Pendraken look noticably bigger than OG.

meledward2304 Aug 2011 9:07 a.m. PST

Height wise they are the basically same. Pendraken certainly are stockier and stronger features.

For me Pendraken paint fast and easy, but OG paint a bit faster because you do 5 front and backs but only two sides.

Horses Pendraken are slightly smaller. You could fit 5 pendrakens on a 40x20, perhaps needing 42mm. OG, 4 horses can be a tight fit.

I really am torn between Pendraken and OG10. I like things about OG10 and things about Pen. But the deal sealer for me is Pendrakens service. Samples and photos.

Thanks.

I have to say that the Baccus figures look dreadful; just my opinion of course.

Grizzlymc04 Aug 2011 2:21 p.m. PST

They dont arrive painted black

1234567804 Aug 2011 2:27 p.m. PST

The raw ones look worse than the undercoated ones. Still, I guess the same is probably true of most 6mm figures when looking at them at larger than life size.

Grizzlymc04 Aug 2011 3:05 p.m. PST

Well, 15s look pretty sad next to a 25, or 20s next to a 28.

If you want detail you can go 54mm or 1/6th scale.

meledward2304 Aug 2011 6:45 p.m. PST

no they dont arrive black, but they do arrive with 1 out of every 4 bayonets broken off.

I have seen some well painted baccuss stuff. If I had 15mm naps I would include them in a comparison shot for you as well.

1234567804 Aug 2011 11:06 p.m. PST

Grizzly, I don't want the same level of detail from a 6mm figure as I would from a 15mm. However, I do want figures that actually look something like a human.

Khusrau05 Aug 2011 6:42 a.m. PST

The Baccus figures are excellent.. have a look at some painted examples:

Hi

One thing worth considering amongst all this is play area – although many people view 6mm as being a scale where you use considerably larger amounts of figures over the same sized play surface I think there is another option.

Having 10-30 figure units and playing over a compact play surface – perhaps a metre square.

Not everyone has a large area to play in and this is a viable option.

1234567805 Aug 2011 7:22 a.m. PST

Khusrau, those look a lot better; maybe some of the ones shown before are earlier sculpts. Still not sure that I would go as far as "excellent" though.

Nice work Khusrau.

For the last dozen years or so the 10mm – 6mm world is the one I have inhabited. First the 10mm -ish armies. I have ECW armies (12mm AIM, now produced by Minifigs owned by Caliver, I think. Plus some Pendraken cavalry); WSS (10mm Pendraken, and some Irregular, and OG Generals), newly bought SYW (10mm Pendraken), FPW (10mm Pendraken, and some Perrin/Magister Militum). Collecting all these has been a joy. The suppliers have been really easy to deal with, and Pendraken in particular have been very kind in making up exactly what I wanted, and not charging over the odds for it. Pendraken is now producing some incredible figures, with a lot of really talented sculptors. It has a great forum and a good website. The only criticism is something of a shortage of photos at present of their vast ranges, but this is slowly being rectified. My 6mm armies are confined to Ancients, but here I would put in a big, big plug for Baccus. Their latest sculpts are not excellent – they are SUPERB! The Spanish cavalry for the Punic wars are wonders, and pretty well all the re-done Punic sculpts are of a similar standard. It is now some 35 years since I gave up Napoleonics as a period, it is only continuous exposure to Peter Berry's Baccus stall at shows that is starting to tempt me back. His re-done Napoleonic ranges paint up very, very well, and his website is a market leader for showing the painted finished product for you to judge before you buy. I have no experience of Adler, so cannot judge. I think the best advice so far, is get some samples, and see how they suit your own painting style. I have found that is not as clear cut as you might think simply looking at bare metal. Anyway I hope you enjoy the process, whichever way you go.

Again 3 out of the 4 have a broken bayonet. That way when I received them. It's like GW high elves all over again (warmaster).

Anyway, the shot is 6mm BAccuss Russian next to Indian. I wonder where that stand is.

Hello Private Matter!

It's really a no brainer, as you can clearly see from Khusrau's pictures Baccus figures are WORLD CLASS and if he didn't tell you they were 6mm you might never know they were. They also clearly show how good they look in mass which was one of your objectives. The other is cost and Baccus offers the best value in 6mm and 10mm are close to twice the price or more.

I have a few thousand Baccus figures and only received a couple with broken bayonets years ago from their older moulds. If any figures arrive that don't meet your expectations contact them at once as their customer service is also WORLD CLASS.

Best regards,

Glenn

I love it when the fanboys come out to play:). What exactly does "world class" mean in this context? Is there a sort of elite wargames show, where only the very best manufacturers in the world are allowed to sell their wares?

Duke,

That looks stunning! Many thanks for linking to it.

Is there a sort of elite wargames show

There may very well be, but apparently you and I weren't invited.

Thanks for that link, Duke. I'm deeply impressed (and with some of the great efforts I've seen, I get harder and harder to impress.)

With the exception of the stand-up unit tags (and this is a very personal and minor quibble, given that the rule system used requires the ability to identify individual units on the table), one of the best wargame layouts I've seen, in any scale.

Kudos to everyone who contributed, and thanks for showing off the kind of event which nicely illustrates the potential of 10mm wargaming.

Last Hussar07 Aug 2011 2:59 p.m. PST

I get 3 Pendraken WSS (closest I have to 10mm Napoleonics) on a 20mm frontage.

Caesar07 Aug 2011 8:03 p.m. PST

"What exactly does "world class" mean in this context?"

Baccus customer service is top-notch. He will send you replacements for any miscasts or broken models you receive.
I'll give you an example and perhaps you'll see what I mean.
Before Scale Creep started carrying Baccus in the US, there was another company, Heritage, that did. Heritage went out of business, but just after I bought a lot of Baccus models from him. The order was missing models and some of the models sent were not what I ordered. I contacted Pete at Baccus about it because Heritage was no more, explained what happened and he sent me replacements for what was missing/mispacked, even though he wasn't directly responsible for it happening. That's customer service.

Caesar,

That is indeed good service; however, it is not that different from that provided by some other manufacturers. There was a degree of irony in my question as the poster to whom I was responding was shouting that they provided WORLD CLASS figures and service and seemed to think that we should all be told that they looked like figures in a larger scale than 6mm, which they do not.

I just happen to find fanboys amusing.

Colin

Caesar08 Aug 2011 6:29 a.m. PST

Hi, Colin. I did get your point, but I wanted to let you know that it is actually "world class" and not just over-enthusiasm from a fan.

Private Matter08 Aug 2011 7:31 p.m. PST

A lot of great suggestions. So many in fact you made it harder for me rather than easier. Oh well, I think I've made up my mind.

Once again thanks for all the suggestions.

In my collection I have redline, old glory and pendraken, they mix alright, however i wouldn't mix them on the same stand.

I can highly recomed 10mm as the figures are small enough to get divisions onto the table without being too small to make out.

good luck on choosing a scale. As I have seen 6mm wonderfully painted but I know I couldn't paint them to that standard.

yorkie o111 Aug 2011 3:33 a.m. PST

I have painted many baccus 6mm Napoleonics, and they do paint up very nicely, and quickly. The bayonets are however very fragile, but the newer sculpts have apparently sorted this out.

I am planning my next Napoleonic project, and initially decided on 10mm, the best samples i was sent were the bend sinister ones (Redline), very nice, crisp details and hardly any, if any flash. Only problem is the limited range, and glacially slow releases.

So i'm considering 15mm Campaign games miniatures instead.

Steve.
