Off for another Cottage holiday next week to Biddenden and on the lookout for wargamerish interesting things to look at/shop at/see and do whilst there. Any ideas chaps? Already planning to look in at a few castles and might make my way to Hastings to look at the battlefield there. Anything that can combine trips to more feminine interests would be good too- not for moi obviously. |

Don't know of any shops, but there is plenty to see in Kent. The Hastings battleground – actually at Battle just up the road – is a must see in my opinion. The other biggie is Dover Castle. Allow a whole day – it is huge and knackering! It includes the tunnels which were used in WW2
. To keep the other half happy – shopping in Canterbury. Also has plenty of historical sites. Rochester also has a quaint high street and can be combined with a visit to the Chatham dockyard. |

Bodiam Castle is only 5 miles from Battle link it's just good fortune that it's a stop for a preserved steam railway kesr.org.uk Bodiam is a "perfect" high medieval castle. |

If anyone offers you the use of their Chatham pocket just say no. Canterbury is ok and if your lucky you might hear the choir in the cathedral. |

Hever and Leeds Castles are both good. The gardens at Hever are amazing and I took loads of reference pictures that I never used. Leeds is an interesting castle, there was a flower show on when I went, so couldn't see much of it. G. |

Thanks eveyone. Any model shops that can be recommended/ Most I have seen online seem to be about RC stuff or trains. |
NigelM | 25 May 2011 3:09 a.m. PST |
Nothing stand out in my neck of the woods (Maidstone) other than Hobbycraft, Modelzone & GW there's only Modelworld which is mainly RC and train with a bit of GW and plastic kits (Airfix mainly). The Signal Box in rochester is good for scenery if you use OO or N guage compatible stuff. Not sure if Westgate Games in Canterbury is still going lost track of what was happening there. Red Knight Wargames is a fairly new venture in Ramsgate which seems to be doing Ok but not been there myself. |

Hornby Visitor Centre in Ramsgate is a must! link RAF Manston museum rafmanston.co.uk Westgate Games in Canterbury did close down sadly. link But Canterbury should be done and has plenty of quaint shop alongside brand names. Some lovely pubs for lunch. There's also a Roman Museum link Ramsgate has a model shop link And just up the road on on the clifftop is a model village. Architecturaly the Benedictine monastry and Grange up the roas are intersting. ramsgatebenedictines.com Pushing the boundaries as it''s out of Kent but as you are down South Newhaven Fort is worth a good look. newhavenfort.org.uk |

And in case your oppo declares "Your proposals are badly thought out, I see nothing in it for me to get me a return on my investment, and for those reasons alone, I'm out!" You have this right nearby

The Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial at Manston is also worth a look, it has one of each on display with many BoB artefacts. It also has a good cafe attached to it, which does good food. |

A bit of a drive from Biddenden, but if you go to Rochester castle you've gotta go and see Upnor Castle just down the road, here a link. link |

Not a wargaming or historical location, but I seem to recall a very nice pub near Biddenden called the 'Three Chimneys'. Its a rather misleading name as the pub doesn't actually have three chimneys. Allegedly the pub was given the name by some French prisoners of war from Napoleonic times. The pub is at the junction of three 'roads/tracks' and the name 'Three Chimneys' was a corruption from the French for three roads
Trois Chemins. Anyway if you get there, have a couple of pints of Shepherd Neame or Spitfire. Foods pretty good too. |

Well if you are doing Hastings have a look at Arundel. Or take your lady for afternoon tea in historic Rye. One of the Cinque Ports, and they filmed Mapp & Lucia there = classic comedy writing. link link Au reservoir for now

Chartwell – winston churchills house. Edit – you're only about 5 miles from my wargaming club to at Linton – maidstone wargames society- if you're on hols on the 11th Jun? End of plug. |

"Soldiers of Rye" Nice old fashioned toy soldier shop- worth a look at though no gaming products. A very chatty pleasant gentleman owner- a real find. |
