The FM I have (referenced in another TMP thread) indicates the squad leader is also the vehicle commander. Does he dismount with the squad? If he does, there are 6 dismounts. If not, then 5. Anyone know? I woild think yes, wanted to check anyway.

Which BMP?

The fewest dismounts I can find for any version is 7, not including the crew of the vehicle, 3, which would not dismount.

BMP-1 8
BMP-2 7
BMP-3 7

Of course, in five minutes someone will post different info.

The diagram clearly shows seating for eight in the BMP-1.

Seating diagram comparison for the BMP-1 and BMP-2: picture The vehicle commander/squad leader in green is a dismount (green are dismounts, blue are crew). I think that he has to go out the top hatch, though, which is pretty frightening.

Edit: had to add this one: picture

Yeah, that looks easy.

Keep in mind that, generally speaking, the Soviets fought from within their BMPs. The BMP was designed for the soldiers to stay mounted. This was also common in Afghanistan where it wasn't unusual for the Soviets to stay in their vechicles and fight.

Yeah the Russians didn't go much for crew comfort and ergonomics(!?!)

If I remember corectly nobody over 5' 7" could drive a T-72 fine for the Ivans with they're huge manpower pool, must've been a bitch for some of their client states.

Gaz,
Those cells in the doors are only the aux tanks. The main tank is in the seat down the center of the vehicle.
And the standard in the old Soviet army was to get the squad out in 10 seconds. Took lots of practice and banged body parts!
