Hi,

can anyone give me any info about the Whipping Bobby Lee ruleset? I've got Fire and Fury, and JRIII but have been playing Black Powder.

are the Whipping Bobby Lee rules worth buying?

definitely worth it. They're my favourite rule set for ACW.
You have a limited number of cards for controlling units, each with a different value and generals with varying command levels.

Sometimes you have too few actions and at others you can find you have too many command points and not enough units to use them on,

I've liked playing them but then I knew nothing about the ACW when I started using them and had few preconceptions. There are times when you have a 'hmmmm' moment about some things that happen but I don't suppose it is any more than most rules.
In a nutshell:
Units represent a brigade and are a number of bases, from 3 to 8. The number of hits you take varies according to the number of bases, so it takes more hits to take off the first base from an 8 base unit than it does from a 5 base unit.
Different quality units get to change formation more or less quickly, get a higher or lower to hit roll and more or less dice for passing morale checks.
One thing which generally works well (though doesn't have to be used) is that you pick your main force and then three sets of reinforcements. You draw a card which tells you how much of this you get to use, whether any reinforcements are deployed initially or when you get to start rolling for them. It also gives your break point and any victory point modifiers, so a small army which hold out for a long enough time against a large army can win even if forced from the field.
The command points are chosen to last four turns, so you have to look some time ahead. With an normal commander you have one occasion when you can choose 12 points, 3 times for 8 points and the rest of the time you only get 4 points. Points are spent for moving and changing formation (though some moves are free), rallying and causing artillery to change targets. You can see that 4 points won't go far, so you have to consider your options wisely.

We generally use the rules for games with perhaps a dozen or fewer units on each side. However, it has played well enough for multi-player versions of Gettysburg and Stones River. Antietam was supposed to be multi-player but in the end was fought by just two of us and was very manageable.
Each game flowed well and either went historically or diverted in a reasonable way.

It was actually a bit of a mix of two days of action – otherwise you get some players doing relatively little! Stones River and Antietam were closer to actual events.

Agree with Swapster, WhiBL are a very good set of rules, so its worth taking the time to understand the slightly convoluted orders per turn/bound system.

Plus they have some nifty dice mechanics like 'best of 3 dice' of 'worst of two' etc.

I'm planning to use them for my 6mm ACW, but did a lot of 28mm gaming with them in the dim and distant 90s. A base is a base so I don't think it really matters how many of which scale figures you have on it.
