I compiled a introduction into the world of "the Witcher", which is a series of dark fantasy novels with an eastern European setting (monsters derive from Eastern European folklore rather than being based on Tolkien'eque orcs & goblins). The main character, Geralt, is a mutated monster slayer – a "Witcher". Specialized in sword fighting, alchemy, magic and tracking and killing monsters for the right coin. The fantasy novels have resulted in two fantastic PC games as well which are also described in the text on my blog. Both the books and games aim at a mature audience and the games don't shy away from adult subjects such as foul language, nudity and violence. The world is still a "high fantasy" place, forests filled with monsters, elves and dwarfs also exist but are kept in ghettos inside the human settlements by the racist humans. Lords and barons ruling the realms of the Witcher are often a bunch of s, and Geralt sometimes reasons with the "monsters" he is tasked to kill. Every Witcher carry a steel sword for fighting regular foes, and a silver blade to fight with against supernatural opponents. But Geralt himself describes it best in one of the lines he utters when asked "Why are Witchers' carrying two swords?" "Both are meant for monsters". link picture picture picture

A friend is a great fan of the games, and we have picked up the first one to try at some point. Haven't read the novels, though – been tempted a couple of times. |

Great novels, but only two have been released in English. |

Yeah that is a shame (and weird). I could read them in Polish, but I'm a slow reader in the native tongue. I have a Russian friend who have read all novels in Russian already, lucky her! I hope they hasten the pace of translating the remainder of the novels into English with the success of both games :-) |

My son noted the use of 'Heroic Fantasy' in a world populated by fairly 'modern' folks. I agreed. I like the two that I read though
