What was your first sci-fi army?

For me it was the Daemonhunters from 40K.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer11 May 2011 7:27 a.m. PST

do you mean one I started buying figures for, or one I completed. If the latter, then none, if the former then it would be orks, marines, eldar, IG and squats from the RT era stuff – but no 'army' as such. I'd say Marines (blood angels) were the first army way back then.

Timbo W11 May 2011 7:28 a.m. PST

likewise aBHs, never completed one, but bought Red Redemptionists and Imperial Marines for the old 15mm Lazerburn.

Dropzonetoe Fezian11 May 2011 7:36 a.m. PST

Space Marines and Orks 2nd ed 40k.

IG was the first "full" army I painted and played with though.

Mick A11 May 2011 7:38 a.m. PST

The original plastic beaky marines with additional metal ones and lots of Rhinos as they were three to a box and dirt cheap!

The Beast Rampant11 May 2011 7:41 a.m. PST

Squats. Who'd'a thunk it?

But eldar got fielded a lot more initially, because they painted up a LOT faster.

ordinarybass11 May 2011 7:42 a.m. PST

Blood Angel space marines, Starting with the contents of the 2nd edition box set. Only took me about 10 years to finish a respecable force!

Now I need to go back and dip and base them so they aren't just a bunch of block-painted figs with goblin green painted bases.

15mm mercenary regiment back in 1983.

Tom Reed11 May 2011 7:44 a.m. PST

My first scifi army was plastic army men and spacemen which I spray painted silver, a toy PT boat I glued wings onto, and another spaceship made of legos.

richarDISNEY11 May 2011 7:45 a.m. PST

Space Marines (it was to supplement my terminators in the Space Hulk game) in the Rogue Trader era.

CmdrKiley11 May 2011 7:48 a.m. PST

Given the gererality of the question, I'd have to say Battletech. No particular faction just lots of mechs and vehicles.

chuck05 Fezian11 May 2011 7:55 a.m. PST

Space marines in Rogue Trade.

ThorLongus11 May 2011 7:57 a.m. PST

my first foray into scifi gaming was necromunda, maybe 93 or 94?,prior to that it was all historical gaming.
first painted forces were Van Saar, then orlocks, then cawdor. then of course 40k….had an huge painted imperial guard force of all retro plastic guard

MotttheHoople11 May 2011 8:03 a.m. PST

Imperial Forces for Space Marine/Titan Legions.

Jay Arnold11 May 2011 8:04 a.m. PST

Christmas 1988.

I got Rogue Trader, the Space Marine box, Ork Raiders box and a bunch of Space Pirate blisters. I still have a a bunch of the pirates.

Best. Christmas. Ever.

Twisted Metal11 May 2011 8:11 a.m. PST

Eldar from 2nd edition 40K.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP11 May 2011 8:15 a.m. PST

The Ogre Deluxe boxed set, which I supplemented with other SJG Ogre/GEV minis. So that would be first-and-only, unless you count the Space Hulk figs.

Dropship Horizon11 May 2011 8:15 a.m. PST

Back in the late seventies:

In 15mm, Tabletop Games (TTG) Mercs and Asguard Space Marines in a Laserburn meets Traveller universe.

In 25mm Ral Partha Mercs as 'Dorsai' – the guy on the right in the photo: picture

The bad guys were Greenwood and Ball 25mm Sci Fi, vs Heritage (?) Space Lizards and Asgard Trimotes.

Cheers
Mark

One word, GALACTA!

The Gray Ghost11 May 2011 8:22 a.m. PST

No wait that's three words.

Battle Works Studios11 May 2011 8:24 a.m. PST

My first army was a fleet. Valiant's Stardate 3000 stuff, both sides.

For ground stuff, Ogre minis, from Martian Metals IIRC.

Martin Rapier11 May 2011 8:30 a.m. PST

Bits of cardboard used on Squad Leader maps to play 'Imperial Commander'.

Star Wars figures.

None. I've got fleets but no figs.

Lampyridae11 May 2011 8:47 a.m. PST

Space Marines, Eldar and Orks from the Space Marine box set. Before that, it was bits of lego and home-brew rules.

whill411 May 2011 9:01 a.m. PST

Eldar

clkeagle11 May 2011 9:02 a.m. PST

Epic Blood Angels for me.

mad monkey 111 May 2011 9:04 a.m. PST

Space Marines and Imperial forces for Epic Space Marine.

Altius11 May 2011 9:16 a.m. PST

Starguard! I played this back when I was 13 or 14. I built a Starguard marine force, a Dreenoi force, and a big army of Ralnai.

I still love those figures.

DontFearDareaper Fezian11 May 2011 9:24 a.m. PST

I think Galacta was my first as well followed shorty by a 1/285th scale army for Dirtside II.

Dave

Thomas Whitten11 May 2011 9:29 a.m. PST

I got two (40k ones) at the same time – 'Nids and Marines. I picked up a used lot of Space Hulk, Deathwing, and Genestealer plus Tyranid Attack.

jpattern211 May 2011 9:33 a.m. PST

OGRE.

Apparently it was the Imperium and Terran Confederation from Imperium.

Miniatures-wise, 15mm Imperium and Zhodani for Striker.

PygmaelionAgain11 May 2011 9:58 a.m. PST

Warzone Mishima from Warzone v1.0

Samurai, heavily armored battle suit samurai, and a shadow walker that was the only survivable thing in the entire army.

Galacta 25 Imperial Stormtroopers and Shocktroopers.

nazrat11 May 2011 10:04 a.m. PST

Space Marines Illuminati Chapter (which I made up but later they had in the rosters as "official") back in Rogue Trader days.

Delta Vee11 May 2011 10:20 a.m. PST

like mick a plastic marines, rinos and stuff as they came out,at the end of the 80s.
painted initialy in a hurry with the 3 pots of paint i had, tamiya flat yellow, citadel worm purple and tamiya gun metal. most of my opponents are to busy laughing at the coulours to realise ive been doing this for years.

Atomic Floozy11 May 2011 10:24 a.m. PST

Squats! I sometimes wish I still had them, they had a lot of character.

Sumatran Rat Monkey11 May 2011 10:41 a.m. PST

Hrm- either the original plastic beaky Space Marines that came in a box shrinkwrapped to my original copy of Rogue Trader, or a street gang comprised primarily of Grenadier Future Wars figures, some GW IG/Penal Legion/Hive Gang/Brat Gang/Mechanicus/Tech Guard figures, depending on the timeline- recollection's fuzzy on which came when, since the latter half of the 80s just sort of bleed together into a single confused mass of insomnia, THC, music, sex, fistfights, and, sadly, gaming (rpgs, miniatures, and computer games alike).

Forager11 May 2011 10:45 a.m. PST

Does BattleTech count? I've got mechs, infantry, and tanks. If not, then I'd say Starship Troopers bugs.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP11 May 2011 11:01 a.m. PST

Imperial Guard

In fact, they are not only my first, they are about my only Army – although I have actually inherited some Tau and am going to make up some Beckie Marines

Farstar11 May 2011 11:03 a.m. PST

Army building as opposed to random miniature purchases? Probably 40k Squats. Lots of single purchase stuff prior to that, including Darrians for Striker, OGRE miniatures, and various starships.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian11 May 2011 11:07 a.m. PST

1976. A full Starguard Element (half a Strike Force). For you youngsters the Starguard are the Marine Corps of the Terran Federation. The game -the granddaddy of all sci-fi miniatures rules- derives its name from this venerable elite military force.evil grin

I still have those figures, and the unit has grown into full Strike Force with all sorts of support units attached (although they were repainted to a whole new level late in my college years).evil grin

GW Epic, or was it Space Marine?

Whatever the game was that introduced lots of men and little tanks to the Adeptus Titanicus game..

I did have the 40k space marines when they first came out but never an army of them.

Earthdog11 May 2011 11:38 a.m. PST

40K – Plastic Imperial Stormtroopers. Of course a new 40K edition came out a few months after i'd finished them and a platoon was no longer an army but a single troop choice…. But I did have an army finished once..

SonofThor11 May 2011 11:40 a.m. PST

House of Davion – New Avalon Guard for Battletech

Mithmee11 May 2011 12:05 p.m. PST

Eldar Harlequins because when use right were near unstopable.

Then they got the GW treatment.
