I have just started a new blog as I begin painting the excellent Peter Pig figures for this new project. I plan to add at least one completed unit each week. I am still setting up the blog with links etc, but have now uploaded pics of my first unit of British foot.I hope to get to know some of you here as things develop.

Here's the link, should anyone care to take a look in the meantime.

nice work old chap…its a period that I've thought about dabbling in as well but was considering 10mm.
I've thought about starting this blog thing; can I ask how difficult or easy it was to start one?

cheers
jon.

morrigan12 Jun 2011 4:32 a.m. PST

Very nicely done!

Sean Clark12 Jun 2011 11:59 a.m. PST

Excellent. I will follow closely. I am nearing the end of the first stage of my own PP AWI collection. Fat Wallys site is a real inspiration.

I actually bought and painted my first units when the figures were first released so some early units lack the diversity you can now achieve by using various packs mixed together. My later units are much more ragged and campaign looking!

They are excellent figures. At Salute Martin said he intends to take the range upto 100 packs so expect some French at some point as well as more cavalry types.

Dale Hurtt12 Jun 2011 4:10 p.m. PST

I've added you to my blog list. Always good to see more people getting into the American Revolution!

Lee Gramson13 Jun 2011 1:47 a.m. PST

Thank you for the comments, I find that having a few people following a blog can help drive a project along. I'll be painting a least one fresh unit per week and adding it to the blog, and hopefully learning much from this forum along the way.

Jon, using 'blogger' is remarkably easy and adds an extra dimension to the hobby I find, that of being able to share with like minded people.

Holden,I love the 'FatWally' AWI pages, having spent ages staring closely at those images I decided to abandon my ACW project in order to do this. The PP figures are the best 15mm figures I have seen in many years of painting figures.

Captain dEwell13 Jun 2011 2:32 p.m. PST

Congratulations, well done. Another example of how a skilled painter and a fine quality product combine to produce a truly high grade wargame army.

I shall follow your blog with much interest.

Adam D13 Jun 2011 6:06 p.m. PST

Lee:

Your 10th Foot looks great, and I look forward to seeing your future units, too. I am now following your blog (as "AD").

Lee Gramson14 Jun 2011 2:04 a.m. PST

Thanks once again folks.

Adam D, I have added your blog to my list too, looks like a wealth of information for a relative newcomer to the period such as myself.

Just updated my blog, and I am researching Continental infantry uniforms as I want to get it right!

Lee Gramson21 Jun 2011 1:01 a.m. PST

Just added more pics of a new Continental regiment to my blog. Also a British command stand. Thought I would post a link to the command stand pic here.15mm Peter Pig figures.

New units added to my blog, link at top of this thread should anyone care to look.

Continental infantry in mix of uniform coats and hunting shirts, advancing/charging. All figures by Peter Pig, and Martin at PP has kindly placed a link to the blog at the top of the 'Washington's Army' range on the PP website.

Cheers guys. I just painted more British line and a couple of guns.

Gen Phred23 Jul 2011 2:30 a.m. PST

Very nice work. Excellent painting and basing. Following too.

Lee Gramson25 Jul 2011 5:57 a.m. PST

Thank you very much.

Couldn't resist painting a quick American command stand! I like the 'Liberty' flag so added it. As you can see it has been on the receiving end of British musketry. A few needle burn holes for effect.

pilum4001 Aug 2011 5:31 p.m. PST

Nicely done! My AWI collection is in 54mm from All the King's Men.

Lee Gramson02 Aug 2011 6:07 a.m. PST

Thank you pilum40. I bet AWI in 54mm must look stunning! Do you have a link I can follow please?

Just updated my blog again, I'm painting fast & furious now, turning out 2 x 20 figure battalions per week so that I can get to the gaming stage ASAP. Just completed the Queens Rangers and added some pics of terrain items I have made.

I'd appreciate any feedback on the Rangers please as I am not certain the uniform is totally correct although it will do in 15mm hopefully.

Cheers.
Lee.

Added some light infantry and riflemen to my blog today. These are skirmisher stands and based on double width bases with corners rounded off. All figures by Peter Pig and painted by myself. Blog link is at the top of this thread should anyone wish to see more!

Lee,

Don't update this topic page each time start a new one when you have more photos. I am concerned that many other gamers who would enjoy your work won't notice this old topic page.

Step into the limelight each time – you have a rare talent for great figure painting.

I enjoy your work immensely.

As aye,

D'Ewell

Lee Gramson12 Aug 2011 6:34 a.m. PST

D'Ewell,

Thank you Sir :-) To be honest I was not sure if I should post a link to my blog here at all, but I'm glad some are enjoying it. I will take your advice.

Rafa, thank you. I've been painting figures for 30 years or so now and actually got tired of it, but after a break the AWI has really taken hold of me and inspired my painting again.

Regards,
Lee.

Lee Gramson18 Aug 2011 1:33 p.m. PST

New British Guards battalion just added to my blog …… for those who enjoy looking at pics of painted figures (as I do!).
Link at top of page.

Peter Pig 'Washington's Army' range, painted by myself :-)

I don't mean to be pedantic, but the Guards Brigade did not carry colours into the field during the AWI. They were detachments from all of the Guard regiments rather than whole battalions and thus, no colours.

That said, you have painted some nice looking figures. I like the basing too. Keep churning them out thumbs up

Lee Gramson18 Aug 2011 11:05 p.m. PST

Thank you Sir :-) that is noted and will be duly corrected. I recall now that I had even read it myself! I always welcome constructive comments like that, I am relatively new to the period. I'll use the 2 colour bearers elsewhere.

Regards,

Lee.

Oh Bugger23 Aug 2011 2:47 a.m. PST

Nice work Lee.

Lee Gramson25 Aug 2011 1:51 a.m. PST

Thank you 'Oh Bleeped text' :-)

As this thread has now built up a nice collection of photos of my growing AWI collection I may as well keep it going I think.

Just updated with this new Militia battalion plus the Rifle battalion that has been re based and 8 new figure added to bring them up to 20 figures. I have been re-thinking how my light troops have been based and have reworked them, I explain why in the new blog post (link at top), but I think that the previous bases would not have given sufficient flexibility in order to reflect the role of 'lights' during the AWI. Feedback always welcome.

All figures 15mm Peter Pig from the 'Washington's Army' range and painted by myself.

Terrific work, Lee. It all gets better and better.

Lee Gramson30 Aug 2011 12:48 p.m. PST

This period is inspiring me, just so many uniforms to paint! But I'm also getting deeper into the period history and starting to learn so much more, fascinating and moving. Thanks again D'Ewell :-)

Well, just finished a battalion of Scots I've been putting off for a while, challenging to paint but not turned out too bad I think.

All figures 15mm 'Peter Pig' as usual.

Lee Gramson03 Sep 2011 6:38 a.m. PST

I corrected my error made in including 2 colour bearers in my converged British Guards unit ….. I added an extra stand as I had bought a pack of 8 figures and repainted the drummers reverse colours out ('Royal' unit).

I think I'm sort of indulging myself in this thread :-)but I hope those who enjoy browsing collections of painted figures (as I do) will enjoy it too!

Captain dEwell04 Sep 2011 3:13 a.m. PST

And so, too battle.

I'd love to fight the good fight with these figures of yours.

Keep it going. Superb.

As aye,

D'Ewell

Lee Gramson10 Sep 2011 5:35 a.m. PST

Cheers D'Ewell :-) I am getting close to my first encounter now, but I need to get some more Continentals painted to counter those bristling British bayonets!

I just updated again with some tabletop shots, an excuse to take lots of photos but unfortunately I struggled with lighting.Still, should anyone care to look the link is at the top of the thread.

Heres a couple of shots, the small 'stone' markers are for 'Loose Files & American Scramble' 'D' point markers. All figures by Peter Pig of course, painted by myself.

Great work, Lee, and I must say that I am also hugely impressed with your tabletop battlefield, fields, crops and orchards. Precisely what I am looking to do.

Oh, and some nifty pictures taken as well. Your blogpage top picture reminds me of the landscape for the Battle of Spencer's Ordinary, May 1781 . . . I'm gonna do it!

As aye,

D'Ewell

Oh Bugger10 Sep 2011 1:52 p.m. PST

Yep an excellent battle field too.

I hope to finish my own AWI armies in the next fortnight circ's permitting.

Lee Gramson11 Sep 2011 7:02 a.m. PST

Think I sharpened up my photography skills finally….these are better than the overlit or underlit pics I posted before hopefully. I'm starting to get the hang of it. I do love painting figures, but I struggle to find the inspiration to wargame with them and I'm just hitting that point with this project again now. Problem for me is that I never enjoyed any set of rules more than the original Fire & Fury set, despite their faults I loved 'em because they were so damn playable and a game could be played almost on impulse and be fought to a conclusion in a couple of hours.

Cyrus the Great13 Sep 2011 8:11 p.m. PST

Would you care to share your painting technique for turning out such wonderful figures so quickly?

Lee Gramson16 Sep 2011 5:38 a.m. PST

Hi 'Cyrus',

I'll do a stage by stage painting method post on my blog with pictures. The method is actually quite fast and easy to do, speed and accuracy are the key, but the final stage is always to go back and retouch/correct any errors once a unit is 'finished'. I have some Continental line undercoated ready to go so I'll use them for the tutorial.

Lee.

Cyrus the Great16 Sep 2011 7:05 p.m. PST

Thanks Lee. I'm looking forward to it!

Lee Gramson01 Oct 2011 4:07 a.m. PST

Been a while since I added a new pic to this thread so here are the British Grenadiers, converged companies from various Regiments, the latest update to my blog.

16th Light Dragoons added to the blog today. 15mm Peter Pig figures painted by myself. Around the 400 figures painted mark now so not much more to go. I'll finish this thread as it has a nice collection of pics and hopefully might encourage others to try this period fascinating period.

Lee Gramson20 Oct 2011 7:48 a.m. PST

And now American Dragoons added to my blog. Unit is generic and flag will be replaced with a more accurate one. 2 recently painted Militia light guns can be seen behind them.

Love the look of your armies! Very nice paint jobs, and basing is super as well.

I like nearly all of the PP figures, but the cannon don't sit well with me. The wheels are entirely too wide – twice as thick as they should be. Did you think that too?

Lee Gramson20 Oct 2011 11:47 p.m. PST

Hi firstvarty, thanks for the comments. Re the PP guns, I do agree with you, but I think its a very common problem and not only in 15mm. Last year when I was painting 28mm Napoleonics I posted about this very issue (link below). The Front Rank guns had wheels twice as thick as the Victrix plastic guns, the latter looked very frail, but research into period carriage plans proved that the Victrix models were far closer to true scale than the FR versions, which are kind of akin to the PP gun wheels! So yes, I agree with you, the wheels are far too thick, but like most PP figures are designed to be sturdy.

Cheers,
Lee.

Lee – I can't leave comments on blogger for some bizarre reason, but wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your blog. I'm amazed at how much detail you paint on these 15mm figures – very inspirational!

Thank you Giles.
