First of all, what is a "rap"?

Second of all, if you would like help, a comprehensible request would be nice.

Punctuation would be an added bonus.

Only Warlock03 Jun 2004 4:39 p.m. PST

Yikes. That sounded harsher than I intended.

Devil Dice03 Jun 2004 4:48 p.m. PST

Only Warlock .

I believe the young gentleman is requesting our assistance into the method of producing an ode to his hero ,in something akin to iambic pentameter ..only faster.

Glad to be of assistance in this matter . etcetera etcetera..

Durin' de War uh 1812, Tecumseh and his remainin' followers allied demselves wid de British. Lop some boogie. Tecumseh hoped dat, if de English won, dat dey would return de Indians' cribland t'dem. WORD!

De war ended essentially in some draw, so cut me some slack, Jack. Tecumseh got wasted at one uh de most impo'tant battles uh de conflict, de Battle uh de Dames, in 1813. A combined English-Indian fo'ce met an American army led by William Henry Harrison. 'S coo', bro.

De British soldiers ran fum de battlefield, leavin' Tecumseh and his Indian followers t'continue on deir own. 'S coo', bro. De Americans drove da damn natives fum de field, but an American's bullet felled da damn Indian leader. Ah be baaad...

Tecumseh's dead signified da damn end uh united Indian resistance against da damn Americans. Tecumseh's dream uh a united Indian front got wasted wid him. WORD!

Chillin', de Gorb

Well, John Myers Myers (in SILVERLOCK) has a bard at Heriot doing "The Death of Bowie Gizzardsbane" in Anglo-Saxon heroic style:

Harsh that hearing for Houston the Raven:
Foes had enfeebled the fortress at Bexar,
Leaving it lacking and looted the while
Hordes were sweeping swift on his land . . .

So there's no insurmountable obstacle, it seems to me, to doing a rap on Tecumseh. And I also would like to see the results.

doc mcb03 Jun 2004 6:04 p.m. PST

Didn't William Henry Harrison have a song (when he ran for president 30 years later!) along the lines of "tempsey, tumpsey, I shot Tecumsey" or words to that effect? maybe that belongs in the rap.

Nothing to see here, move along.

I guess this just made me feel really old. When I was in 7th grade, Tom Jones won the Grammy for Best New Artist. For my history project, I went to the city library in Portland, found a book on English castles, and scratchbuilt a model of Stokesay ( actually a fortified manor house ) . O tempores, o mores.

Even so, I do see the virtue in Bowie Gizzardsbane:

Another thing of interest was Tecumseh's friendship/alliance with Gen. Sir Isaac Brock. As a token, Tecumseh gave Brock a "magic" sash that would make all bullets miss the wearer. At the battle of Queenston's Heights, Brock had forgotten to wear the sash, and got shot in the heart. The sash, as well as Gen. Brock's coat, are displayed at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

I recall writing a bit of doggerel on the French Invasion of Jersey in 1781 for my English class . I don't remember much else , but I still have all the salient facts of the battle in my head 35 years later.

If rap is what it takes for kids to learn history , so be it.

Now what rhymes with Tecumseh ?....

rmaker04 Jun 2004 7:25 a.m. PST

doc mcb - no. It was some Kentucky militia colonel. Harrison's campaign song was "Hero of Tippecanoe", set to the tune of "Rosin le Beau":

They say he lives in a cabin,

And drinks his own whiskey, too.

Well, I say to you, what of that?

He's the hero of Tippecanoe.
