I'd like to see how other toy soldier collectors game with their collections. What rules do you use? favorite brands? painted or unpainted? Thanks |

I use painted Armies in Plastic using the "toy soldier" painting style and gloss varnish. I use a set of homebrew rules. |

This blog features work supporting "Funny Little Wars"; he's on sabbatical for the summer but his site history is full of good ideas. link |

I am thinking of using the Operation Squad rules with 54mm WW2 Americans from Conte, Germans from TSSD and British from the Weston Toy Co. For scenery I will use my old Airfix strongpoint with some newer BMC items. The rules are apparently for squad size actions so it should be up and running soon. |

I game with 54mm Army Men figures, painted, using rules I wrote. Buildings are made of cardboard boxes cut to ruins, with doors and windows, as well as partial second and third floors. It's fun to play out large scale games, as my rules are bloody, and fairly quick. Great fun for me, and my (now grown) sons. Cheers! |

We had a toy soldier wargame in the garden this afternoon – great fun. Have a look at my blog, I'm using Armies In Plastic and HaT soldiers and some simple made up rules. link |

Thanks all, been checking out the links. I'm still trying to convince my buddies to try out a new scale so I'll probably be investing in a matched pair of toy soldier sets. |

Lions Den, hope you don't mind a suggestion
Your 54mm figures are nice, but if you applied a coat of Future/Klear Floor Polish, straight first, followed 15 minutes later, by a second coat of Future + Black Acrylic paint, mixed to make a black wash, your figures would really pop. If you've never done this before, try it with a sample figure. Once the second coat is dried (15 minutes after application), hit it with a matte clear coat. The first application of pure, full-strength, Future/Klear, will seal the rough surface of the paints, so that the second black wash coat will only collect in the folds, creating a really nice shadow effect. If you adopt this technique, come back and let us know so we can see the results. Cheers! |

I game exclusively in 54mm. I started into wargaming again while teaching history in high school and developed a set of games which are now available through wargamevault.com. By the Left Flank! What is so great about 54mm wargaming, especially for some individuals like me is that I can see them clearly. They are also easier to handle. Painted or unpainted, the 54mm are a scale which lends itself to both battalion and skirmishing rules. |

I just started plans for gaming in 54mm. I'll be calling it the "54mm Project" -- yeah, I know its a brilliant name:) Stuff'll be documented at my blog. Check out the first few figures. and keep those links to other 54mm stuff coming. I cant seem to get enough of the way some people game with 54s, amazingly fun! link |

I use the Britains Civil War figures – plastic on metal bases – in my Civil War games. I really like their cavalry figures. 54mm gaming can take up a lot of room, depending on how big you want the game to be. My brother and I did a 54mm Alamo game with a boatlaod of figures. Lots of fun and loaded with the fog of war. Too many Mexicans – too many Mexicans. |

I game with John Jenkins FIW figures. Yes, a little expensive but rather than sitting in my glass cabinet I actually play with my toys. I use ironical This Very Ground Rules and play on my dining room table, so I get a very game concluded easily within an afternoon. Other advantages no painting or waiting, and pleasing on the eye. Disadvantage COST! |
