I've been toying with this idea for a 18th century modification for Strange Aeons for a while now. And I got around to test my modified weapon chart and rule tweaks to the core Strange Aeons rulebook this weekend. Overall I think it worked really well, I had made tweaks such as introducing D4/6/8/10 dice into the weapon chart. Combat modifiers based on character Dexterity. Tweaked the "Ready" rule to make it a bit smoother in gameplay terms, now all weapons start loaded and ready to fire but all black powder weapons require 1 action to be reloaded. The important thing is that the weapon status is carried over to the next turn, whether loaded or empty. Most of the game still use the default D6 to make checks such as rolls to hit, psychology tests etc -the overhauled weapons table (1 page) and additional and rewritten rules (1 page) are there to add a "flavor" and did indeed provide us with a distinct Strange Aeons experience where you still knew you played the core game but with stuff feeling a bit more in line with the 18th century period. You can check out more of my notes about this modification and a little battle report of a Mummy and cultists attacking North American settlers on my blog: link Pictures from the test game: picture picture picture picture I hope that my small tweaks will see this modification completed sometime next week. I still need to confer with Uncle Mike's whether or not I'll be able to publish this modification on my blog since it builds upon the Strange Aeons rules. |

Excellent original combination and promising debut: looking eagerly forward to discover more! Indeed a lot of 'Horror / Pulp' potential in 18th C. North America: link link link as well as in Europe, 'historical' link or 'alternate' link 18th C. 'Horror / Pulp' potential games / 'tales' were alluded to here for years: - TMP link (many links therein) (corresponding examples: link link ) - TMP link (links to older relevant TMP threads herein). If some 'materialized' I hope your post will prompt their organizers to 'publish' them here for our edification and enjoyment [Sven Lugar: "My Pulp campaigns run from 1702 to 1945 with great success."; richarDISNEY: "I am adding some horror flavor to my AWI/F&IW games
"; &c
] And I hope other gamers will 'take the plunge'. Cheers and thanks! |

In another approach of 'Horror / Pulpin tricornes', an idea I try to 'sell' -for free! [being myself retired from active gaming for years, and too old to start such a project myself] is to adapt Hellsing en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellsing {either the manga or the OVA, *not* the under-average TV anime} to the mid-18th C., with the (German-speaking) 'Hoellesingen Organization' based in Austria (or an "alternate" equivalent) and (Czek-speaking) 'Milenium' as a Successor Hussite Sect based in a barely controlled 'tribal zone' in a nearby part of Ottoman territory
link link link Note that an inspirational 'baroque / rococo' vision of Alucard picture is already proposed by the "Castlevania" video game link ; not sure it's 'the same' Alucard, but the design (if not the colors of his costume) is fitting
Btw even Cthulhu (!) is drafted in 'Castlevania: Symphony of the Night' link
. Hope a younger gamer will pick up the idea! |

Rewrote and tweaked my rules document and sent it to Uncle Mike's for approval before I post it. As soon as I get an reply I'll let you guys know :-) version 1.0 is 2 pages of new/rewritten rules and 1 page of new/rewritten weapons. In my opinion it is enough to give the game a new flavor without diluting the original rule and concept. When I get the time I'll add 18th century special agents and a few missions (gotta use that 6prd cannon of mine for something! |

You still use the psychology table in the core Strange Aeons rules. Roll against your resolve value whenever anything scary or repulsive is close :-) |

Update: TMP link (since the author was too modest to cross-post widely enough?) Great paintjob on the minis; the Cthulhu idol on the other hand, while faithful to the Canon, when seen from the side reminds me of Rodin's 'The Thinker' link and thus, like this famous sculpture, can be interpreted as 'meditating about constipation' (or is it 'anal retentiveness', in wargamers / TMP parlance?)! |
