A number of the games Don and I have been playing of late are themed – facing our irrational fears – and this AAR is the latest. I truly expected to get my teeth kicked in with a 1,500 point Königstiger list against a Soviet Strelkovy "infantry horde" list. (Note that Don did not go heavy in artillery and he hates air support
but that may change.) link The next game like this I want to go against 'zook-heavy US Rifles (or Armored Rifles) and see how the KTs fare. I know the US can go air and artillery-heavy and kick my butt, but I would like to see how a "normal", all-comers list would do against the KT list. Dale |

Couple of points Soviet flamethrowers have 4 shots even when moving and as LW Soviets are trained they hasve a 50% chance of hitting and autobailing your KT's per shot so your opponent should have taken 4 of these instead of HMG Also he was handicapping himself against any armoured list by not taking the HQ sappers which are genrallly considered a 'no brainer' With the artillery all he needs to do is bail you as his strelk assault. I woukld still fear the strelk if I were you :) |

I fear the Strelkovy as an "artillery and air delivery platform", yes, but there is nothing inherent about a horde of TA 2 infantry to fear when you have King Tigers. They just have no means to do anything to the KTs sitting on an objective, other than die. (Reminds me of the scene in Hellboy II where HB fights the 'Tooth Fairies'.) Something else has to be present to make them useful. (Like something forcing them to bail.) Good you mentioned the flame-throwing tanks. Don had mused about that at the end of the game, but I forgot to write it up in the analysis. |

Further to my previois post Soviet INFANTRY flamethrowers have a ROF of 4 Soviet sappers have a tank assault value (TA) of 4 |

Ah, I get you. When I say "inherent", I literally meant "in the Company" (platoon). As compared with, say US Rifles with their Bazookas in the platoon (not combat attached). So Soviets have better flamethrowers than that listed on page 66 of the mini rulebook, eh? I thought '2' was a little low. Thanks for that. I should have double-checked, but did not have a book (other than the rules) handy at the time. Dale |

Yup they have 4 flamers per base too – its in all the arsnals, the free know your enemy pdfs and in Das Book. No 'real' stats in the main rule book. Yes Soviet weapons apart from light mortars and the odd HMG are genrally held at battalion level and then distributed as required. Try the Assault Engineers-Sapper list from River of Heroes against your KT's next time for a more historical challenge |

Wait, in FoW, infantry can't actually knock out a tank in close assault? That's
just
.stupid. |

Tank yes – King Tiger not so easy |

Interesting game – while I have a couple of King Tigers I have never used them, so some inspiration to dig them out of storage! |

Thanks. I suggest you read the Tactica Königstiger thread of the FOW forum (the link is in my blog), written by Darkhorse. It is an excellent place to start for how to deal with the unique problems of a Königstiger company (like the fact that the basic force of HQ + 2 platoons costs 1040 points). It was that thread that got me interested. Before that I played, at most, a single Tiger on the table. Otherwise it was Panzer IV or StuG G. With so few units (and still learning the capabilities), it makes for a tense game. Dale |

@Truscott: It doesn't matter if it's a KoingsTiger or a frigging Matilda I: Drop a grenade into the treads and it's ed. |

The more I read people posting about how "easy" it is for infantry to take out tanks in close assaults in real life, the more I become convinced those same authors have absolutely no real life combat experience. |

I'm sure there are ways to disable a large tank I have a preference for air support, but in a pinch a satchel charge in the tracks will immobilize one and a Molotov to the engine will start a nice fire (effective for older tanks, not so much on new ones). |

I have a preference for laser-guided ATGM's, but I'll settle for 155mm arty rounds landing on top of the turret..:) |
