Thinking about running a couple of warbands for Song of Arthur and Merlin (a SBH game by Ganesha Games). What figures in 15 or 10mm would people suggest? I'm looking for quality of sculpt over price.

Cheers,

it depends on your view of 'when' Arthur was.

was he high fantasy and plate mail knights in armour on barded horses?
or was he romano- british and mostly facing saxons on foot?

15 mm,

Splintered Light do a terrific Romano-British range, and the personalities match up pretty well, I think

Agreed on Splintered Light in 15mm. Also recommend looking at the new Donnington figures although they are not quite so early in period. Can't help with 10mm.
Song of Arthur and Merlin covers Arthur as a plate armour game, fighting the Saxons and also some kind of Welsh folk lore hero. Three games in one but I'm guessing the OP is wanting historical as this is in the Ancients message boards.

Agreed yet again on Splintered Light. When I first saw the sculpts on-line I thought they were 28mm! Just so much detail in the figs. Check them out:

Splintered Light also has ranges for the English, Picts, and Scots.

Another nice thing about Splintered Light is that their miniatures are have the spears cast on to the figures. That is one thing that turned me off to Outpost! Outpost figures were constantly losing their spears no matter what brand of super glue I was using. The Splintered Light's figure only have to have their shields glued on.

Finally, you get them at such a good price: roughly $.53 USD a casting for foot and $1.07 USD mounted.

One more vote for Splintered Light. The personalities packs are perfect for SAM – especially the Britons and Saxons.

I usually game in 28mm ancient dark age, but those Splintered light figures are very nice!

What points values are people using for Song of Arthur And Merlin? 300 is the SBH normal but are you playing bigger historical battles? I think there are also scenarios for 500 points warbands in the book which seems more relevant for historical battles.

Another vote for Splintered Light, especially the Wolftail Warriors! Old Glory 15mm
also has a nice line of minis for Dark Age Arthurians.

In 10mm have a look at the Pendraken late Romans

I've got an army of these figures, but don't have many painted yet, but they are very nice.

15mm Splintered Light all the way, 10mm Magister Militum do a nice range of 'Dark Age' figures but the pack sizes are rather large – 30foot.
I have some Saxons and they are nice sculpts, i keep meaning to rebase them for SoA.

Wow, thanks for those recomendations.Yes, for me Arthur dies c. AD 518, so 'Arthurian' is Romano-Brits vs. Saxons, Picts and Irish.

Splintered Light certainly seems to be the peoples favourite for 15mm.

Cheers

10 mm Pendraken's Late Roman sculpted by Clibinarium are top quality figures.

Doc here: Ought to mention that Rodrick Campbell is the sculptor for the SL historicals, and the Romano-Brits won an award at Origins a couple of years ago, best new mini line.

The Outpost are indeed lovely, and the examples shown are excellently painted.

If you check the SL website for SAM, don't overlook the Archer collection, which includes Beowulf and Grendal, and maybe some other figs useful for that period. Also the Robin Hood line , though a few centuries earlier, has civilians and such.

Any recommendations for 10mm opponents, Saxons, Picts or Irish?

HarryHotspurEsq14 Apr 2012 9:01 p.m. PST

If anyone is interested, I've embarked on this project now, defaulting to 10mm Pendraken Romans and Magister Militum Saxons and Irish. I will keep the blog updated as I progress.
