really are some great miniatures out there:

Scibor
Enigma
Avatars of War
Kabuki
Perry Miniatures
Copplestone Castings

If that's your list then I know exactly what kind of painter you are. While I too have come to appreciate miniatures that do a lot of the work for me, that appreciation only applies when the whole miniature meets my needs. If it doesn't, then all that overdone detail is wasted.

The Perry twins are good sculptors, but quite a lot of what they've done for GW over the years is just nasty.

GW's recent Dark Eldar are quite well done, but the new Savage Orcs are a caricature on top of being orcs. "Chiselled Abs" should be a cliche, not actually descriptive.

With that Frothers reference, the new pricing, and my current home in an area that sees multiple 100+F days each summer, I will not be a Finecast customer.

"Leland, it gets damn hot by you too – imagine if you left a mini in your car? I'm at least in the Rockies. BTW, great list of other companies. I have used most every one of them and have no complaints, and certainly not of any of theirs melting!"

Yup, we hit 99 today here in sunny North Texas.evil grin

I remember what a friend of mine who worked for a municipal Animal Control agency in California once told me about just how hot it gets in a vehicle even with the windows rolled down on a summer day in Northern CA: up to 120 degrees if out in the sun for a half hour or so.

This was in the context of thoughtless people leaving their dogs in their vehicles on such days and acting all surprised when the nice Animal Control officer was reading them the riot act for putting their doggie's life in danger (dogs overheat quite easily under such circumstances), but if sample figures of these "GW Finecast" figures are going squish at 90 degrees… oh, dear.evil grin

Who listed Scibor as a decent sculptor? LMAO

Who listed Scibor as a decent sculptor?

Technical expertise does not equal artistic excellence. He's getting pretty good at the first, but is still in thrall to GW for the second.

I must be a very poor painter then Farstar…someone who needs all the help he can get…

Master Painters are those who can make anything look good, through all of the usual techniques and a well developed skill at freehand painting.

Veteran Painters will generally have the chops to tackle anything, but will lack the final spark of artistic talent or dedication to get past a good tabletop finish.

Technique Painters (or "Brand Painters") are often quite good, but lack the breadth of experience/raw talent/practice to tackle a miniature outside their comfort zone, having often specialized in one technique. Some prefer a "blank canvas" miniature, others will take a more expressive miniature and run with that, but all have a comfort zone.

Then there are the "Student" grades…

It should be obvious that many who consider themselves Masters are really Veterans or Technique painters. Your stated opinions on various brands makes you a Technique Painter. I'll paint just about anything, but I lack the artistic drive (and time) to be either a Technique Painter or Master, so my 35 years with brush and primer makes me a Veteran.

You have no idea at all what painter I am. I have heard arrogance on TMP before but this is madness. First people give their opinion on finecast without seeing it and then I get told what kind of painter I am without you ever seeing my work. I love TMP…its hilarious.

Farstar03 Jun 2011 2:54 p.m. PST

I calls 'em likes I sees 'em, and I've seen your set of brand opinions before.

fitterpete03 Jun 2011 3:32 p.m. PST

Greenryth,
How many pictures and reviews of a crap sandwich do you need to see before you call it a crap sandwich?
OK I havn't held and painted any failcast but I can still form a OPINION based on others pictures and reviews.
Even if 85% the models sold are perfect(which I doubt) the price and hype of failcast make that unacceptable.I have over 3000 Front Rank figures and I would say maybe 3 came with broken bayonets. They cost about $1.75 USD each. That is acceptable.

Etranger05 Jun 2011 11:46 p.m. PST

This is Australian prices. Bear in mind the Australian dollar is equal or slightly more valuable than the US dollar, so currency issues have no bearing on this:

40K
A single Space Marine commander is $37.00 USD USD
A single Space Marine captain Sicarius model is $25.00 USD USD
A space marines tactical squad of 10 is $62.00 USD USD ($6.20/fig)

etc

Or Mike Broadbent sculpted Eureka figures at $4.00UAUS each?

tough choice……..

billthecat06 Jun 2011 10:32 a.m. PST

If this is true, then GW are going to take a serious hit…
They will have to raise their prices to cover the loss…

I'm sure GW will carry on regardless, continuing to hype Finecast, because there seem to be enough people out there willing to overlook the casting flaws and melting issues for the premium price they're paying. Good luck to 'em but I wouldn't touch Finecast with a barge pole.

I've just been chuckling over the comments in other threads and fora about this supposedly "unique" and "new formula" resin. All GW have done is take a standard resin and add about 5% of a fairly pure acetone (about 90-95% will do it). What it does is break the resin's crystalline structure and makes it more plastic, less brittle. I may be wrong, but I think other manufacturers of resin miniatures have been using this technique for years – there's nothing new, unique or groundbreaking about it!
