I'm currently refurbishing my small Space Marines force ( link ) and when completed it will have 5 squads of 5 figures plus a Dreadnought – it's not codex-legal, but I am planning to use them with FUBAR. I'm now looking for an army to fight against them, and am turning to pre-painted figures as I am not quite up to painting one myself. It doesn't have to be a proxy for any of the armies in the 40K-verse. I am looking for something that is different from a high-tech human army, and so far have looked at Heroscape Vipers (as some sort of a Zerg force) and Marro (some sort of a Tyranid/Symbiot force). I would appreciate any suggestion you have for a suitable range, as well as ranges which are compatible with the Vipers and Marro which I can use to bulk up the force (the Vipers are pretty limited as they are now
). Thank you. |

Have you considered getting a cheap force of unpainted figs that could be painted quickly. Denizen Miniatures Ventaurans are nice armored aliens and are less than 2 bucks a piece. I'm not sure how this guy did it
link
but you could get a similar result with a spray of kryolon camo tan, pick out a few details/weapons and a brush/dip of Minwax Polyshade Tudor or wash. If you're into the aliens thing, Geiger esque aliens are a great candidate for painting with basecolor, accent color and dip. Lots of examples onlie of this method with tyranid figures. |

The Ventaurans are nice, but I really want a break from deflashing, filing, priming and all that right now
Alien-nesque aliens are nice though – do you have any suggestion for a range? The GW stuff tend to be expensive even on ebay. |

Hmm, the Cogs are interesting – I bet more searching will turn up some cheap lots. So far the Marro are high on the list, since they are have a variety of types in the army which share a consistent appearance, and are quite cheap (although some of the boss and presumably more 'collectible' types are pricier). Thanks for the suggestions so far – keep them coming! Added: Mmm

Here's just about all the "Aliens" in known existance. Only one prepainted option though, and it tends to be quite expensive. link |

How 'bout the AT-43 Karmans (see miniaturemarket.com/karmans )? Not a "horde" army, but one that would have the average trooper that is tougher and stronger than a SM (hence smaller or fewer ubits to keep costs down). Rob |

You might also check out the Therians from AT-43. And along with the Marro, I'd think about any of the "sci-fi-ish" stuff from Heroscape would work. Kevin |

I also agree about using the Marro warriors. They have a variety of troop types available. Plus you can find them cheap. I have about 100 of them. Usually 3-4 figs for 1-3 dollars a set. Thanks, John |

I use the Marro in my Weird WWII games and they really look awesome re-based and on a dedicated wargamig table. Brian |

eM-4 do a small range of very good pre-painted sci-fi figures
mostly humans, though. They'd do nicely for rebel IG, human mercs, or space pirates. Their 'Aliens' pack is made up of various individual critter types – very good, but not so useful if you want a single racial type. link |

It's silly to overlook it but mageknight has a number of options for those willing to look for the gems; link link link |

A couple of people have mentioned using the Brood (Alien-like villans from the X-Men comic books) figures from Heroclix: link |

Just to let everyone who helped an unpdate – after discussing the options with my friends (who will, after all, be the ones playing with the figures
) I decided to go for a Droids army. Specifically, I am going for Battle Droids #28 and #30, Combat Droids (#14), and the Crab Droids #39. These all come in the same colour (as far as I can tell from looking at their pics online), and so will give a coherence to the army. I hope to post some pics in the not-too-distant future. Thanks once again for your help. |
