He can be historical or fictional, comical or tragic. I only cross-posted to what I thought were the most relevant boards, but he can be from any period, as long as he knows how to buckle a swash!

Inigo Montoya.

Burt Lancaster- The Crimson Pirate

Also in the Flame and the Arrow, both with Nick Cravat.

None better-even Flynn.

There is no such thing as an Okie swashbuckler. Swashbucklers from Betelgeuse IV? That I can believe in, but no Okies.

A true swashbuckling hero is a real dick, toying with his competent opponent, just because he can.

Hercule Savien Cyrano de Bergerac
Well, in the play anyway. Accounts of the real guy make him sound like a jerk.

I agree with the vote for Inigo Montoya…Flynn was the man before they invented color.

Porthos, Athos and Aramis.

From that story, I prefer the bad guys.

Rochefort: I failed. One does occasionally.
Cardinal Richelieu: If I blundered as you do, my head would fall.
Rochefort: I would say from a greater height than mine, Eminence.
Cardinal Richelieu: You would?
Rochefort: The height of vaulting ambition.
Cardinal Richelieu: You have none?
Rochefort: No.
Cardinal Richelieu: Do you fear me, Rochefort?
Rochefort: Yes, I fear you, Eminence. I also hate you.
Cardinal Richelieu: I love you, my son. Even when you fail.

Edwulf27 Apr 2011 7:04 p.m. PST

It is a cracking story. The book, and the movies.
Great characters. Never really liked D'Artanian though
Porthos being the most awsome.

I forgot about Zorro.
Robin Hood when done by Erol Flynn.

Douglas Fairbanks.

He may not have invented the word, but he brought it to the silver screen. Everyone since has only copied him, never outdone him.

If you haven't seen The Black Pirate, you haven't seen the master at work. imdb.com/title/tt0016654

Did anyone prove Erol Flynn was a Nazi? Seems I heard that somewhere.

jpattern227 Apr 2011 7:42 p.m. PST

Lots of excellent suggestions, but I have to go with Errol Flynn as Captain Blood, a movie I watch at least twice a year.

WarpSpeed27 Apr 2011 7:53 p.m. PST

The dread pirate Roberts, what a concept ,piracy as a saleable corporate entity.

D'Artagnan was an arrogant ass**, but he was good with a blade.

Historical? Not a swashbuckler per se, but I would have to nominate Miyamoto Musashi for having the right attitude (and Toshiro Mifune for being able to play him!)

Antonio Banderas isn't bad with a blade, either.

** Of course, being an arrogant ass seems to go with being a Musketeer!

Captain Blood, the Dread Pirate Roberts, and Inigo Montoya vs. the Three Musketeers. Who wins?

Repiqueone27 Apr 2011 9:44 p.m. PST

On land, no contest, The Three Musketeers!

Reason: Typical Rapier of the 17th century-40" in length. Typical pirate's cutlass 25" in length-So much for Dread Pirate.

Musketeers were team players-they had uniforms.

Captain Blood and Inigo Montoya were freelancers and definitely not team players.

The Three Musketeers also used a clever ploy-there were actually four of them-D'artagnan, Aramis, Porthos, and Athos. Pirates are notoriously bad at counting.

The Pirates haven't won a championship since 1979.

Captain Blood, the Dread Pirate Roberts, and Inigo Montoya vs. the Three Musketeers. Who wins?

Oliver Reed.

John Carter, Warlord of Mars, Greatest Swordsman of 2 Worlds, & he wore very little more than a swash & a buckle!

Huscarle27 Apr 2011 11:03 p.m. PST

I have to agree with Rallynow, "My Favourite Year" is a cracking movie. However my favourite swashbuckler was Stewart Granger who was in many a swashbuckler from the superlative duel in "Scaramouche" to the doomed Konigsmark in "Sarabande for Dead Lovers"

Westley as the Man in Black/Dread Pirate Roberts. Beats Inigo all hollow (As well as Fezzik, Vizzini and Prince Humperdink). And he is kind enough to leave Count Rugin/the six-fingered man to Inigo, instead of hogging *all* the glory.

John Carter, Warlord of Mars, Greatest Swordsman of 2 Worlds, & he wore very little more than a swash & a buckle!

Only in Farance can you have the two main characters fall in love and get married after the heroine spent the whole movie thinking the hero was her father.

Twisted Metal27 Apr 2011 11:58 p.m. PST

Got to agree with Burt Lancaster as the Crimson Pirate. Or Stewart Granger as Scaramouche.

Certainly was in Rocketman

apathostic28 Apr 2011 3:55 a.m. PST

Solomon Kane – especially in the Howard stories, although I had no problem with the movie.

Huscarle28 Apr 2011 4:34 a.m. PST

I almost forgot the arch villain, who should receive an honourable mention, Basil Rathbone, an ex-olympic fencer, who could so easily have defeated his more illustrious opponents :-).

The Person Above28 Apr 2011 5:27 a.m. PST

Flynn playing Inigo Montoya would have been my ideal.

basileus6628 Apr 2011 5:49 a.m. PST

Diego Alatriste (in the novels, not in the lame movie!)

asa106628 Apr 2011 6:53 a.m. PST

Hercule-Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac at least as portrayed by Gérard Depardieu. He carried off the role with great panache and fire. As a fencer, I have a soft spot for all swashbucklers, but the 1990 movie version of Cyrano has some really good stuff in it.

David S. (who has swashed a bit of buckle himself on occasion)

Colonel Hairy Haggis28 Apr 2011 6:55 a.m. PST

My favorite is "The Count Of Monte Cristo" staring Jim Caviezel. Wonderful story, great action, and intrigue.

as ever

Haggis

Burt Lancaster in the Crimson Pirate again. An occasioanlly jaw-dropper of a movie.

@Huscarle – I did not know that about Basil. It explains his natural looking style and grace.

Certainly was in Rocketman

You mean The Rocketeer (one of my favorite movies). The villain, played by Timothy Dalton, is loosely based on Errol Flynn and the rumors that he was a Nazi. However in truth the rumors were unfounded— Flynn was neither a Nazi nor a Nazi-sympathizer.

Daffy Doug28 Apr 2011 8:17 a.m. PST

Well, I keep rewatching The Man Who Would Be King, so I guess Cain and Connery are my favorites….

Gallowglass28 Apr 2011 8:43 a.m. PST

Captain Alatriste.

Yep. Him.

Honourable mention goes to Dr. Stephen Maturin.
