This has always been a bugbear for me with mounted infantry-style units from Napoleonic dragoons to ACW cavalry: do I have figures for both mounted & foot actions?

I've now got to decide with truck & APC born WW2 infantry whether I buy 2 sets of figures with one seated in the vehicle & the other on foot.

I am interested to hear what others do for any figures, in any period that may be be deployed both on horse or vehicle and on foot.

My ACW cavalry are on foot with horse holders and horses bhind them on the same base. Better represents their role as mounted infantry IMHO.

I like to have such units duplicated but have not always done so. Using Ed Smith's "War of the Roses" rules all knights and above I have duplicated foot and mounted but no horse holders, ECW dragoons I have most, but not all, such units mounted and on foot with horse holders, several fantasy units are likewise provided, lorried and similar vehicle troops do not have figures shown in the vehicles only on foot.

Whatever period I like to have characters (generals, important officers ect) mounted and on foot but sometimes the minis are not made to achieve this.

I have on occasion done both and in principle prefer to have both mounted and dismounted versions when its historically warrented ( for example, I don't see much point in having dismounted dragoons in a period where they never fought dismounted or mounted versions of mounted infantry who never fought on horseback)

If you're gaming WWII in 28mm, perhaps consider this for the riders?

He also has a German set, as well- they're both listed under "Extra Bits" on the sidebar.

As for the question itself, for noteworthy individuas, yes, I like to have both mounted and unmounted versions of the figure, for exactly the sort of situations above.

For nameless, faceless rank-and-file, however, it doesn't bother me to skip it.

yes!

I play skirmish games or smaller battles. I do have foot and mounted versions of many characters and officers.

- Characters for GW LOTR
- Ancient generals (Alexander, Roman General)
- Dark Ages Characters / Leaders
- Medieval knight characters (Joan of Arc)

For general soldiers, I have a few units but I do not represent all of them. You only need a few mounted to show where they are on the battlefield.

Zulu War British Cavalry – I have 12 very nice Empress figures for the foot versions but only 8 matching mounted figures.

WW2 – I converted Tamiya 1/48 figures so that I could sit 3 or 4 in each half track to symbolise which vehicles were loaded.

Yup. I do horseholders, too. Limbers, caisson, baggage, casualties, etc.

Crazy that way.

I do

Yes.

Our local group has long believed in using miniatures as they are painted. If you don't have the dismounts, you can't.

I do for my Pony Wars cavalry, ACW Cav and Colonial Cav.

Thanks,

John

Well…..

I would like to.

For my TYW dragoons, I am opting for a base with foot and a horseholder, per FOG Renaissance rules.

Grand Duke Natokina24 May 2011 8:22 a.m. PST

No. I don't have many mounted units, whether horse, motorcycle, or bike. My other vehicle mounted troops can be quickly grabbed from an extra pile if needed.

Ranger32224 May 2011 8:50 a.m. PST

I'll soon be starting 12 mounted Warriors of Rohan, and bought the boxed warriors on foot so that I could show them dismounted. I don't know how other rules work, but LOTR SBG allows for riders to be "thrown" and remount, so having the on-foot version seems essential.

Yes. One of the things that annoys me most about FoGR, an overall fine set of rules, is the dragoon set up. I've got lots of mounted dragoons that are now redundant and it irritates me. I've been lobbying my group to change the rules but they disagree with me.

CLDISME24 May 2011 9:46 a.m. PST

Yes, but not for all of my units. I would say 75% of my mounted have dismounted versions.

flicking wargamer24 May 2011 10:29 a.m. PST

For ACW I do. For skirmish WW2 or whatever I don't as they don't tend to remain in the vehicles for long.

John the OFM24 May 2011 11:31 a.m. PST

I have some Foundry SYW Cossacks in mounted and dismounted versions.
I also have some similar Foundry Mountain Men.
They look fantastic painted up.

I have not played with them that way, though.

I once tried to match up Dixon's Cowboy outlaws for mounted and dismounted duster dudes, but gave up. I had to settle for "close enough".

Warbeads24 May 2011 11:50 a.m. PST

Horse riding units:

Skirmish games (these are 25+ mm examples) such as 1680's New Spain, Old West, Zorro, and Gothic Horror (no Gothic currently) games – whenever possible. If not possible I fall back on some form of 3D "markers" to reflect mounted status but I don't like that as much.

Small Battles – such as Colonials – I tend not to have duplication as units generally fought one way or another. That said I have VSF Spanish Mounted and Foot Dragoons (using Ral partha British colonials Dragoons from Great Endeavours) but I doubt there will be too many other units duplicated.

Large Battles – no, since the troops are uually deployed before the battle at the start. If cost allowed I might consider it for selected units.

Vehicles (Trucks, APCs): No, I just assume hte 1/300th or 1/600th troops are in the vehicles until depolyed when I set down the troops.

Gracias,

Glenn

Yes, of course.

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP24 May 2011 1:38 p.m. PST

Yes, in most cases. All colonial, ACW, and most fantasy. My WWII figures are dismounted only (some of my vehicle do have crews). However, I did build infantry riding on 3 M-113 for my Vietnam collection.

Yes

21eRegt24 May 2011 3:57 p.m. PST

For ACW I paint dismounted along with horse-holders to complement the mounted version. I have not done so with any other era.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER24 May 2011 6:05 p.m. PST

For my Knight armies that fight dismounted, but I don't have spare horses and holders.

Whatisitgood4atwork24 May 2011 9:49 p.m. PST

Where applicable, yes. Especially where the rules require both sets of figs if you want to fight both ways, such as DBX ancients.

ochoin deach24 May 2011 11:19 p.m. PST

To sum up: essentially the response has been 'yes' (from gamers with high standards, the time & the money) or 'I'd like to' by gamers who may not have one or both of the last two attributes.

I *was* expecting at least some responses about the use of markers or other methods.

Warbeads25 May 2011 3:14 a.m. PST

ochoin deach,

I made reference to markers above.

If not possible I fall back on some form of 3D "markers" to reflect mounted status but I don't like that as much.

Glenn
