Hundvig Fezian is not a real big fan of pre-painted minis, and he positively despises randomly-packed "collectable" ones - so why is he writing this article?

Imagine that you want to take the scenarios from Mark H. Walker's World at War series and play them as miniatures games. The game is set during a 'what-if' Cold War invasion of Europe, set in 1983. Counters represent individual platoons of infantry or armor; a turn represents 5-15 minutes, and let's say the map is roughly 4,000 meters deep.

Which miniatures ruleset would you use?

Cold War Commander.

World at War. There is a nice miniature conversion in the compendium. and it 1985 not 1983.

Yep, World at War makes a great minis game. I have found Blood & Bridges an excellent entry point, followed by Eisenbach Gap. Be odd use something else.

By the shrug, I assume you have never played the games, K?

He's just keeping his post count up but his character count down.

I would probably use Cold War Commander, but that's because I have it here.

Grizzlymc20 Jun 2011 4:15 p.m. PST

He's good at that, but generally more agreeable.

What scale would you prefer, kyoteblue? I rather like 15mm myself for modern(ish) now. I blame Ambush Alley Games for that.

Combined Arms/Command Decision

Does the latest edition cover anything post WWII?

I thought Frank considered the original Combined Arms to be fatally flawed in some way…

I didn't know Cold War Commander is out of print… And the Lulu version is kind of lame (no pictures). No PDF available?

Another vote for FFoT.

I would simply use the World at War boardgame rules as is…and play the game with micro armor on 4" GHQ Terrain Maker hexes. In fact, I already ran a game for my club using these rules. I created a scenario for the Iran-Iraq war and it played very well using the World at War rules.

I am building forces for the WAW rules. The article in the Compendium is a great intro to convert the game into miniatures. I think thye do it in 1/600 scale, but at 5o+ I am lucky to see micro armor. I will post soem pics when I am through.
