I'm reading the books right now in anticipation. Just finished Princess of Mars the other night and started on Gods of Mars.

tberry740314 Jul 2011 11:56 a.m. PST

If you loved the books don't watch the movie. The movie seems to have the same relevance to the book that "Starship Trooper" the movie did to that book. "The names are the same, the story has been changed cause we're better writers than ERB."

1) It looks like he is being chased across the plains on Earth by Confederates not the Apaches (after he rescues the body of his friend Powell after the Apaches tortured him to death – not PC).

2) He wakes up on Mars fully clothed.

3) The giant green Martians (15 feet tall) didn't look very giant.

That being said, I probably will go to see it when it comes out. I just have to remember to "leave the book at home".

Mick A14 Jul 2011 11:59 a.m. PST

I reserve judgement until I see decent footage of the green Martians…

Okay, blue skies on Mars?

I have high hopes for this, but I didn't find the planet alien enough in the exterior shots— too much American Southwest— made even worse by the fact that there are scenes in the American Southwest. Simply tinting the skies would have been enough. But then, given that the title is just John Carter, with no reference to Mars, maybe they've decided Barsoom is in a different solar system altogether and is not really our Mars.

I like certain aspects, but that trailer is a little too formulaic for me at this point. I'll withhold judgment.

I like the flying ships, though.

Schogun14 Jul 2011 12:15 p.m. PST

Tars Tarkas is too skinny.

But…I'll watch it. Great books growing up.

Parmenion14 Jul 2011 12:34 p.m. PST
CPBelt14 Jul 2011 12:45 p.m. PST

Meh. Looks like all the other 'video game' movies out there.

Sloppypainter14 Jul 2011 12:52 p.m. PST

I agree the Mars in the trailer didn't look very…Martian. I'm interested but skeptical.

Farstar14 Jul 2011 1:37 p.m. PST

I saw the alien plants and wondered "which Mars is this again? I signed up for Burroughs, not Wells."

The use of tatoos instead of straight red skin is interesting as well.

I can handle blue sky, since the air plant keeps the planet breathable. I am a little puzzled by the feathered airships. Despite the art of Frazetta and Whelan, I don't recall anything on Barsoom being described as feathered…

As for the title, they may be trying to reduce confusion. The logo does have an "M" in it, so the "of Mars" is certainly implied. Sadly, the Tracy Lords thing of 2009 may have interfered with this movie at the marketing level, having stolen the name (of the first book) and botched the job.

nazrat14 Jul 2011 3:00 p.m. PST

Looks great to me! It's possible that this teaser may not contain all the finished special effects, but who knows?

"If you loved the books don't watch the movie. The movie seems to have the same relevance to the book that "Starship Trooper" the movie did to that book."

I grew up reading the novels and all that matters to me is that they get the "feel" of John Carter of Mars right. I have re-read the first few not that long ago and the simple fact is that they were not that well written and the plots were as thin as Martian air. I have no doubt at all that Pixar has writers who will actually do a better job than Burroughs and who are more up to the task of making a solid, enduring, and most importantly entertaining film.

altfritz14 Jul 2011 3:03 p.m. PST

Lets hope they expand the teaser into a full length movie like they did with Iron Man.

Farstar14 Jul 2011 3:13 p.m. PST

Thin plots work well for movies, though. The soap operas we get in SF&F now are much better suited to TV series.

In the case of "A Princess of Mars", "Go to new world, get captured, meet girl that needs saving, and spend the rest of the book saving her" is good to go. The rest (gladiatorial combats, old loves, lost children, marriages of state, revolutions, marching armies, sacking of mighty cities, merging of empires, and the end of the world) is just filler.

Yes, that's all in one book. Not a thick book, either.

Bronze Age Miniatures have an excellent range of suitable figures.

doug redshirt14 Jul 2011 4:19 p.m. PST

I liked. I couldnt figure out why this movie looks like it is finished, but now I am wondering if they didnt need the extra time to do tinting of the sky and terrain. Though I think if I remember right that Mars only looks red from our view point. Pictures from the rovers look like they were taken on Earth.

Disney version?

I shudder at the thought of it.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP14 Jul 2011 6:36 p.m. PST

Our sky is blue because of nitrogen content, not oxygen. A breathable atmosphere could have much less nitrogen and still work fine for us. The nitrogen is just, well, air. Besides which, it's all one big fantasy, not "science" fiction. Give us reddish skies and don't worry about why they're red. (Heck, yellow, lavender or a dip into green would be okay. Anything to make them more "alien.")

But that's all still a minor quibble, and I won't judge the movie on it.

Alex Reed14 Jul 2011 6:48 p.m. PST

They left off "Warlord of"…

Parroom Station also has an extensive line of figures link

While Bronze Age has them beat where green men and red women are concerned, Parroom has the better mounts (under critters and monsters). The cephalids are a lot of fun too

tnjrp14 Jul 2011 10:45 p.m. PST

Doesn't look too bad (obviously not faithfull to the original to the last letter since the Mouse House isn't going to do a film with constant full frontal nudity) at this stage but obviously there's every chance it'll turn out to be a big pile of fumigating disney in the end.

May have to work out a couple of Defiance lists to completement the existing Martian ones to coindice with the release (-:)

Pijlie14 Jul 2011 11:09 p.m. PST

Dejah Thoris seems a bit overdressed, but that aside it look s promising.

tnjrp15 Jul 2011 3:15 a.m. PST

Oh, and on the subject on real Martian sky (and soil) colours…

If I was a FX guy at Pixar I might be tempted to tint the sky quite dark blue as Barsoom was dying, not yet dead (well, at least in the case lifeforms more or less like a human) world with its atmo thin but not quite gone yet.

Battle Works Studios15 Jul 2011 3:33 a.m. PST

Insufficiently naked, the feathery airships look wrong, the whole planet isn't red enough, and I worry about the "save the world" plotline (it was just an accidental closer point in the original, a way to get him back to Earth) – but still, hopeful. Pixar has a good record, and they've gotten the look right in most places. Do a little color correction and they fix a big chunk of the problem.

Oh but just think of the toys that will be released! thumbs up

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP15 Jul 2011 6:38 a.m. PST

Thanks for the Mars links, tnjrp.

I like the darker blue idea— that would be enough.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP15 Jul 2011 6:43 a.m. PST

Insufficiently naked,

It's a lot easier to write your lead female character as being naked from the waist up (and paint it on the book cover) than it is to actually try and film a whole movie that way. Our culture just isn't wired to accept the Minoan look as "normal." And no moms would let their sons see the movie. (And most wives wouldn't be happy about it either.)
So I'm fine with a little more coverage on the princess than ERB wrote. grin

CraigH15 Jul 2011 3:12 p.m. PST

Between copyright still being enforced on a book written in 1912 (by an author who's been dead for 61 years) and now Disney Corp getting involved – better stock up on your "not" figures now !

Farstar15 Jul 2011 3:34 p.m. PST

There will, on the other hand, be toys. Lots and lots of toys.

"Disney version?

'NOT Disney, but Disney's Pixar. Totally different animal without a doubt!'

I have to Nazrat here….as far as I am concerned Pixar has yet to make a bomb. I hope this isnt it, it is their first live action….but man…this looks great to me.

TredHedJon15 Jul 2011 5:16 p.m. PST

Ooops submitted too soon.

As for the nudity…well….a pg-13 movie will get a wider audience than an R. As long as they stay true to the spirit of the Barsoom books, I'm good.

darthfozzywig15 Jul 2011 8:24 p.m. PST

The movie seems to have the same relevance to the book that "Starship Trooper" the movie did to that book.

So…way better than the book? Sounds great!

justBill15 Jul 2011 9:55 p.m. PST

I think it looks pretty good. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
I am also just starting to re read the series. As an aside the books are just starting to be republished, which is long over due, but the cover art is pathetic. I love my set with the art by Michael Whelan.

commanderroj16 Jul 2011 3:56 a.m. PST

Feathry flyers aside, it looks like it will be well worth a trip to the cinema. But to paraphrase a friends curmudgeonly dad "Its not (quite)the John Carter I know!" Its the spirit of the age to pick up on the save the planet message and put it centre stage.

The Michael Whelan cover art was outstanding.

abdul666lw16 Jul 2011 5:39 a.m. PST

The movie seems to have the same relevance to the book that "Starship Trooper" the movie did to that book.

The movie was deliberately 'tongue in cheek', which was missed by many fans of the book.
Here on the opposite, I fear an 'all audience' syrup which would be to the books (and to many book covers illustrations -and some 'emphatically NOT Barsoom minis tinminis.com/TinManCatalog.htm ) what 'Willow' was to 'The Lord of the Rings', or the *2nd* 'all audiences' Conan movie was to Howard's writings.
