool that they bothered. -Eli |

@emu2020- It's totally artificial for me. I'm just imposing a human and subjective aesthetic on it. I like my some of my forces to look unified in theme even at the expense of logic. Admittedly, though, my son could probably care less- I'm building the army for him. I think I'm going to order up one of those dictators, I have a large hexagonal cannon from a scifi toy that I think might jive well with it. |

OK this might sound just far too weird, but what about paper mache-ing a ball, sticking it on a wire flight stand, and gluing lots of Vespie back packs onto it? Basically a floating wasp bike

In real life? No. In science fiction

Buy this and change out the gun. These are 1/72 scale and the same size as GW tanks & APCs. auction |

Saw this online, he's using the Transformers Crossovers Rex tank for his Highlander space bugs, and it is a sight beetle-ish, I confess. Check this link for more pics: link |

Jeff, though it's not specifically vespulid, I have a vehicle coming out within the next few months that is right up your street. And a little further down the line, I'll finally get the enormous Vornid pirate galley cast (I've had it for several months) and that thing is mega-odd, could very well be used for the vespulids too. My thought on the Vespulids is that they are purely fast attack creatures, swooping down on the enemy using jet packs and getting mixed up in close assault right away. To fit with the hornet motif, a few members of each unit have tank controllers, and if they can attach them to prey vehicles they can control that vehicle -- much the way that wasps do to much larger insects such as cockroaches or spiders. Well, that was the thought anyway. Still have to ask Mike to make the vespulid queen for me, as well as the maggots. I really keep him too busy

More massive vehicles Jon? You have a lot of stuff in the wings still! Whatever happened to the Timonid/space Demon hybrid thingies? -Eli |

Insect-like and mechanical? No school like the old school:

The model is 1/72 scale, so it would IMHO make for a handy super heavy walker for the Vespulids

Scotia still produce a few 25mm resin organic alien grav vehicles from the old Kyromek range, i think the Drone APC below could be easily used with the Vespulids in mind

I would think that captured vehicles would work well. That's what that controller thing is for afterall. "Stealing" a vehicles controls during battle. Nothing that says they're not smart enough to modify captured vehicles to their liking, or to a standard that makes them more easily maintained by their own engineers. |
