What is the scale of Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings figures. I realize they are not the same proportion as their other lines but what scale are 25mm or 28mm? |
Little Big Wars | 11 Jun 2011 10:11 p.m. PST |
Something between Heroic 25mm and True 28mm I think. Definitely smaller in scale as compared to GW's Heroic 28mm offerings. |

True 28mm. If you compare them to the usual fare, they are not shorter but much more slender and proportionate. Now, most of the miniatures that advertise as 28mm are really 30mm or more

your being too generous Beowulf, most figures called heroic 28mm are 34-36mm. |

There's quite a bit of scale variation within the range as well. Early LotR minis like the Warriors and Riders of Rohan are "true" 28mm. Metal figures from the same era are generally taller (OK, not the hobbits or dwarfs). Later plastics like the Army of the Dead just tower over them – a full head taller (33-35mm) and much chunkier too. |

Like Tanuki has said the early miniatures are mostly true 28mm which means they are about 28mm tall but much skinnier than what you would see from Warhammer miniatures. In the last two or three years specifically the range has moved towards the bulkier heroic scale to a certain degree. Especially the plastic wood elves. |

Faramir's Rangers (in metal) were huge compared to the humans around them. Better fighters, I suppose. |

Within the range there is variation. The original plastic 1st Age Gondor troops are smaller than the 3rd Age troops. |

I thought they were 25mm – certainly smaller than the rest of the GW ranges. And the goblins make great 20mm orcs. |

I love Scale threads with such definitive answers. |

It's hard to be exact – 'cos really how big are 28mm figures ? 27mm ? 28mm? 29mm? And with the caricature sculpting what does it really mean. The GW figures were advertised originally as being 25mm – I always assummed this was done to make them a bit smaller and less easy to use with other "LOTR type" fantasy ranges. |

They're definitely a 'true' scale, as opposed to heroic. They are much skinnier, and their hands are proportional. I think you can call them '28mm', since the LotR minis seem to look like the Perry brothers other 28mm ranges from their personal ranges. |

@Lion in the Stars: So they are in scale with Perry miniatures 28mm offering? |
RobH | 13 Jun 2011 10:21 a.m. PST |
Anything quoted in "mm" is a size NOT a scale. A scale can only be expressed as a relationship. As for the LotR range, not many of the actors have publicly listed heights, but Orlando Bloom was quoted as being measured for an offical waxwork model at 179.5cms. So his GW representation (most vertical pose) is 29.3mm to top of the head (none of this "to the eye" crap). 29.3mm in relation to 1795mm is 1:61.26 So 1/60th is the nearest recognised scale. |

The ones I had matched up very nicely with my Artizan and Crusader dark ages figures, if that helps any. |

But was Legolas the same height as Orlando Bloom ? In real life the actors who played the hobbits aren't that short. |

Wastelander, I will let you know as soon as I get some Perry minis to compare them to. I'm waiting for a Warstore order to arrive, it may take a week or two. I regularly poach parts from LOTR minis to replace lost hands or arms for infinity minis. @20thMaine: Gimli and the Hobbits were CG-shrunk in post-production, but there should be a height-comparison chart somewhere. John Rhys-Davies is something like 6'2", but Gimli is all of maybe 4 foot 8 tall (and wide). |

Withing the range there should be quite a variance, weren't pure blooded folks of Numenor supposed to be like 7 feet tall? |
