A recent thread within the 15mm science fiction board brought the scale/size value for 15mm
being decent sized monsters/giant mecha and robots without being too large. Some TMPers may not be familiar with the line so I thought I would share a few pics. The idea that these miniatures could be used for monster on monster, 15mm, 28mm, etc. makes them a bit more economical
they are not that expensive to begin with. And with a deft hand and repainting we can find them having more value IMO There are many factions within the game itself, so I will only show a couple pics to show some of the variety. 28mm,I agree. I use the Lords of Cthul figures as "troll-sized" creatures in my horror 28mm games. When you buy them you get two large figures for one price. One may be transparent, but that is why we paint. |

I was using Lords of Cthul in my Strange Aeons (28mm) games for a while

I've used the Monpoc units (Cthul & Terrasaurs) as monsters in 15mm sci-fi games with the Gun Crawl rules. I have some pictures somewhere. I'll have to dig some up. |

"I've used the Monpoc units (Cthul & Terrasaurs) as monsters in 15mm sci-fi games with the Gun Crawl rules. I have some pictures somewhere. I'll have to dig some up" Please do
ooo hahha! (it never gets old for me :) |

I was looking through the MonPoc miniatures again
I certainly do like many of the designs
not for the MonPoc game per say, as I have not had the opportunity to play as of yet
but for other giant monster games
I do like the designs. I had a second thought
I really appreciate the designs from Heavy Gears. I wonder if anyone out there has any of the new and old Gears that they could provide a scale/size comparative picture with a MonPoc monster miniature? Even if the Gears are smaller, then use 2-5 against a monster
mmmmm sounds good to me :) I did find this one (the quote says it is an older version, but I thought they were larger)
Here is another compare shot with a couple 15mm infantry types and the current 1/144th scale, so by the same we can see that the fear are smaller but not tiny.
***** Here is a MonPoc monster with some 15mm alien infantry
***** So a 1:1 MonPoc vs Heavy Gears would work in my eyes :) |

I did find this one (the quote says it is an older version, but I thought they were larger) 28mmMan, that Gear in your pic next to the GW Space Marine is probably 'old' in the sense that it's one of the earlier generations of the post-HO scale stuff, not the truly-old HO product. I have a few of the ones from this era along with the new stuff, and they are a tiny bit different in size from the current HG Blitz minis – supposedly in Blitz they slightly exaggerated size differences, so the recon gears are smaller and the support gears are larger than a strict scaling would have them be (in the 'middle' generation they tended to be much closer to the same size). Hope that helps clear up what that caption meant about it being an older mini. Unfortunately while I have plenty of (shamefully unpainted) Heavy Gear minis, I don't have any Monpoc stuff for comparison pics. |

"Unfortunately while I have plenty of (shamefully unpainted) Heavy Gear minis, I don't have any Monpoc stuff for comparison pics" Ken, let us kill two birds with one stone then. Send me some of the Heavy Gears, I will paint them. And then take some pics of those gears with MonPoc monsters, so we can all share :) (ooooohhh ooo "wringing hands and gnashing teeth" if he only knew I was going to keep the gears, heheheheh
oh wait
did I say that out loud?

Do you guys have a favorite standout miniatures among the various 12 factions? Most have a caricature design but their are a few gems IMO. I am curious which one stands out as a winner for you, just on looks alone not the powers or abilities? |
28mmMan | 30 Jul 2011 2:21 p.m. PST |
For me I have few that jump up and down for attention; Cthugrosh
Gorghadra
Mucustos
Xixorax
Crustaceor

Though the last three are in serious need of repainting :) |

Partially painted 15mm Rebel Minis Earth Force Marines with a couple Terrasaurs – Carnidons.
My favorite monsters are the Planet Eaters – Gorgahdra & Rogzor. Can't really explain why, but I like them most. |

ooooo hahaha
here is your Rogzor
He is fun also! By your game pic above, somebody is going to have a bad day. |
28mmMan | 30 Jul 2011 5:18 p.m. PST |
The Planet Eaters do have some interesting paint jobs with the high metal yellow gold. Good stuff. |
sharkbait | 30 Jul 2011 5:20 p.m. PST |
The 2 Carnidons did have a bad day. They Marines had a couple rocket launchers with them. High Explosives FTW!! I've thought about re-painting some of my "Ultra" monsters. However, there's a much bigger pile of 15mm minis higher on the to do list. |

Sharkbait
(sigh, you know it's coming :)
oooo hahahha
how many ultras do you have? I have a bunch of ideas for painting with special effects
I was just pricing when I read your post. "The 2 Carnidons did have a bad day. They Marines had a couple rocket launchers with them. High Explosives FTW!!" I assume that they were fighting on a spaceship? Even if an underground installation, you let your troopers fire rocket launchers in restricted space with potential of structure collapse? lol Baby with the bathwater :) |
Rogue Zoat | 30 Jul 2011 6:02 p.m. PST |
Well I've thought of using my Monpoc critters with outer games but I prefer to just line them up and just stare at them lovingly for some reason. I do enjoy playing Monpoc but it's a game I don't get the chance to play much.

28mm – I have all the Alpha/Ultra monsters from the first series, and a couple from later series (King Kondo & Leviathron). The fighting depicted in the picture was from an underground facility. I have no problem with using high explosives inside! ;-) |
flintlocklaser | 30 Jul 2011 7:26 p.m. PST |
28mmMan, throw me a PM; most of my HG minis have places in my Big Long-Term Plans (capitalized to emphasize how great those plans are) but I think I probably have a Jager (the South's general-purpose trooper gear) that I can spare. As long as you live someplace where the postage would be reasonable I'll be happy to throw him your way. (having said that I'm going on vacation tomorrow, so if I don't reply until Wednesday that's why!) |
28mmMan | 30 Jul 2011 10:04 p.m. PST |
PM sent and thanks for the thought
we can work out the details and hopefully I can offer something in return :) Enjoy your vacation. |

Couple different Heavy Gears with 15mm and 28mm miniatures.
|
28mmMan | 31 Jul 2011 10:24 a.m. PST |
So it looks like that within the current Heavy Gear 1/144th line there are larger and smaller gears, with the larger gears being close to the size of the larger MonPoc miniatures and a bit taller than some of the smaller MonPoc types. A good fit then. Another thought is how well some of the other miniatures from Privateer Press might stand along the MonPoc miniatures; as there are some fun ones within the various lines IMO.

I'm using the large and small humanoid Mollocks (subterrans)as a twisted super-science gone wrong type of army in 15mm. The smaller ones make huge brutes up against 15mm troops. The larger ones make REALLY huge horrors. I field them with some hazmat suit soldiers from Khurasan miniatures to simulate a violent criminal science terrorism organization like Marvel's AIM who are making and semi-controlling the monsters. I also have some (triton)sub hunters, and some (martian)despoilers used as combat robots, and a (triton)spiral relay used as a supervisor robot in that mess. And a plastic flying saucer model that acts as their mobile base. Since the larger figures are "doubled" with their amped up clear versions, I also use them as Nazi atrocity super soldiers in WWW2 games. I also have some of the smaller Apes, such as stealth ape, jetpack ape, command ape, howitzer ape, and rocket launcher ape who form
.the Ape team. Scipio (Hannibal) is the Command Ape. The stealth ape is Romeo (Face), the flying Ape is Head-case (Howling Mad Murdock), and the howitzer Ape or Rocket launcher ape alternate as DB Barrango (B. A. Barracus). I might find some excuse to buy a General Hondo and use him as their secret weapon Jolly (the giant)Green. Anyway I picture them as a mercenary attachment who can do crazy stupid things on the battle field and act almost like magic buff/nerf/damage spells did in old editions of Warhammer with a spell point system that lets them pull of crazy stunts up to once per game. (Stuff like " I love it when a scheme finally kicks in! " : Scipio throws a hand grenade, and up to three vehicles under the template must roll to not flip over. Any others must roll not to be redirected d4 inches in random diections. |
