yes, "best" is completely open to interpretaion and subjective, but deal with it and make a choice ;-)

So, choose your top 5 wheeled AFV's (icnl. scout vehicles, APC's, MICV's, JEEP's, Armored Cars, etc…) since the end of WWII to the present day.

For me:
Cougar MRAP
Stryker APC
Canadian LAV III
Polish KTO Rosomak
German-Dutch Boxer APC

In the Gawdawful-Ugly Category, special mention goes to the EBR75 of France. Now the Dutch came really close with that horrible wheeled YPR, but that AMX turret on the gaullic contraption catapaulted the EBR into true ugliness.

I have a fondness for the Rhodesian Pookie. Anyservice vehicle that uses, used Formula One race car tires mounting an armoured telephone booth on a frame with a Volkswagon Beetle engine, has to have some kind of mention.

I like the Ferret, although if I could actually own one, I would insist on painting it British Racing Green before taking it out in public.

The Cadillac-Gage family might be nice and in true American fashion of spreading democracy, most V100s and V150s seem to have been used less for military purposes and more as voting machines.

However, I really would like to paint a BTR60 or an OT64 in yellow and use it a a school bus.

Hmmm – tough call, given the evolution of weapons systems – while I loved the Saracen and Saladin, they would not last very long against a Stryker

I like the Stryker and LAV family – but also the Casspir, a solid sturdy vehicle with high crew survivability

Cold Steel05 Jun 2011 7:05 a.m. PST

The Luchs. It can run away from a fight just as fast as it gets into one.

I am familiar with these in general, but have more experience with tracked vehicles. I do like the V-100s.

John D Salt05 Jun 2011 9:24 a.m. PST

Saladin, because it was the first AFV I owned a model of (the Matchbox die-cast one -- which I hadbefore the age of two).

As a design, maybe not so great for Western Europe. The CVR(T) series that replaced Saladin and Saracen were tracked because the painful memory was still recent of Centurion regiments having to do route recce for the recce regiment in their own division, because wheeled AFVs just can't go all the places cross-country that tracked ones can.

Once we got round to the TRACER/FSCS programme, this memory was neither so recent nor so painful, so wheels were regarded as a sensible option again.

All the best,

John.

No love for the AMX-10RC?

Personal logo Inari7 Supporting Member of TMP05 Jun 2011 9:47 a.m. PST

The AML-90 very cool little vehicle with a big gun.

Jemima Fawr05 Jun 2011 10:25 a.m. PST

G-6 Rhino. Also probably the biggest.

Katzbalger05 Jun 2011 6:53 p.m. PST

What's the Czech eight-wheeled SP gun? Can't remember the name, but it used a Tatra truck chassis, if I remember correctly.

Of course, I do like the look of the V-100 and the VBL…

Ah, the Vauxhall Chevette – a fiendish addition to the Warsaw Pact arsenal (in issuing them to the RAF).

The 'technical'?

Otherwise votes for the Landrover, particularly the Pink Panther and Perentie variant link , the Ferret, Luchs, & VBL – it says French in the way that a Citroen does…..

The "Dana" ?

I almost added that one myself but didnt think the self-propelled arty should count as an "AFV" choice. Cool self-propelled arty though!

(Nameo Falso)06 Jun 2011 2:43 a.m. PST

I love the EBR-75. I have models of both the FL-10 and FL-11 turreted versions and I'm working on converting the Portuguese APC variant.

VBLs are sporty but for truly cool nothng beats the look of the BRDM-1, the Soviet batmobile.

How tempting is it to paint one of those black now…

Any of the french ones that look like they were designed originally for an episode of Thunderbirds.

Already been done Geoff! tifr.us/tifr/tag/brdm

Nice but wrong model BRDM.

GeoffQRF07 Jun 2011 3:08 a.m. PST

Yep, that is the pimped up BRDM-2. The 1 is much Batmobile-like!

Etranger07 Jun 2011 3:13 a.m. PST

They all go BRRRRRRRRRDM to me!

You simply can't beat the Rooikat for pure wheeled AFV "cool" factor.

Martin

Lion in the Stars07 Jun 2011 11:43 a.m. PST

Stryker/LAV series
OT64 looks pretty tough (and I'm still trying to get enough cash to buy one and bring it to the US)

Any of the SADF wheeled vehicles.

I'd like the MRAPs better if they weren't the weight of a freaking Bradley!

"You simply can't beat the Rooikat for pure wheeled AFV "cool" factor"

I agree. Came close to adding several French and S.A. AFV's to my top 5 but all were a bit dated and I went with newer versions in the end.

freecloud10 Jun 2011 2:39 a.m. PST

Looking at those I think were "breakthroughs" and have lasted a long time:

- AML-90
- Ratel (pretty much set the popularity for wheeled AFV now)
- Buffel (mine resistance)
- AMX 10RC (a big gun wheeled light tank)
- G-6 – wheeled 155nmm artillery.

Hmm… I see 3 are S African and 2 French – that figures.

Gennorm14 Jun 2011 5:47 a.m. PST

Ratel
Landrover (any)
Stryker
V100/150
Aston Martin DB5

John D Salt14 Jun 2011 6:43 a.m. PST

Why in the name of Dagon the Mighty Fish God of the Philistines are so many people voting for the Land Rover?

The A in AFV stands for Armoured. Land Rovers are not armoured; and if they are, they are not Land Rovers, they are Shorlands.

All the best,

John.

Gennorm14 Jun 2011 3:38 p.m. PST

Becuase the introduction mentions jeeps.

Grizzlymc14 Jun 2011 3:40 p.m. PST

Neither are Aston Martins – well, except Phat Daddy's DB5.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP15 Jun 2011 2:37 a.m. PST

Landrover "Snatches" have been very popular in many of my latest modern reads, so someone seems to like them out there!
