Does anyone know a manufacturer who makes 15mm French Colonial infantry & gun crews? I'm looking for either Foreign Legion-types or Goumier/Arab figs and can't seem to find anything. I'd prefer they be in scale with Forged in Battle/OG figs, as this is what I have for my other French. Thanks! |

I've seen Eureka Miniatures 'Australians at Bardia' (Aussies in great coats) painted as Goumiers. Worked out ok. Creative use of Peter Pig options (eg putting kepis on Eighth Army) can help expand your forces as well. |

After having to buy extra gun crew to replace the awful sculpts on the BF French 75mm Battery, I'm trying to avoid BF French items. willthepiper, any idea on scale for the Aussies @ Bardia figs? |

Peter Pig kepi heads on OG/CD/Skytrex are a good solution for "desert" FFL. I haven't picked up any of the new BF French antitank or artillery yet, as I still have plenty from the olden days, which work fine still with the investment in OG/DC antitank gun crews to bring them up to speed (the old BF Adrian helmets were just as dire, just in a different way). There are plenty of other decent 75s out there, but if the BF guns really appeal, just consider them very expensive gun packs, put the crews in the metal pot, and get some Minifigs WWI French artillery crews (which include seated figures). They go quite well with OG/CD. Allen |

IIRC, the Eureka figs were a bit skinnier than BF, but it doesn't really show unless you combine them on the same base as non-Eurekas. They're nicely sculpted (IMHO). |

Just ordered enough Bardia Aussies for an FV Platoon. They should add nicely to the Vichy/Colonial feel of my Frenchies. Will post some pics when they're done. @AECurtis: I do need some sitted figures for my QC 20mm AA Guns. Any idea where I can get the WW1 seated Minifigs in the US? |

Not since GFI/Minifigs imploded. AFAIK, Caliver in the UK is your only option. Allen |

I always thought I would want to get the first 15mm goumiers that came out
..gosh, I was wrong. These are awful looking
..but the paras are worse! The pak nests, scavanger and recce man are the only things looking worthwhile |

I'll say only this in BF's defence: Often their on-line painting is much worse than my own. I've regularly painted up their figs to look a lot better than theirs do on line. That being said, overall the OG/CD are much better, and they're so cheap you can toss a few figs you don't like here and there and they're still a fraction of BF's price. |

I would agree with HesseCassel some of the latest figures on the BF site are painted in an "odd" style which doesn't help them much at all |

Well, rec'd the Bardia Aussies from Eureka today. WOW! Perfectly scaled to my FiB figs, if a little pricey for the full platoon. Can't say I'm not excited about these guys though! Anyone know what sort of color(s) their uniforms/greatcoats were? Looked at the preview on the FoW site and I'm not sure whether the artist's interpretation is realistic

I have sveral packs of these to paint up and whilst I am not impressed with the Adrians those in battle bowlers are not bad – the omly point I'd make about using great-coated figs is that you also need to add hoods as Goums wore djellabas (traditional North African type clothing of course). Though some wore greatcoats too (but not striped of course – French or US ones I'd think) Also would the webbing be right? |
aecurtis | 04 Jul 2011 12:32 p.m. PST |
Some British webbing might have been issued, but most would have been from old US (webbing) or French (leather) stocks. Correct on the hoods for the djellabas; they also had large tuft-like fastenings (?) down the front and on the sleeves. These are re-enactors who manage to get it right:
I'm wondering if it's worth trying to get the BF Goumiers looking better by sawing off the helmet, sticking a roll of putty on for the turban, and sticking the helmet back on top:

Eureka's 300 club listing of French Expeditionary Corps will contain goumiers. Its sitting on 500+ atm so shouldn't be too far away. |
