What was your first sci-fi army? For me it was the Daemonhunters from 40K. |
alien BLOODY HELL surfer | 11 May 2011 7:27 a.m. PST |
do you mean one I started buying figures for, or one I completed. If the latter, then none, if the former then it would be orks, marines, eldar, IG and squats from the RT era stuff – but no 'army' as such. I'd say Marines (blood angels) were the first army way back then. |
Timbo W | 11 May 2011 7:28 a.m. PST |
likewise aBHs, never completed one, but bought Red Redemptionists and Imperial Marines for the old 15mm Lazerburn. |
Dropzonetoe | 11 May 2011 7:36 a.m. PST |
Space Marines and Orks 2nd ed 40k. IG was the first "full" army I painted and played with though. |
Mick A | 11 May 2011 7:38 a.m. PST |
The original plastic beaky marines with additional metal ones and lots of Rhinos as they were three to a box and dirt cheap! Mick |
The Beast Rampant | 11 May 2011 7:41 a.m. PST |
Squats. Who'd'a thunk it? But eldar got fielded a lot more initially, because they painted up a LOT faster. |
ordinarybass | 11 May 2011 7:42 a.m. PST |
Blood Angel space marines, Starting with the contents of the 2nd edition box set. Only took me about 10 years to finish a respecable force! Now I need to go back and dip and base them so they aren't just a bunch of block-painted figs with goblin green painted bases. |

Tom Reed | 11 May 2011 7:44 a.m. PST |
My first scifi army was plastic army men and spacemen which I spray painted silver, a toy PT boat I glued wings onto, and another spaceship made of legos. |

Space Marines (it was to supplement my terminators in the Space Hulk game) in the Rogue Trader era.

CmdrKiley | 11 May 2011 7:48 a.m. PST |
Given the gererality of the question, I'd have to say Battletech. No particular faction just lots of mechs and vehicles. |

The Ogre Deluxe boxed set, which I supplemented with other SJG Ogre/GEV minis. So that would be first-and-only, unless you count the Space Hulk figs. |

Back in the late seventies: In 15mm, Tabletop Games (TTG) Mercs and Asguard Space Marines in a Laserburn meets Traveller universe. In 25mm Ral Partha Mercs as 'Dorsai' – the guy on the right in the photo: picture
The bad guys were Greenwood and Ball 25mm Sci Fi, vs Heritage (?) Space Lizards and Asgard Trimotes. Cheers Mark |

Starguard! I played this back when I was 13 or 14. I built a Starguard marine force, a Dreenoi force, and a big army of Ralnai. I still love those figures. |

I think Galacta was my first as well followed shorty by a 1/285th scale army for Dirtside II. Dave |
Thomas Whitten | 11 May 2011 9:29 a.m. PST |
I got two (40k ones) at the same time – 'Nids and Marines. I picked up a used lot of Space Hulk, Deathwing, and Genestealer plus Tyranid Attack. |

like mick a plastic marines, rinos and stuff as they came out,at the end of the 80s. painted initialy in a hurry with the 3 pots of paint i had, tamiya flat yellow, citadel worm purple and tamiya gun metal. most of my opponents are to busy laughing at the coulours to realise ive been doing this for years. |
Atomic Floozy | 11 May 2011 10:24 a.m. PST |
Squats! I sometimes wish I still had them, they had a lot of character. |
Sumatran Rat Monkey | 11 May 2011 10:41 a.m. PST |
Hrm- either the original plastic beaky Space Marines that came in a box shrinkwrapped to my original copy of Rogue Trader, or a street gang comprised primarily of Grenadier Future Wars figures, some GW IG/Penal Legion/Hive Gang/Brat Gang/Mechanicus/Tech Guard figures, depending on the timeline- recollection's fuzzy on which came when, since the latter half of the 80s just sort of bleed together into a single confused mass of insomnia, THC, music, sex, fistfights, and, sadly, gaming (rpgs, miniatures, and computer games alike). - Monk |
Forager | 11 May 2011 10:45 a.m. PST |
Does BattleTech count? I've got mechs, infantry, and tanks. If not, then I'd say Starship Troopers bugs. |

Imperial Guard In fact, they are not only my first, they are about my only Army – although I have actually inherited some Tau and am going to make up some Beckie Marines |
Farstar | 11 May 2011 11:03 a.m. PST |
Army building as opposed to random miniature purchases? Probably 40k Squats. Lots of single purchase stuff prior to that, including Darrians for Striker, OGRE miniatures, and various starships. |
BlackWidowPilot | 11 May 2011 11:07 a.m. PST |
1976. A full Starguard Element (half a Strike Force). For you youngsters the Starguard are the Marine Corps of the Terran Federation. The game -the granddaddy of all sci-fi miniatures rules- derives its name from this venerable elite military force. I still have those figures, and the unit has grown into full Strike Force with all sorts of support units attached (although they were repainted to a whole new level late in my college years). GW Epic, or was it Space Marine? Whatever the game was that introduced lots of men and little tanks to the Adeptus Titanicus game.. I did have the 40k space marines when they first came out but never an army of them.

40K – Plastic Imperial Stormtroopers. Of course a new 40K edition came out a few months after i'd finished them and a platoon was no longer an army but a single troop choice
. But I did have an army finished once.. |
