Marc33594 had these great burning vehicle markers at Recon 2011. He told me what he used and I gave it a whirl.

I also bought some doormats and did a little trimming and drybrushing.

Nice. What's that then – a set of flicker LEDs?

Yes

Hello Knight,

Very cool. Can you provide some details on how you made this marker? What is the smoke around the LED?

I can think of a number of my games in which this would be very useful.

I picked up some fake tea lights at michaels that I plan to do something similar with. Spray batting with red then blacka nd stuff it around the flickering tealight

Marc33594 gets all the credit for finding the materials. He was using them in his great 15mm Rapid Fire games at Recon.

They come with batteries and they also sell replacement batteries cheap.

Ryan this is felt roving

I punched out a 1" fab foam disk.

I tore the felt roving in small strips blued it to the fab foam disk with cheap washable white glue. I alternated red and orange teasing it up.

I then glued a few strips of yellow pulling till it was thicker at the top of the red and orange but barely connected to the disk.

I left it alone to dry.

I then sprayed it with 99 cent gloss spray paint. I went light layering the paint. I was afraid of to heavy a coat.

I did a little gray highlights on the smoke.

I did paint the outer edge of the fab foam as fire.

I think the orange, red, and yellow roving enhances the LED color.

Thanks Knight, it looks like I'll have to put in an order for "Blinky Lights".

(Isn't it odd how my dear wife just dumbfoundedly shakes her head at this kind of stuff?)

VERY, VERY cool. I've always wanted to do something like this with burning houses for my Napoleonic games.

Thanks for the tips!

Very effective, and well worth the effort.

How about a burning hippo for your colonial/pulp games?
