I have Military Dress of the Peninsula War by Windrow and Embleton, but am keen to get some other sources regarding what troops (especially French) wore in the field, in Spain. Cheers, Simon |

Haythornthwaite's "Uniforms of the Peninsular War". Contains some 'local uniform variations'. Long OOP, and it would hardly be my only reference, but it's worth having. Copies come around on eBay and Amazon |

Osprey did a book on uniforms of the Peninsular War (the picture plates might be the same ones in the Haythornthwaite book). In general, the basic French uniform is the same as those worn at Wagram in 1809 (long tailed coat with shako). The uniform get some modification in Spain from daily wear and tear. You could start adding some figures with brown trousers, some in great coats, most in shako covers. Add some knee and elbow patches in various colors. If the figure does not have "campaign look detail" then paint them on yourself: for a patch, paint a black square on the elbow or knee then paint a brown, green, blue or whatever bit of "cloth" atop the black to make it stand out. You could add little cross hatches around the perimeter of the patch to represent sewing tread. Or paint a black spot at elbow or knee and then dab a bit of flesh atop the black. Now it looks like a hole in the uniform with some of the skin showing through. You could also try some lighter blue tones to represent sun fading of the uniform. |

Plus I'd highly recommend: "Napoleon's War in Spain" by Lachoque,Tranie & Carmigniani. ISBN 0-85368-506-1 Arms & Armour Press I think you'd be looking for a 2nd hand copy – lots of info, colour plates and maps |

Those are the two I was going to recommend. You can land "Uniforms of the Peninsular War" for under $15 USD on abebooks and they've got a copy of "Napoleon's War in Spain" for under $10!!! Several for under $25 USD including shipping. |

Los franceses y sus aliados en España 1808-1814 and Uniformes españoles de la Guerra de Independencia by José María Bueno are two good books from Spain. |
