So, it's 100 years today since Mahler died, so as good a time as any to ask : Which – when push comes to shove – is your favourite Mahler symphony ? If you really had to pick just one. Is it : 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Don't dig Mahler. Not a wargamer. |

No sitting on the fence now. You must pick one – or something really bad will happen. Perhaps they will both be wiped from human memory (apart from the knowledge that they once existed and were both really good). Do you want that on your conscience ? Thought not. I heard Das Lied von der Erde many years ago. I was into pompous overdone loud back then. Heck, in that period I even bought a Ring cycle! Anyway, whatever number that one is is the only Mahler I ever listened to, so it must be my favorite. If it's a symphony, that is, and if I spelled it right. |

Sadly Das lied von der Erde is a symphonic choral song cycle, and so does not meet the criterion of this poll. Our technical experts suggest that if you like "Das lied von der Erde" then you may wish to explore and possibly vote for either Symphony 2, 3 or 8. Dudemel's latest recording of the 1st Symphony with the LA Philharmonic is spectacular. The 5th remains my favorite(Solti with the Chicago Symphony). |

I have to go with the 5th, if I must pick one. @Repiqueone: LA Phil's modern repertoire is astonishing. I was lucky enough to see Salonen conduct some Bartok some years ago, and I've never heard the like; that orchestra can turn on a dime. PS: no love for the 3rd, eh? I believe it's one of the longest symphonies there is. |
